You ask particularly after my health. I suppose that I have not many months to live; but, of course, I know nothing about it. I may add that I am enjoying existence as much as ever, and regret nothing.
Henry Thoreau’s last letter to Myron Benton, March 31st, 1862 (via defunctparadigm)
“If the day and the night are such that you greet them with joy, and life emits a fragrance like flowers and sweet-scented herbs, is more elastic, more starry, more immortal — that is your success.”
Henry David Thoreau (via wormwoodqueen)

Thom and Walden Part14
Thoreau is often quoted as a writer. One of his most quoted phrases is this "Not until we are lost, in other words not until we have lost the world do we begin to find ourselves, and realise where we are and the infinite extent of our relations." This quote is often paraphrased and the most important part is always missing. That part is the statement regarding losing the world. When no one except ourselves is influenced our true colours and beliefs come out. Solitude is so key, however so is community. A perfect balance is needed. This quote reminds me of the words of Christ. Please forgive as I attempt to quote scripture which is usually done poorly. However Christ alluded that when we lose the world we gain so much more. Thoreau and Christ were talking about two totally different things however. The same idea is there. And that is too not be of the world. But believe and to do what one knows is true. Until next time.

Walden part13
"I am convinced, that if all men were to live as simply as I then did, thriving and robbery would be unknown." This is a powerful statement. Very powerful. If he have nothing with the exception of food, shelter, clothing, a bed, photos and books; what is left to steal? As I sit on my bed and survey my room, what is there of monetary value? Besides the aforementioned there is not much. Just some money, cigars and some decorations? We need so little in life yet we store up and waste tons of money. I'm guilty of storing up. What we have matters not. I personally need to invest more in people and less with my money. Money doesn't make me happy. It often does the opposite. It leads one to believe that we don't have enough. When we have way to much of everything in this world. I need to love more and promote community. Not discourage it by judging people and buying objects to satisfy. This is backwards thinking. Time to think forwards. Until next time.

Walden Part12
Thoreau is quite happy in solitude, however he mentions how he Thoreau-ly (sorry I had to once) enjoys guests stopping by. In fact Thoreau had three chairs in his cabin. 1 for solitude, 2 for friendship, and 3 for society. The way I interpreted this is that one chair was for reading and writing. One was for when one friend came over to chat. However the third was a symbolic one. Thoreau claimed he had upwards of 15-20 people in his home discussing things. The majority of people there would be standing and discussing philosophical topics. So the third chair was more of an invitation of sorts. Having chairs is just something we have. But when chairs have other purposes other than just sitting. Community is encouraged. Furthermore Thoreau states 'there are many fine things which we cannot say of we have to shout' this is another way Thoreau encourages togetherness. When we shout we are being way too assertive. And not encouraging a discussion but more saying this is the way it is. That's why Thoreau enjoyed these discussions in close quarters. To eliminate the need to shout! Until next time.
Walden Part11
In the last two chapters that I have read in Walden, Thoreau speaks on reading and sounds. Two more senses which he constantly relates to. This got me thinking a great deal about slowing down to smell the roses. Reading We need to slow down so much more than we already do simply to read. So much can be gained from reading another's thoughts I see this as true every time I pick up Walden and my mind is flooded with ideas from Thoreau's thoughts. I've decided to add daily reading from at least three different sources to my list of rules for my resolution project. We will see if that keeps the ole dome sharp. These sources will come from three different forms of writing: Religious Text Philosophical or Memoir Text Fiction Text My goal starting out shall be roughly one chapter of each. This last chapter I read dealt with the sense of sound. Through this. It led me to analyse other senses such as sight and smell. Being a city dweller I personally do not has as much of an opportunity to enjoy nature. However there are so many things to see smell hear and feel. We all need to take the time to use these important senses. The musician John Fogerty sang "have you ever seen the rain" If you asked anyone the would say of course they have. But how many of us have stopped to actually see it. I mean stop what I'm entirely doing for 15-30 minutes to stare at the rain and drink it in completely. I know I haven't. Life is too busy It's in our power to slow it down Stop to see creation and the universe operate. Have you ever seen the rain? Until Next Time!
