HAPPY WORLD PHOTOGRAPHY DAY!! What a day for celebration! Totally not just for “photographers” but for the craft across the board. In all my years of professional photography I can’t recall anyone who ‘hates’ photography and only a very small few who think it’s ‘just ok’. It seems to be a hobby/craft/passion/job that captures imaginations with its unlimited potential and creative outlet. It doesn’t matter the tools you use or the final output; The creation is what matters. Use your smart phone if that’s what you’ve got. Post to Instagram if that’s what makes you happy. Rock a Hasselblad and create city-block sized commercial advertising if you’re in that end of the trade! Let’s all celebrate this magical expression of visualization together! This is one of my favorite travel shots, captured in Lake Wanaka, NZ. It was actually quite a tricky setup to nail and required a little post production to taste. The light on our faces was the torch on my iPhone that could only expose for a fraction of a second because of the high ISO needed for the Milky Way! After numerous attempts in the bitter cold and some post magicification we have this result. Not much was done to enhance the magnificence of the sky...NZ is a phenomenal place to shoot the stars. A little punch in the highlights and some contrast. As much as I love this image and the memory it represents, the process of its creation is why I love photography so much. I knew what I wanted and I worked until it made manifest. I’ve had a difficult time with accepting it as my passion over the last few years due to some health stuff (that I guess I’ll cover at some point soon... ), but it’s moments like these that make me realize that I’m not done here... Today I arrived back home. . Not home as in where I grew up, or where I lived when I was at Uni. In fact not any other home I’ve experienced as the human named Russ Benning. . This home is different. It’s not a memory as much as a feeling. . I spent the last 2 weeks beachside in Canggu. I had a fantastic time! Met more cool people, had all sorts of fun, got in the surf and created fresh art. But it’s not the same… . I noticed the way I felt even as I was riding my metal stallion progressively deeper into the metaphoric heart of Bali. I became more at ease. New ideas crept into my awareness and some older ones seemed suddenly more possible. . My general confidence rose and I had a subtle feeling of empowerment begin to burn deep inside. I smiled. This feels like home. . I stood up taller within myself both physically and figuratively. I felt a familiar energy of connection to the area and more importantly to self. . What struck me as the most comforting of all was somewhat intangible in nature, but the most important by far. It wasn’t that I felt more creative, or confident or more peaceful. Although all those things are true, the most significant was that I felt more ME! I feel like this place brings out the most authentic version of myself. . I don’t know how long it will feel like this and I don’t care. It feels right, right now. Bali is quite the place... . I came here with the intention to find my intention. Find new, or reinvigorate existing, passions. Step up my business life. Do some healing and practice more self-love/acceptance. Maybe even find #love. . I’m more than a bit excited to say that after just a touch more than two weeks I’m feeling a significant shift. . I’m falling back in love with photography in ways I never could have predicted. Symbiotically tying into business ideas/opportunities finally free to unfurl their beautiful possibility, due to no longer being held too tight in the grip of a grind mindset. . I took a creative writing workshop that I loooved and sparked a little (not little) fire within me. Writing was always my number one passion, even before photography. Hard to say what exactly surprised it and kept it from being my true expression. It really doesn’t matter now because it’s back. I’m so excited to explore it further and share my voice with my favorite race, on my favorite planet. 🌏 . Too much to share so I’ll keep it here for one post. Needless to say, much more coming soon! It’s very common to put our best foot forward on here and I see now real problem with that. As long as the viewer recognizes that this is the case. This isn’t the full story. This isn’t the place for me to explore my shadow and shitty moments (the blog will have plenty of hilarity-via-bugger-ups!). . My growth has come, as it always does, through challenge, change and perseverance. Not from doing what I’ve always done and wondering why I’m who I’ve always been. . 