rabastan lestrange’s life was always destined to be a shit storm, from the moment the little sperm hit the egg.

so okay basically little rabastan here is the accidental product of an affair that the lestrange mother had with another man. ofc her husband was furious and tried to convince her to get rid of the baby, but she refused and instead convinced mr. lestrange to stay with her and raise the boy as his own. their relationship was always going to be shaky after that, and mr. lestrange would never end up giving even a sliver of a damn abt dear old rab
rabastan always hated his childhood. he was abused and hated and spat on by other pureblood elite and he was constantly made brutally aware that he would never be a ‘lestrange’.
even when rodolphus earned the exact same abuse as he did, there was always a hint of jealousy there for rab --- rodolphus might’ve been rebellious, and he might not’ve wanted the title, but he was always going to be the true heir to the lestrange name while rabastan was always doomed to be just nothing.
multiple times rabastan considered just running away but he’s not stupid and he knew he couldn’t live on his own when he was so young. and so he just learnt to deal with it.
besides, as they grew older, rabastan and rodolphus started to form something of a bond, and even if they never talked about their feelings, they always sort of cared for each other
when he went to hogwarts, he was immediately sorted into slytherin, but that didn’t mean the pureblood elite were any more accepting of him. he was still the disgrace, still the odd one out, still the ‘black bastard’. it was an absolutely horrid environment to grow up in and definitely taught rabastan that he was always going to have to put himself first and that he could never trust anyone other than himself.
at this point he started to grow apart form rod a bit more too, because it just became more blindingly obvious that they were different people and they were treated different and that jealousy rabastan had always tried to hide started to flare up a bit more
when tensions were starting to build with the rise of voldemort and the formation of the death eaters, mr lestrange got even worse with his harsh way of ‘parenting’ and would yell at rabastan nearly every day that he was expected to join the ranks of the death eaters. this was in the later years of rabastan’s schooling, when he sort of stopped giving a fuck about his ‘family’ and started to form his own beliefs and yea they... did not belong with tom riddle lemme tell you that
it’s not that rab things muggles are on an equal playing field to wizards. they’re not, obviously, but he also knows what it’s like to be beaten and bruised as one of the ‘outsiders’. though he started to gain some kind of violent tendencies at this stage, he didn’t want to just be used and abused by the death eaters like he was in his family, and so he had to make a decision.
and ya boi decided to run away!! shit!! damn!!! aight!!!!! as soon as he graduated from hogwarts, he packed his bags and said bye-bye to the lestrange family name. he was a highly intelligent boy and already had a job lined up for him at the ministry, so he found a place to stay and officially cut himself off from the rest of his family --- including his brother.
though he’s kept the name it’s more out of convenience then any sort of sentiment. he hates the pureblood elite and never wants to be aligned with that family (especially his stepdad) again but lik..e.... he cant just not have a name, yknow??
anywhomst, when it comes to the war, he’s really kinda just neutral bc he’s sick of being bossed around all the time. for once he just wants to be able to tell himself what to do, so he’s like fuck u @ de’s but also fuck u @ the order, i am rabastan and i do whatever the heck i want.
even tho he works for the ministry he’s been involved in a lot of criminal activity tbh. he’s very violent and has actually tortured people he just hates on occasion, whether they be pureblood, muggleborn, order or de’s like he?? doesn’t care he just wants to get his anger out. he’s also heavily into drugs and that so yea that’s fun
ummm he doesnt trust anyone?? obviously?? very much where his narrow-minded thing comes in but also he still has this weird thing of caring what ppl think about him?? so if he thinks someone’s better then him say at his job he’ll get extremely jealous and destructive.
