I used to work a lot in a busy island city, and in between shifts i would hang out at the park, read books, visit the waterfront, and explore. One day i was laying in the grass when i felt something puff up against me- it was a chicken! And her best friend was looking for worms next to my head. I was utterly confused until a few weeks later i learned that a house was hidden next to apartments and parks and shops, and they let their hens wander the city everyday, protected by adoring citizens.

This is very wholesome! When I still lived in Paris I once ran into some goats in the Tuileries Garden—they had recently been appointed to mow the lawns around the Louvre and replace noisy machines. This was their head of staff:

I also remember being delighted as a kid to discover that right next to the Old Books market where I went nearly every Sunday, a few beehives were hidden in the middle of Paris, in a spot that looked like someone’s backyard in Provence:

I was also fond of the bees in the Luxembourg Garden.

Even if they are well-known spots, knowing a few places where you can find ‘country animals’ in a big city will make you feel like you have a secret.

THE PLANTYFLUTESIZER

After the building of the donkey’s shelter and of the chicken coop, Hedgehog Moss Constructions presents: the chickens’ portable enclosure.

Assembling the wood frames and stapling the metal mesh onto them was the easy part, but the process was complicated by all the help I was receiving.

My foot is 1 kitten long.

These innocent kittens didn’t realise that if they stayed on the wrong side when I started screwing all the parts together, they would end up in jail.

Merricat finally heeded her children’s anguished cries but was rather unfazed when she found them imprisoned.

“Mother—” “I’m not paying your bail.”

All three kittens eventually managed to escape their prison via different means (the ginger boy realised the enclosure was still wide open on one side and quietly walked out while his sisters were scaling the walls.)

I finished putting together the roof parts (had to be persuasive as these things never line up perfectly), added an old tablecloth for shade and done! I dragged the enclosure near the garden table where I work so my hens can feel like they’re participating. I can procrastinate by watching them live their life, and Pan is also more willing to sit nearby and protect his chickens if it doesn’t mean exiling himself to the coop behind the house. And I can easily drag the enclosure in the pasture a few metres away so the chickens, llamas and donkey can enjoy each other’s company every now and then.

Addendum: there are more flies near the pasture than near the coop, and the hens have immediately discovered a new and delightful game: running round (I want to say like headless chickens but that’s insensitive) with their beaks wide open to try and catch flies in the air. It’s very entertaining for everyone.

Just finished a book by philosopher Michèle Le Dœuff in which she dissects at one point a contradiction that often raises its head when people demand social change: the issue is dismissed as simultaneously too big and consequential to allow change, and too small and inconsequential to deserve change. I’m sure modern examples can be found but the one she gives is when 1970s French feminists wanted to have the national motto Liberté, Égalité, Fraternité changed to Liberté, Égalité, Solidarité so as not to have the word “brotherhood” in there. They were told changing the national motto is impossible due to its prominence and historical weight, but also that this is a trivial concern and don’t feminists have more important fights than nitpicking over a word? Le Dœuff’s rebuttal is “Either this matter is big and significant, and therefore it’s imperative to change it to reflect more egalitarian values, or it’s small and insignificant, and therefore it costs nothing to change it to reflect more egalitarian values.”
