Winterbell was scared, alone, and in tears. She didn’t know how it happened, but she had somehow been left behind when her family had migrated, leaving her by herself.
“Mama! Mama come back! I’m scared! I don’t wanna be alone! Mama, where are you?!” She started openly crying when she recieved no reply. She didn’t know what to do.
Calem, taking his nightly stroll, was enjoying the silence. Well… For as long as it was silence. After maybe forty minutes he heard the cries and grew nervous. It sounded like a child, but who was to say it wasn’t?
Regardless, he drew near. He searched for the source of the crying. As he got closer he realized that it was a child, but it wasn’t human. When he finally saw the child it took all his will to not go up immediately. He took a second to transform into his dragon form before stepping up to her.
“Hello? Little one? Are you quite alright?” He asked softly, careful not to scare her.
Winterbell jumped at the sound of an unfamiliar voice behind her. She turned to face the source of the voice, shaking like a leaf. She only calmed slightly when she realized another dragon was behind her. But it wasn’t anyone she recognized.
“I can’t find my mama.” The fear was evident in her voice. She was mostly scared of being alone, but also scared to be approached by a stranger.
Calem quickly crouched slightly to make himself smaller as to make him seem less frightening to her. He looked around for any tracks as she said that, hoping he'd be able to help her.
"Do you know where your mother was going? Or when you got lost?" He kept his voice soft and gentle. The poor hatchling looked absolutely terrified.

Calem, taking his nightly stroll, was enjoying the silence. Well... For as long as it was silence. After maybe forty minutes he heard the cries and grew nervous. It sounded like a child, but who was to say it wasn't?
Regardless, he drew near. He searched for the source of the crying. As he got closer he realized that it was a child, but it wasn't human. When he finally saw the child it took all his will to not go up immediately. He took a second to transform into his dragon form before stepping up to her.

ruling-dualities:
“So… is it safe to assume that you have a human form as well as this one? So you may live among them without issue?” He was beginning to grow more and more inquisitive the longer he was with Peter. He seemed to be happy on Earth.
Calem shook his head with a small chuckle. “Forgive me if I can’t relate to your musings. I’m not exactly from… Well, I’m not as familiar with how life is here.” Beginning to relax further, he lay himself down and rested his head on the ground.
“I do indeed,” Peter confirmed with a nod. “Though I hadn’t always. Dragons of my flight don’t have that ability normally; I was granted such by a kind witch, about…” He tilted his head, clawed hand waving a bit as he tried to recall the exact amount. “I’d say two hundred years ago? It has been quite a long time.”
The elder dragon smiled lightly at Calem’s comment, his head lowering a bit. “No worries. I do admit, my experiences have become rather unique over the centuries. It doesn’t help much that I have seen the rise and fall of many things. But, you are here in a good age, I can assure you that much.”
That gave him a better idea of the elder's age, though it wasn't set in stone really. He was still eager to find out more of him.
"It certainly sounds like it. That's good to know, thank you. So far I have not seen much wrong with this world. It's still got its faults though."