🏆 This trophy is for all of you that are reading this right now. I’m blessed to have a following of legends that support me and give me feedback when I need it. . I’ve got so much going on right now and it’s kinda awesome! Moving to a city was always on the bucket list and I had some apprehensions and I suppose in honesty some expectations. It’s been well and truly a whole new world for me and absolutely not what I was expecting! . Hard to know where exactly to start or finish this thought process even though I know I keep teasing towards a piece on it! Good news is I’m about to launch my new website that will include my blog and be the outlet to express myself without character limits or social expectations. The deal will be that if you show up, you’re ready to hear my authentic voice and I can’t f*#king wait! . It will also house my new online store! I’ve got a bunch of stuff I want to share with the world and if I can make a couple of bucks to continue my true expression and give back; I’m doing that! . I’ll also be offering photography mentoring to help people get off Auto and/or level up their own creative expression with a camera. . The website will also be much much more than just Russ the photographer (which is such a limited part of who I am it’s why I’m branching out from my photography brand). As I reflect on the change of direction and intensity my life has taken in the last 18 months, the lessons I’ve learned and the work I’ve done, I realise that it’s absolutely not without significance. And from channeling my authenticity in my interactions. it has become very apparent that I have a gift to help and empower others in this lifetime. This isn’t something I’m taking lightly and I cant wait to share more as it evolves. . Having said that I’m so happy and grateful to be shooting again and in my city of birth! HAPPY NEW YEAR legends!! . Wishing you all the very best on this crazy night! Stay safe and have a cracker! . 2018 has been a rollercoaster. We’re talking build ups, complete with resistance and uncertainty, followed by the “WEEE”, part, full of flow, certainty and progress. This is life folks, and don’t forget, rollercoasters are meant to be fun! . Awareness has been key here. I’m so grateful to have been surrounded by so many incredible people and in this bracket of awesome I’m including myself. This is a tricky concept for most, and I was no exception in the beginning. . Can we agree that being truly ourselves, married in with self love and respect, in an effort to bring to this planet our most authentic self to uplift the rest of it’s beings is important? I think YES. Wholeheartedly. . Doesn’t mean I always thought that or that I’m completely perfect on this journey. Far from it. But that’s really the point here! . Celebrate the wins, forgive and show compassion for the losses. Create a reality that’s projected through a lens of love and happiness and continue to grow. Strip away the layers of the old you and embrace the truest/greatest version of yourself. . Learn to say goodbye to the limiting beliefs that were never yours to begin with. 2018 : “The year of the rollercoaster” . Anyone else agree?? . For me it’s been one hell of a journey! I’ve travelled, I’ve created, I’ve met amazing humans, I’ve consolidated existing beautiful relationships, I’ve healed, I’ve struggled, I’ve succeeded and so on and so forth etc etc! . I’ve had some massive wins and some massive “learnings”! Don’t forget you never lose; you either win or learn! . Shifting my lens has been the biggest takeaway from this year. It’s, of course, much easier when things are going great, but when you’re knee deep in a shocker of time, and you still recognize the positives and tend towards gratitude and love, you know you’ve been doing the work 🙏 . In 2019 I’ll be relaxing on my pursuit of perfection (mainly because it doesn’t exist, bar from a no-health-lost round of street fighter) and aim with laser focus towards my authentic self. My apologies for my recent absence my legends! It’s been crazy times at my end. So much has been going on it’s not possible to cover in one post. This is where the blog will be a life saver for me and a much deeper dive into my work, thoughts, feelings, words and stuff. Thank you all for being so patient and for letting me know you can’t wait to read more. I’ve been living a million miles an hour lately and it’s been choc-a-block full of highs, lows, reality altering connections and soul discovering challenges. It’s become clearer, now more than ever, that all the work and my incredibly empowering inner circle of legends has become an unquestionably high quality addition to my life. Too much to cover so I’m gonna stay vague right now saarrryyy! Biggest takeaway being that mindset and awareness are totally the keys to controlling your reality. One morning could be hell and a slight (or monumental) shift in perspective can transform your reality to a heaven state. The details remain the same... I’m working on an eloquent and easy to understand way of expressing this and my journaling is drawing me ever closer to the result. Can’t wait to share with you all and myself as well! . . Hey friendos!! Thanks for all of your kind comment and beautiful feedback lately 😇 I’ve taken a lil breather from the social postage due to some personal commitments and some family times. That’s not to say I haven’t been creating, cos I have some absolute photography bangers coming up! Also wordy-content wise I’ve been hell deep (like that one Perth ppl? 