I'll protect you from the hooded claw
Keep the vampires from your door
I'm so in love with you
Purge the soul
Make love your goal
Part One
Rain was pouring like it had never learned how to stop, noisy waterfalls were coming down the roof of the porch you were sitting under, arms tight around your chest as the hoodie you were wearing was doing nothing to keep you warm. You gulped as you felt subtle movements behind you, silent as their heartbeats yet loud enough to be heard above the sound of the tempest. You sighed at this point and tightened the grip of your fingers on your ribcage, leaving marks and scratches from the rage that was building inside and which you couldn't let go of.
“You will hurt yourself.” Carlisle's voice was calm, too calm, as he tried to be an enjoyable presence.
“I don't care” you muttered under your breath and you heard the soft laugh of Emmett echoing in the right corner “and it's too late, anyway”.
You were doing your best not to burst out screaming, you felt your cheeks turning red from the heat you had inside and you feared the blood coloring your skin might cause them some troubles. One of them deserved it, after all, even if it could only make him angrier. You closed your eyes and inhaled as deep as you could, his cologne filling your lungs totally against your will and your expression broke into a smirk of pain. You felt Esme's hand touching your back in a soothing way but you tensed at the touch and she thought it was better not to do it. You asked her pardon with a quick glance and she softly smiled back as she could perfectly understand the tantrum you were going through, just like a mother would, just like a human would.
From the corner of your left eye you could see Edward intently looking at you, Bella's hands circling his shoulders while also paying attention to your movements which were non existent and that got them all a bit worried. You exhaled silently, anger still boiling under the pale surface of your shaking body like a sleeping volcano ready to finally erupt.
“Would you mind drinking something warm? I have the feeling you're freezing” Edward spoke those words really cautiously but you could feel the anxiety in his voice which made you decide to accept his offer. You nodded quietly and he smiled, happy to have read your mind correctly but also to have caught your attention which seemed too distant and he didn't like that. Your thoughts were blurred, he could only spot fragments of past conversations filled with tumultuous feelings, they were confused and painful and he started to feel uncomfortable. As you stood up everyone followed as if they were only waiting for you to show them that you were still alive, barely noticing that you had a pulse keeping you functioning properly. He was the last one joining the group at the kitchen aisle, you already boiling the water and choosing your favourite tea as if the house was yours and you were just hosting a party with your chosen group of friends.
He was near now and was whispering something unreadable into Em’s ears like you didn't even exist and that made you explode. Your hands started shaking wildly as you were trying to fill your cup which fell to the ground and turned into billion pieces just like your shattered heart. Rose promptly took the teapot and Bella dragged you as far as she could from any warm object, not really knowing what to do but understanding damn well that something needed to be done.
“See? It's just a matter of seconds. She could cut and bleed and then..”
“And then what?” you spat it out right in front of his face. He looked at you, surprised by your tone.
“Then someone could get hurt.”
“As if I wasn't hurt already.” he stood there, a bit wide-eyed as he tried to process the thing. His eyes were dark, not for hunger, but for something which you could not totally read. Rage, maybe, or a new kind of fear.
“What are you talking about?”
“I'm talking about you and the way you've been treating me these past weeks. I'm even surprised you allowed your sisters to bring me here today.”
“You're.. confused.” tears started to form in your eyes and you know you couldn't control them much longer.
“I am not confused. You think you can tell me anything you want and mask it with the excuse that you might be potentially lethal for me but, guess what? Words can hurt as much.”
“I'm just trying to find the right way to..’
“No, you're just trying to make something up in order to get rid of my presence but I can do that myself. Just, please, at least be honest. I cannot stand you avoiding my presence like I’ve never existed in your life. You can just tell me.” his eyes became even darker as you kept talking and his hands started to shake. You weren't scared at all, just worried that he would cut the conversation without letting you setting a couple more points straight. Edward and Emmett desperately wanted to let you have this conversation alone but they were not sure he could control himself enough to not cause any damage to the house.
“Do you think I keep distance between you and me because I don't care?” his voice was really low yet really dark and raspy. He looked very much like a vampire in that moment but you couldn't care less.
“Jasper, it's obvious. You always bring up excuses not to have me around or, worse, to make me go away. But you started it all. You started the talking, the conversations about literally everything, the countless evenings spent at my window.. I don't know why you did that if it's now so unbearable. You could have just avoided me as any other person on this planet has been doing for the past twenty years. I'm used to be alone and it's not a problem but it is if you fuck with my mind and then leave me into pieces.”
“It's not because I do not enjoy your presence but because it's dangerous.”
“What is fucking dangerous, Jasper? Do you think we live in a perfect world where men are all love-and-affection to their partners? Where cheaters and murderers do not exist? Do you think we live in a world where love, and I mean the kind of love you think I should be looking for, doesn't kill? You really need to open your eyes!” you were yelling at this point of the conversation and the rage building inside your chest made you think that you could actually fight him. Like with real punches and kicks, yeah, sure.
“I-I’m not saying it's all good out there but I have to control myself and not in a positive way. Everytime. How can you not understand that? Even now I have to control my senses, my instinct, my thoughts, my..”
“Feelings.” Carlisle said it really quietly but even you could hear it well. Jasper quickly shook his head as if he didn't want that part to come into play. His expression turned into a smirk of pain, just for a brief moment, before returning to a more threatening one.
“I cannot let my guard down, ever. You don't really understand how fragile this.. situation is.”
“But I also am, Jasper, and it's you who don't get that. My humanity makes me an easy prey for the worst things in this world: diseases, accidents, natural disasters, wars, and.. humans.” he got really still while you were talking, paying attention not to look you in the eyes. He knew that was his breaking point and he wasn't ready to let you win, not yet.
“I was human and I know how thin the line is. But..”
“But you forgot it all. You forgot that you had a heart and that it's still there, silent maybe, but it kept you alive when it needed to and it should now be your reminder that some things just never die.”
You could feel the eyes of everyone in the room go right into your soul as they tried to keep up with such an intense exchange of emotions that were becoming overwhelming.
“It’s.. hard.” his voice cracked a bit as he took a step back, fists now in his pocket trying to control the urge to break the whole house apart.
“Yeah, I know damn well that it is. You always talk about yourself like you were a feral monster that can't be near a human for more than five minutes without wanting to kill them but you have to stop this stupid shit. You stood by my side for months, heard me studying, rambling, crying and shouting and you never made me feel like I was in danger. I-I perfectly get that you don't have feelings for me, like in a romantic way, but that was friendship and you are throwing it away.”
“I think it has never been a good idea, after all.” he was muttering these words under his breath, panting almost as he really tried not to burst.
“Yeah, that's why I know that my presence will no longer be needed.” and there they were: tears. Actually a lot of them, you couldn't even control the sighs that were escaping your mouth because you knew that this would have been the last time. The last shared moment, the last breath of his scent, the last look at those eyes. You knew it when you almost fell to the ground, stumbling on the way to your car, and the hands who caught you were not his.
