May I present to you Wheel Running In the Wild, a published research paper that delights me to no end:

This paper intended to test whether would mice would run on a wheel if they found one, to try and determine if this was a natural behavior or a stress response in captivity. They put a wheel in a protected little box with a camera that took pictures any time the wheel turned, and tallied up how often it was used by what.

Mice were, happily, the most common users of the wheel, and their patterns of use indicated they were doing so voluntarily once they figured it out.

But the second most common users.

Those were slugs.

When I was in 8th grade, we had mice in the science lab. (Never did anything with them, ig the teacher just thought they looked sciencey.) There were like 4 mice, and one of them was the biggest little asshole the rodent world had ever seen.

He would wait until one of the other mice got in the wheel, then go up to it on the outside--and spin it like he was playing Wheel of Fortune. Then he would just walk away. The mouse inside would either hang on for dear life and go for a ride on the mouse equivalent of a teacup ride from hell until it slowed, or hang on for a little bit, lose their grip, and be ejected at high speed out of the wheel.

This somehow never resulted in the other mice not using the wheel. They just go up to it, at most look around a little, and get back in.... And then Little Asshole would stop what he was doing, and once again come up to the wheel and spin it.

I guess it was a good lesson in centrifugal force, if nothing else.

so afaik this is how the development went:

-> nosferatu 1922 invented the idea that vampires die in the daylight, and to go with that it invented a ritual that the only way a vampire can be distracted long enough to not notice that the sun's coming up is if a woman who is pure of heart offers herself up to him as a sacrifice during the night. the heroine of the film entreats the vampire into her home, he drinks from her, and when he stands up again, whoopsie, sun is coming through the window.

-> nosferatu 1979 goes along with this, and it makes the scene of the heroine distracting the vampire much more sexual. he pulls her dress up her legs and we get the full experience of watching him lean over to bite her neck in bed while she trembles in fear and pain, and it adds the beat that he tries to leave before she pulls him back to her throat. however, the vampire remains fully clothed and their only main point of contact is his mouth on her neck while he stands to the side of her bed.

-> midnight mass 2021 takes up the idea that the only thing that can kill a vampire is sunlight, and while it doesn't have any precise ritual for how to distract a vampire into doing this, it features a scene with a very nosferatu-like vamp feeding on the heroine as the sun rises where the vampire looks up to try and leave and she redirects it back to her neck to kill time. the scene is more sensual than sexual, but the vampire is nakey and lies fully over her body and sort of gently undulates over her as she gasps in pain.

-> nosferatu 2024 takes basically the same scene setup as nosferatu 1979 where the vampire tries to leave and the heroine pulls him back, but it borrows a lot of the precise shot composition from midnight mass in visual homage. this shrink wrapped corpse-like vampire is nakey and lies fully over the heroine with a lot of the same close ups and angles of midnight mass, but this version is 100% a sex scene in addition to a vampire feeding scene.

i've finally finished reading Dracula, and i can now really say that my expectations have been subverted.

i knew the book is old, but still after all the media portraying vampires as a sort of sex icon at most or somewhat sex/eroticism-related at least (hello that one 90s film among others), and after tumblr memes about it being an anti-sex book, i really did expect it to be just that.

turns out it's a book where the cunning (but at times cartoonishly silly) undead ghoul gets tired of eating people in Romania, goes to London for more food, meets one (1) obstacle, runs away home scared for his life, and gets his head cut off on the way.

it's a horror comedy more than anything.

i'm beginning to like vampires now.
