Everything happened so quickly. The only thing Penny could focus on, or feel, were Riker’s arms around her. She might as well have been back in that alleyway, she was completely frozen with the blade up against her jugular. Then there were the two gunshots that broke her trance. Riker fell to the floor, grasping onto his shin as blood leaked through his trousers and through his fingers. He yelled out in pain and all Penny could seem to do was look down at him on the ground. The next thing she knew was happening was Pete calling their names and pushing her up the staircase and grabbing her by the wrist and dragging towards the exit. The door wouldn’t open so of course the panic began to rise inside once more. They didn’t have time to think of something and were quickly splitting up and hiding. Penny found herself inside an office space, with a large mahogany desk in the centre and bookshelves lining the walls. She hid behind the desk, knowing that it wasn’t probably the best place to be hidden, but in the darkness it was easier to miss her slim frame. There was nothing in the room for her to weaponise, besides maybe the lamp on the desk. Her breathing was loud, and the more she tried to calm down the louder she breathed. Even that didn’t drown out Riker’s yells of pain. After a while they finally subdued and the building was left quieter. Her legs were pulled up against her chest and blood ran down her neck from where Riker had pushed a little deep with the knife, she hadn’t that yet. She had no idea where her friends were, if they were okay. More importantly she didn’t know where her enemies were and that scared her. After what felt like an eternity of silence, which was probably only a couple of minutes, Penny heard somebody. Groans of pain seemed to be moving closer to her hiding spot from along the short hallway. She held her breath, reaching for that lamp she’d taken note of earlier. And waited.
Ruth felt an overwhelming feeling of devastation when her plan seemed to be going downhill. She had a hard time getting back to her feet from the floor, as she was holding back her rising need to throw a tantrum. By the time she was up, tears were beginning to form in her eyes. She walked towards Riker, with a clear goal in mind. “I need a cigarette.” she stated. “Give me a cigarette.” she half-begged, before reaching into the pocket of his jacket for the pack and a lighter. With a shaky hand she put the cigarette between her lips and lit it with a great struggle, due to lack of focus. She inhaled, instantly coughing, as tears streamed down her face. She took a seat against the wall, not far from Alicia’s body and cried, childishly, while smoking her first cigarette ever and letting Riker do the rest of the hunting for now.