She shook her head and offered a hand to help pull him back up. “Well, then maybe you shouldn’t have ‘fallen for me’ as hard as you did. Besides, you mostly made that fall happen yourself.” She did notice a certain gleaming on his ear, but wasn’t going to comment on it yet, though she swore it was…gold.
“Are you ever going to tell me why you actually disappeared for so long? Why didn’t you say anything?”
"I did, and I only have a small ounce of regret for doing so." He took her hand, pulling himself off the damp ground with her help. He shook himself off a little. Mostly he let himself dry naturally in seconds. "Well, it's a long story that involves a few hard to believe elements that don't presently come to mind, but I seem to remember a tiger being involved." Oh how the sarcasm just flowed!
ruling-dualities:
“You say, ‘making fun of’ and I say ‘making an educated guess’. I will apologize for having offended you in any way, though.” he took a sip of tea. “All to their own. I have a preference for spicy foods, personally.” He fought an urge to make jokes about her being sweet. Oh, but how good the opportunity was. Perhaps some other time.
“Considering who you are, your preference for food is far from surprising, really.” She cut at the cake with her fork, taking up her cup in her free hand. “It would be less common if you did enjoy sweets as much as I do. Beyond that; I know of some great cinnamon recipes that might get you to change your mind.” She took the forkful of cake before taking a long sip of her tea and sighing in delight. Tea and cake really could change everything in a day.
He shrugged with a laugh. "I guess that's one way to think of it. I'm just one big stereotype aren't I?" He made a humming sound as he sipped his tea. "Perhaps you'll have to prove that to me one day, no? I'd love to chow down on some cinnamon sweets."
// oof- whip it is hittin me HARD //
ruling-dualities:
“That bad, huh?” He had to chuckle at that, out of sympathy if nothing else. The feeling of lightheartedness faded and was replaced with worry.
“You don’t feel comfortable leaving your own home? Isn’t that a bit weird?” He gave a sigh. “I suppose that’d be enough to drive someone a little nuts. Perhaps I could help? I have nothing better to do.”
“I- No! No, no need. Hah.. No need for that at all. I can handle it. It just… We happen to have some new live-in guests that uhm. They just make things a tad more…lively. If we set up a date, I would love for you two to come over for dinner and all, though. I do miss spending time with you. I just….it takes…planning. With this extra family around.”
Nathaniel's eyes moved to the ground as he thought about what she was saying. 'Lively.' Heh, why did that sound familiar? "I... Well that's relieving to say the least. Family seems to be quite a complication in our lives, hm? My original statement still stands. If you ever need help I'm always free." His smile returned for a moment. "And I believe we really should plan a day where we can all get together. I'd love to meet this family of yours."
As Long as Time will Allow
Grey smoke fluttered up into the atmosphere. Ash mixing with oxygen creating practically unbreathable air. The addictive taste of nicotine on the young man’s tongue as he exhaled the intoxicating plume of smoke. He stared down at the glowing cigarette in his hand. It twisted between his gloved fingers before being flicked into the damp road beneath him. He stared out at the barren street before him. It was like a sea of black, illuminated by nothing more than flickering street lights. The night smelled of cigarettes and rain, though the sky was crystal clear. There wasn't much to look at admittedly. The moon was practically gone over the horizon, and the stars were still hiding behind the darkness, drowned out by the lights of the deeper part city just a few blocks away. Nathaniel began to walk through the city he'd grown so fond of. Occasionally a car would pass him by, releasing its own toxic exhaust into the air. He enjoyed that smell. It was familiar at that point. The air was somehow different there than it was back “home.” He scowled at the thought and continued forward. His nightly walks started growing longer and longer each night he took them. He'd walk around town, lighting up a cigarette and then taking in the sights he had memorized by heart. Perhaps he'd never go back. Perhaps he'd grow old there. Maybe he'd even be able to… He shook the thought out of his head. The only reason he had that thought was because he was passing her neighborhood. That's what he thought anyways. Denile. It seemed to be a common factor in his life. As he let his legs take him as far as they could go, he let his mind wander. No matter how many times he tried to get his thoughts back on a different track, he always ended up thinking about her. She was just so powerful. So… Strong. She had such an air of dominance. Even when she was so easy to crack she could managed to put herself back together. And she could be so sweet despite her hard exterior. Once you really opened up to her. She could be easy to talk to, and hard to lie to. You just couldn't stand lying to her. Everything had begun reminding him of her. The new coffee shop down the road. Delicately decorated pastries. A breath of cool, crisp air. The spicy scent of cinnamon. Stray cats roaming around in the street. The smell of rain. The sight of ice trailing up plants and buildings. Nothing could compare to her beauty, yet everything that was beautiful reminded him of her. He finally stopped when he realized where his legs had taken him. He looked up at her home with such longing. God… He only wished to knock. To come in. He only wished he could be with her. He could only wish for one day where he could come in without knocking. For it to just be them. Nathaniel and Raina. Together. For as long as time will allow. // Raina belongs to @ofallflavors //
// random head canon: Calem, would be a cat person and Nathaniel would prefer dogs just ever so slightly more.
Bonus: any animal that Nathaniel ever encounters would legit submit to him immediately like he's an animal whisperer //

God it was so cold… Human winters had to be the worst part of the year. It was either icy, or wet and either way it meant bad things for the fire dragon. But of course Nathaniel’s own stubbornness got in the way of better judgement and he went out in the cold rain. This typically happened after argument with his brother. He’d leave for hours, most of the time drinking, and then come back late at night without another word.
Today was slightly different.
The air was chillier than normal, and rain heavier. It was nearing midnight so it wasn’t exactly a good time to be out and about on a stroll either. At first the droplets would come off as nothing but steam on his skin, but slowly it became too much and he started to get soaked. At first he shook it off, thinking he’d just dry off once he got to the bar.
Then it started to weigh him down. After that? He started to shiver.
His knees buckled under the weight of his soaked clothing, and eventually he collapsed in a shivering pile on the side of the street. No cars, no people. Just him lying in his own self pity.
Nathaniel looked up at the stranger’s solemn expression and stifled a groan. “No, wait…” he sighed in defeat. “Yes, I need help. I’m not exactly at liberty to say why, but I need to get out of this rain. Immediately.” God this was so embarrassing.
“Fine. Fine. So. Do you live around here? I could help you get home? Or perhaps just run to mine. It’s not too far. You can dry off and wait for the rain to stop?”
"My home is... a ways... I just want to get under proper cover as quickly as possible." He didn't care where, as long as it was warm. "Sure, yes. Please."

Get ready for angst ™
So I imagine when the boys are forced to go back to their kingdoms they put up a fight. Or at least Nathaniel does. Calem would fight a while before finally giving in because he knows it’s inevitable.
I can just imagine someone close to the boys going to their apartment to find them only to find the door hanging off its hinges with claw marks all over the walls everywhere. In their room, in the halls and even at the front door of the building. Inside their apartment though there are singes from fire everywhere, still hot to the touch. Then there’s stuff ripped up all around. Pieces of cloth from their clothes and even little bits of armor that were chipped off from the guards. And since the guards had way more experience the boys where really no match. Though Nathaniel, knowing this, still goes fighting. (The guards are super roughed up by the time they get back.) The floor a mess with scales of blue and red and blacl and even bits of slowly melting ice.
It’s basically all ruined.
That, or I imagine the whole apartment being in flames. And it’s on the news that a while apartment building is in flames, everyone accounted for except for two tenants who’s apartment seemed to be where the explosion came from.
And anyone who knew Nathaniel knows exactly why the building is like that. And they know where the boys disappeared to.
I told you guys. Angst ™