😜) in contemplations and there’s been no shortage of opportunities/challenges lately. In fact it’s like both have been amplified. To make a quick photography analogy, the brighter the light, the harsher the shadow. Same same for life my lovelies. Don’t be disheartened if you make a beautiful breakthrough and get rewarded with a hydra-esque presentation of new challenges. Embrace it, welcome to life! That whole train of thought is a full post for another time however... Right now I’d love to touch on the topic of creative process (also a full blog in the making, stay tuned for new website and fatter content!). I’ve had a lot of situations recently, and from my legend circle echos of such sentiments around the capturing and implementation of creative thoughts. I had an episode on a flight where I broke from meditation, invigorated with groundbreaking content, only to lose it to the ether of distraction and lack of patience. The time between inspiration and recordation was all it took to lose the train of thought and subsequent creative insight. So now what? Well, enter: voice memos! This isn’t news for any writers familiar with a dictaphone, and in the modern age it’s easier than ever. In flow? Just say the things! Inspiration now, transcription later. I’ve also been putting a lot of ideas into calendars, Evernote and habitica too. Whatever it takes to get that idea into tangible language. Then spend an slotted time to chunk through notes into legibility. Data to information if you will. First of all shout out to all my legends that are in this shot! Two of the boys hustled hard to rock an aerially admirable FREEDOM in the sand while I was setting up the birdy. . . Then came the suggestion to get us all in the shot and from here I took photographic charge. The legends took direction perfectly and the results speak for themselves! A big ol’ ‘O’-full of legends :) . . Yes I’m aware I’m overusing legends, but it was one of two catch phrases from the weekend! The other is less...PG shall we say 🤣 . . I’ve had time to unpack my off day earlier this week. While still possibly related to moon cycles and witches ;) I dug deeper and it was more to do with an overwhelm. Sometimes I forget that I’m still having a human experience and I’m bound by the rules of my meat bag brain (sick name for a metal band). . . I was overthinking things and looking too far into the future. Trying to exist too far from the now. The only time that actually exists. . . All the elements of desire and direction and actionable outcomes lead to just one thing. FREEDOM. I was over complicating a base, being desire. To be completely free. . . Almost limitless channels can lead us there, and the exact manifestation of its implementation is limited only by our imagination. I’ve found following your truth or “Golden Thread” is the easiest way with little to no resistance. . . Tapping into that, and living in a state of flow is the challenge. And that doesn’t mean our ego won’t do its job and throw up roadblocks like the “how’s” and the limiting beliefs. Which is realistically all the “off” day was about. Details. The irony being that my career and passionin my photography career and passion revolve heavily around PHYSICAL details! . . I don’t want money to have money, I want it so can live free. I don’t want to create a lifestyle independent of any locale so I can brag on social about it, just the freedom. And I don’t want to rid myself of old habits, traits, beliefs and dead weight for the sake of personal achievement, just the freedom it will bring to me as a reality creator/shifter. . . “One of those days” Such a beautifully vague, flippant turn of phrase. As you can probably tell, the last few weeks for me have been pretty fantastic. I’ve levelled up almost all areas of my life. The big ones especially, that serve as an incubator for other areas. I like to call them multipliers. Areas of understanding that give fertility and growth to others. It’s been an expansive time full of love, adventure, health, abundance and grounding. Today, however, I’m having “one of those days”. Not bad, just a little “off”. They say misery loves company, and I couldn’t cringe harder at the visual of two old bitties chain smoking winnie blues and competing for the ultimate crown of victimhood, in the gritty smoking area of your local pokie ‘lounge’. In my reality, “misery loves company” plays out very differently. For example, when you realise another one, two, three or more of your core, gaggle of loved ones are also a little “off” for no apparent reason; strength, compassion and ‘un-offing’ ensues. The great and all powerful @tonyrobbins often remarks that giving is living. So when you can help another individual get past their jam, you regain some clarity and perspective and level up, giving rise to some self-love. It’s also possible that your energetic connection to a loved one, who, when ‘off’, could be the cause for your ‘offness’ in the first place. Fixing one physical representation of an existential whole may be all that’s required for wholistic, universal re-oning. Or maybe it’s the moon cycle or witches or some shit... If you made it this far I love you and I thank you for being on this journey with me. Thank you also for embracing my made-up words that I am more than confident in using on a day to day basis in the quest to break rules of communication to be better understood as a creative. Happy Friday beautiful people!! You know, if that’s relevant to your lifestyle/work week 😜 . This is one of my favorite aerial shots so far. It’s been a beautiful and interesting journey to level up my #aerialphotography game. I got asked recently how I conceptualise my shots. This is a perfect example of the exception to the rule! I had been driving for about 15 hours and the last 6 was flaaaat. I was in my head and I thought, “Hmmm, this is super boring from road level. I wonder...” Threw up the bird and sure enough, super awesome from the air! I love texture and pattern and contrast so I was buzzing! . I actually prefer this shot in landscape orientation which is the way it was