Hi there, Josh here. I'm just a simple guy with a passion for running. I love to share race recaps and photos of every event that I attend. And I also enjoy feedback on questions that I post as it helps me improve myself as a person and as a runner. Thanks for stumbling on my page! Please follow me if you'd like!
I haven't posted anything on Tumblr in months! I should post more pictures of Queenstown and New Zealand. I'll try my best to stay connected. But for now, I'm back in Las Vegas for my dad's 70th birthday. I figured while I'm here why not run a 25K desert trail run? Lol. I'm committed. Tomorrow I'll try to kill it! I just hope I stay hydrated to finish!
Hi fellow tumblrs! I just realized that I haven't posted anything since last December. Yikes! Training has really taken a backseat to everything at the moment. Before I decided to move to New Zealand, I told myself that I'd stay motivated and continue to run several times a week. I was disciplined for the first two months, then everything just kind of slowed down. I went from 4 runs per week to two... then to one... then to none.
Ironically, I've lost 15lbs so far... with less running!
Must be stress related (I really miss home).
Anyhow, I've joined the local gym in town and I'm determined to get my ass back to running. I've signed up for the Auckland Marathon in November... and I'm setting a goal of 4:30:00. I've been training now for the past 2 weeks and will continue to train several times a week.
I'm still waiting for my information packet... as I decided to run for charity this time around. I'll hopefully be running for Asthma Auckland, a great charity that helps people and their families with asthma. I suffer from asthma myself and understand how difficult it is to have such a condition and to continue running long distances.
It's great to be back on tumblr... I hope everyone is having a great weekend! Kia Ora fron New Zealand!
It's already NYE here in New Zealand. So before the clock strikes midnight, I wanted to write my final running blog of 2012.
As I sit here reflecting on my running year, I have one race that comes to mind... the "Summerlin Half Marathon". This was the race that started it all. Because of illness last year, I was unable to run in the 2011 Las Vegas Half Marathon... and after wasting a good $180 on the registration I didn't think I'd attempt a race... ever! All that changed when my buddy convinced me to sign up for Summerlin (a master plan community in western Las Vegas). From this single race, the bug was planted and I didn't want my running to end.
Based on my Nike+ records, I have completed the following:
After noticing that I've completed 99 runs, I've been sitting here debating if I should go for a quick 5k to finish off my 2012 with 100 runs!
On the other hand, I could keep my runs at 99 and make my NY's resolution be 100+ runs for 2013. Ah, what to do... what to do.
Well, if I do run my 100th run... I'll be sure to post it!
With my recent move to New Zealand, I won't be able to participate in many organized races as there aren't many near Queenstown. And I also noticed that they don't award medals unless it's a marathon, and there usually isn't a shirt to commemorate the race! Seriously, no shirts??
Oh well, I'll definitely remember 2012 as my year in running. Below is a snapshot of my medals and I am proud of each one.
(From left to right: Summerlin Half Marathon, OC Wahoo's 5K, Kaiser Permanente Half Marathon, Amica Lake Las Vegas Half Marathon, Running with the Devil Half Marathon, 4th of July 5k Blast, San Francisco Marathon, ET Midnight Half Marathon, Awesome 80's 10K, Team Challenge Sunset 10K, Long Beach Half Marathon, Rock'n'Roll Los Angeles Halloween Half Marathon, Rock'n'Roll San Antonio Marathon and last, Rock'n'Roll Las Vegas Marathon. )
I won't earn as many medals in 2013, but my goals for 2013 are to complete marathons in New Zealand and Australia. I should start training on January 1st if I want to PR!
Hope you all have a Happy New Year!! And never quit running, never!
Hi! The move went well. Now I'm trying to acclimate to the New Zealand way of life. They drive on the left side and they all have accents! Lol, I guess I'm the one with the accent now that I'm in their country! Hmm, what else... I'm still jobless =( But on the plus side, I've already found several running trails along the lake! It's so beautiful here! Also, I have a job interview next Tuesday, so wish me luck!!! =)
Where do I begin? As my final run of 2012, I couldn't have picked a better race. I postponed my departure to New Zealand to run this one. I couldn't, absolutely couldn't skip it. The week leading up to race weekend was pretty hectic. In this short week I had my final day at work, I had 4 days to organize all my things for my move to New Zealand, I spent most of my free time with my family and friends... all while preparing for 26.2 miles.
