“I don’t know…Probably since I don’t know you all that well. And since you’re the owner of this fine establishment, I’d say it sounds like a plausible alibi. So, how are you?”
“I think most owners are a bit... absent, wouldn’t you say? We do all the hard work in the back and the employees have to run the shop from the front. I’ve got to order, do taxes, and all that jazz. But I’m doing good, I suppose. What about you?”
“Oh, really?” Holliday laughed uncertainly fingers twisting in the hem of her shirt. “That must be nice. No one gets to tell you what to do or anything and you make your own rules. Can’t see a problem there.”
“It can be nice sometimes, but also a pain. I like it on days when I realize that I can make my own rules, but hate it on every other day when I have to do everything to keep this place running.”
“Got anything colorful that comes with an umbrella?”
“‘Course, I can make anything.”
“Anything that tastes fruity and delicious. Preferably a frozen strawberry daiquiri with one of those little umbrellas.”
“Coming right no,” Lachlan said with a smile before turning to make the drink. “Here you go,” she added with a smile on her face.
“No, it’s fine. I’ll take a beer.”
“Tap or bottle?”
Mercedes head turned as she recognized her sisters voice, a smile forming on her lips “Hmm I might be willing to make an exception for family. What’s up?”
Lachlan shrugged. “Nothing, I just thought I haven’t seen you around in a while but I can leave if you want me to.”
“If you’d bothered to read the sign you’d know the shop is closed, as you can see I’m busy. Come back later.”
“You’re going to kick me out?”
“I’ll keep that in mind. I’m sorry that I’m just kind of… siting here. It’s probably bad for uh, business, right?”
“No, it’s cool. The other bartenders have it covered. I’m the owner and manager. I can do whatever I want.” Lachlan laughed.
“Hey, Lachlan. Where have you been? You’ve been MIA for like…two weeks! I’ll just have a beer for now.”
“Would you believe me if I said buying alcohol for the bar? I haven’t been MIA, Felix. Busy maybe.”
“…Are you talking to me?”
“Sure, but I don’t have to be if you don’t want anything.”
“Oh, uhm. No. I don’t drink. I’m kind of just here because some of my friends think I spend too much time at home… I’m just counting down the minutes until I’ve been here two hours so I can go.”
“Ah, I don’t drink either. So no worries. There’s always water if you get thirsty though.” The young bar owner smiled lightly and looked down at the ground.
Something like a blackcurrant soda water please, and if not that just cold water and lemon, thanks.