composed and shot, but I’m growing on portrait landscapes. . In fact my early career all my portraits were landscape and my landscapes portrait 🤣 (this May be a Photog in-gag) . I digress... . The reason I wanted to post this is because (well aside from the bold oranges to break up my beach feed 😜) I see it as a metaphor for life. Sometimes when you see the same situation from the same angle you miss the true beauty of where you are in life. What if your life is actually super amazing and you’r just looking at it the same way as always? Try it on if you feel something could use a shake up! . For me personally, when I started to challenge my old program of thinking with some “what if’s” I started getting very different results. A really simple one is to try on a gratitude lens instead of a lack lens. . This will most likely be my own first purchase for my wall as soon as the store is live (yes it’s happening just had no idea how much work’s involved!). It's hard to put into words what I've experienced in the last week and a half. . Personal Growth and Transformation are quite the buzz words lately and in my opinion are completely subjective. It only really matters what they mean to YOU. And I guess they only mean anything when you're ready to tread that path. . The real juice happens when you take it from something you BELIEVE to be true and experience it for yourself and then take it to a position of KNOWING. . Once you get to that point you now have a responsibility to take action on your new reality. This isn't always easy. For me the biggest challenge was actually accepting that being authentic and the best version of myself is actually ok and that I ACTUALLY deserve it and the happiness and success that comes with it. Actually knowing that it's ok to follow the path of abundance just the way you are and to love self in the same way is tough for so many people, including myself. . Seems a bit ridiculous that the goal is just to tune in and find your authentic spark and then honour it with your actions and love self but hey, it seems that's the goal and key to life! . So much more to share and I’ve got so much to unpack. It’s been one hell of a rollercoaster that has ended well and truly up. . This is probably my favorite photo I’ve taken this year and includes some of the best legends I’ve met. . Of all my potential paths unfurling in front of me in this funny, humanly constructed “future” of ours, I know one thing is certain. FREEDOM!! Financially, , personally, locationally (probably not a word), and relationshipally (definitely not a word). . It’s starting to feel like magic the ways things are unfolding and I’ve got so many legends to thank, including now, myself :) . Ask and ye shall receive. Thanks for the feedback with a resounding YES to posting this shot today. It’s the first time I’ve taken advantage of my network of good eggs via the instagrams. I’ve had some resistance in the past to embracing social media. Was it a disagreement with the core harmful nature of the platform? Is it because everyone is doing it and I want to be different? Maybe it’s actually fear of rejection...what if I put myself out there and I hear something I’m not ready to accept? Maybe a touch of all of the above. Part of the work is removing attachment to external opinions and trusting the inner voice. Did I overcome a fear or do I just care less and less what others think of me? Good stuff to shine a light on! . Does that resonate with you? Is it possible you could release some attachment to your external or remove some judgement? . I love the stark contrast in composition in this shot compared to yesterday’s post. So same same but different. I love them equally and respect their individual personalities of course! 🤣🙏 Photographs are real people too right?? Kidding, but I suppose they have some sort of energy signature. I mean, they’re a physical manifestation of an artists vision so in that respect they are an extension of that individuals creative expression. In a similar way that the tools to capture the shot become almost organic in nature due to the intention imbued in them via the artist. What would you be doing if money wasn’t a consideration? . This is a question that’s come up a lot recently for me and it’s been front of mind for a time now. . Is it possible you’re kinda almost doing it but could push through to the next level? What’s stopping you from leveling up your reality? . Lots to ponder, but I’ve found recently that the trick is not to use too much brain thinky, instead lean more towards heart feely. . I’ve been through quite a profound reality shift very recently and to be honest I’m still reeling from the unquestionable truth that’s been staring me squarely in the face for longer than my ego would like to admit. . What other beautiful opportunities have I missed because of limiting beliefs and old thinking that no longer serves me? . Truth is it doesn’t matter. The past is donezo no matter what. What matters now is what am I going to do about it? . I want to take this opportunity to thank my followers for their beautiful feedback on my last post. I’m excited and reinvigorated to write more, shoot more and be more authentic. You guys are awesome! . Beautiful things can happen when you realize that simply tuning into your true, authentic, self can yield the happiness and abundance that is your birthright in this crazy game called life! .