Sounds stressful doesn't it! My balancing act came at a price... and a few days prior to the expo I started to feel ill. I had difficulty breathing and had to use my nephew's nebulizer to pump some albuterol into my lungs to help me breath easier. It helped a little, but I didn't feel like doing anything in fear of me having to DNF out of the race. I had to cancel two dinners with my friends and lunch with my cousins... I decided to stay home to relax and prayed that I'd get better.
The morning of the expo I started to feel much better. I jumped out of bed fully charged and ready to enjoy the expo.
Expo highlights:
Got there early to avoid the huge crowds, but there was a still a line to get in 30 minutes prior to the expo opening
Got my bib number super quick! And changed my corral from 8 to 4!
The tech tee looks awesome!
Got a huge lot of free stuff! Three running shirts (besides the official shirt), free jelly beans and Marathon bars!
Picked up some cool Wigwam Ironman socks! Woohoo!
Purchased the 26.2 Finisher's tech tee two days prior to the race to keep me motivated to finish
Took tons of pics with my buds
Purchased a new massage ball to replace my foam-roller
I've waited too long to write this so I'll bullet my run highlights from start to finish... if I can remember them all!
We were allowed to check-in to our room at the Mirage early to drop off of our things... I didn't have to use the bag check for this race! Awesome!
My friends John and Rainier came out to the marathon start to see me off (the marathon started an hour and a half before the half marathon)
We took tons of pictures!
I was super nervous at the start of the race because of my illness the previous week, I was extremely worried that I wouldn't finish the race
Running pass the "Welcome to Las Vegas Sign"
Running on the Las Vegas strip in the middle of the day, with the thousands of spectators cheering us on
Hitting the 13 mile marker prior to the cutoff time! (this was my first challenge, as this race required you to hit the 13 mile mark by 2:30)
My entire family was there waiting for me and cheered me on as I passed the 16 mile mark! I had texted my sister when I was about 2 miles away to let them know I was already running towards them. I got emotional before finally reaching them. I couldn't cry though, cause my legs were already hurting after 16 miles! After hugging and kissing all of them, we took a few photos and I was on my way. Seeing my mom and dad gave me an extra burst of energy... at this point I knew I had the fuel to run the remaining 10 miles.
(My sister had made these signs for me)
(My sister took a quick pic as I had a banana and some water)
At mile 20 I started cramping, again! But the cramps this time weren't as bad and I was able to run through it
The course led us under the Fremont Street Experience! The bright lights and running between the casinos in downtown made this a memorable run!
Miles 22-24 were a blur... we were running through dark parts of downtown and I really just wanted to finish the run!
The final 2.6 miles were awesome! As we neared the finish line, we could see the crowds of spectators! This definitely helped with mustering up the energy to complete the run.
After receiving my marathon medal I got a kiss from the lady that medal-ed me! Haha, my friend got this on camera!
Oh and I finished my marathon in 5:05:42... not a PR, but I ran it faster than San Antonio! That's all that matters!
I'm so happy that I had the opportunity to run this last race for 2012. There were so many memorable moments that I know I'll cherish forever! My big move to New Zealand will definitely make it difficult for me to gather up more running medals... but now I can focus on training harder to hopefully PR for my next race (yet to be determined). Maybe I'll run the Gold Coast Australia Marathon! Or maybe the Auckland Marathon! Who knows!
I hope everyone had an awesome year of running just as I had. 2012 was a good start for my new passion.
After three marathons, seven half marathons, two 10ks and five 5ks... I can call it quits for the winter. =)
I hope 2013 will be just as fun!
My big move to New Zealand - but first RnR Las Vegas
I have yet to write my race recap for this past weekend's RnR Strip at Night. This race was filled with so many magical moments that I can't even describe it at the moment. I'll be sure to write about it soon.
At the moment, I'm sitting here at LAX... waiting for my 10pm flight to Auckland, New Zealand. I can't wait to embark on this new adventure...
Zappos Rock'n'Roll Marathon here I come! I love going to expos - and this one tops the list! All the great booths and tons of free stuff! I can't wait to finally run a full in my home state! Well, second home state... I still need to run a full in Hawaii to check that one off my list! Anyone else in Sin City for the race? Bundle up cause the winds are blowing!
My second double digit mile run in 5 days. I was hoping for a 16-18 mile run today, but ran out of gas. Need to keep my legs fresh for next weekend. Time to taper!
First long run since my San Antonio Marathon. My Color Me Rad 5K and Sunday run were just warm ups for tonight. My legs felt pretty good and could have easily gone for another 4 or 5 miles but my stomach was growling pretty bad. Had to cut it short to grab some dinner.
