Writing process

I always have difficulty writing papers and this time it was no different. I think it's a combination of having everything that I want to write jumbled in my head and summoning up enough of an attention span to just sit and get it it all out. I always feel rushed when I'm writing because I want to get it all out before I forget anything. Then there is the gathering of information which when I am doing always has tendency to lead me off track.

Having my peers review my paper helped me a whole lot. After writing something I always go back and question whether what I just wrote sounds legit like a pile of horse shit hitting a fan. Having an umbiased criticizing eye look at it and telling me specifics gave me my weak points and helped me really concentrate on what I had to work on.

Sources were hard to find. Most of my sources came from "ancient" books. I'm not sure if it's the way I searched in the databases (I definitely have used them before and I'm pretty confident I know how to use them) or the databases I searched but I could not find anything there which was frustrating. So all in all first attempt at what I consider a long essay, not quite a success but I will definitely be more prepared for the next one because of this experience.

I will be very interested to hear more on this topic. I would want to know if it's just America that does this or if other countries do this too. I would also want to know if there are any pros to this treatment of our foodstuffs or if there is only the cons.

Journal Assignment 4

My initial plan was to write about the negative side of genetic engineering, and the threat it arguably poses to the humankind. However a quick research on the topic revealed it to be too complicated and contradictory for this assignment. I felt that the amount of necessary research, complexity of evaluative criteria, and the lack of solid evidence were too challenging for a ten page paper, and would probably be a more realistic task for a doctoral dissertation.

That is why I picked another thesis from the selected five, and decided to make my point that hunting is beneficial to society, and its opponents simply refuse to view it from the positive angle. I am talking about the regulated sport and commercial hunting, of course, not about illegal hunting which is responsible for distinction of numerous species. Despite the abysmal difference between the two, hunting has a strong opposition in the world, and even faces more or less realistic threat to be banned. In my paper I will try prove the absurdity of such controversies, and build an argument in its defense.

Your essay sounds like it will be well constructed and is on an interesting and controversial subject. I look forward to reading it. I already know I will take your side, humans have thrown off the balance and hunting is in my opinion the least wasteful way to fix that balance minus reintroducing native predators to the area. But I also want to hear more from the other side, why people are against it and the evidence they have as well

First off the way you found out if you could write enough about your topic was very smart. I might have to go back through and do this with all of my topics. I also think that you chose a good topic that people can take different stances on. Like yes one could say it’s more convenient in some ways and good for the environment in some ways but electronics can also be glitchy, I feel their information isn’t as lasting or permanent as a book, and some computer parts are bad for the environment if not disposed of properly.

Journal 4

Preservation of endangered mega fauna is crucial to the future of this planet. Their migration habits and consumption of various plants help shape and maintain the wild landscapes around us. 

The points I would make would be about wildfires cause by lack of mega fauna, paths migration habits create, the balance of predators and prey, reasons for extinctions, and past history of extinctions and the consequences that followed.

I think that i should start with talking about which animals are endangered and perhaps the roles they play in their environments. I think it would go in this order: which animals are endangered and the roles they play, the paths animals create when they migrate and what those paths mean, the balance of predators and prey, wildfires caused by lack of mega fauna, and past history of extinction; why the animals went extinct, the consequences, and what that means for our future. I am quite happy with the order of these points and I don't think i would put them in any other order. These points have much potential and I think i can write a lot under each one. I would provide cited evidence and cited theories of experts in this field, perhaps along with graphs and diagrams to provide statistical evidence. Although i say I think I could write enough on each point I also think I should come up with a few more before I start writing this paper.

This is a topic I feel strongly about and that I am incredibly interested in. This process has not changed my mind about writing on this topic. I might try to list other points on my other topics just to see if they would be easier to write about. I might also consider writing in a different style because the way I'm thinking about it now it sounds like this might turn out to be a research paper and that's a lot of work.

Journal 3

In July 2001 Chief Justice Roy S. Moore of the Alabama Supreme Court and a group of his supporters erected a monument of the Ten Commandments. There was an outcry of injustice that followed this action. People proclaimed it was unconstitutional and it was endorsing one religion.

When I read about this incident the thing that struck me was the fact that he did it in such a secretive manner. He did it in the evening when employees were gone and he didn’t even ask his colleagues’ permission. If he didn’t think he was doing something wrong than why did he do it this way? Why so sly? I mean maybe I’m wrong but that’s how I read it.  Maybe it’s because he knew if he asked the answer he would get would be a no. As the saying goes it’s better to ask forgiveness than permission.

Perhaps if the Justice had compromised and included in the monument things from other religions, maybe from the religions of those other law givers; Muhammad, Hammurabi, Moses, and Confucius, than there wouldn’t have been such an opposition. He could have asked permission without the fear of being turned down.

One could also argue that the Ten Commandments belong to more than one religion. Morals that have been passed down from pre jesus religions. Historically speaking they say our modern Bible is descended from many ancient texts. Just looking at them plain sight one knows the jewish people also use the Ten Commandments, although with only slight variations. To me religion is all relative with the same conclusion; be good, do good, and you will get good.

Words and stuff

I really think my writing has more than two weak points but if I had to choose two it would be the fact that I usually don’t go into enough detail and sentence fragment. Like I don’t even think I really remember what a sentence fragment is specifically. I also think that I have a problem with the structure of my writing and going from one thing to another more smoothly. Unfortunately I don’t have my textbooks yet because today was payday so I can’t look up these issues and find solutions.

Hello my name is Courtney Maffett and I like to keep sandwiches in my pocket. I work at a cat clinic as a veterinary assistant so don’t be alarmed if I come to class looking like I got mauled. I really like cats and all animals so the occasional scratch is a small price to pay for having such an awesome job. I used to work at Pizza Hut and that job was the worst. DON’T EAT PIZZA HUT. One time my manager made us use expired sausage… she was a twat.

I wouldn’t say I’m an awesome writer but I do believe my writing skills surpass my math skills so that’s why I chose a liberal arts degree. I hope that this class may improve my writing and make it flow better, along with improving my grammar.

I’m Anthropology major and right now my plans for my education consist of finishing an associates degree at NOVA. I haven’t really thought of where I want to go after I finish because that seems so far away right now, plus I’m lazy. I will go with the flow and when that flow is slow I will pick it up and kick it up.

I would tell you what I'm good at but I don't like bragging.
