“at the start of summer, i planted some basil and shiso in a planter on our veranda. they grew really fast but then a typhoon came in july and the shiso plant got bent in by the wind. when my mother saw it she said ‘that won’t stand up straight anymore, so break it off at the crease. if you do that new leaves will grow in no time.’ but i just couldn’t bring myself to do that. the little leaves at the tip of the bent part were still really healthy. they were fine no different from before the stalk was bent.

a few days later i went out to the veranda and found the damaged shiso plant wilting on the soil, dying a slow miserable death. my mother was right. i had to break it off where it had gotten bent over. the only thing to do was give it a fresh start, let it grow from there and sprout new leaves. still though…i can’t help hesitating. i just can’t help it.”
