she looks up, smiling easily at ryan. “please, call me peyton.” it’s not like it was her name anyways, just what everyone called her. “is there anything you’ve noticed on your rounds i should know about??” she always wants to know about everything – wants to be up to date and whats going on. “no – i’m fine, unless there’s something you wanted to go over.”
“peyton, of course,” he corrected himself, offering a small smile in return as she went on. ryan was overly-cautious and overly-suspicious so he had to remind himself to reign himself in and only give her, his boss, the relevant details. “nothin’ out of the ordinary. there were a few kids trying their luck with getting up on the roof, one guest got turned around a couple times but she made it back to to fourth alright and miss macdonald- eilidh- suggested we get some, ah, ‘mythical creature’ floats for the pool.” he shrugged a little before adding, “so nothing too urgent. everything seems in working order.”
harper’s tapping the button on the elevator over and over, not quite hopping as she does it but unable to stay still. “c’mon, hurry, hurry.” she talks at the elevator. “ugh, fine.” she turns away from the elevator. “this things broken, amuse me before i do something stupid.”
“i’m not sure that is strictly covered by my job description here, ma’am,” ryan answered, raising a slight eyebrow at her promise of doing something ‘stupid’. he figured he should stick around though, just in case he had to step in and reign in some chaos. “i can give maintenance a call if you like.”
Performing was much more work than one would think. Never mind the singing — there was the act that went along with it; the level of charisma and energy one had to exude for more than just a few hours at a time in order to truly do a good job. More often than not, Nina found herself feeling drained, able to find comfort in one thing only.
Exhausted after having completed a set, Nina had slumped herself down by the bar, flagging down the bartender before she even had the chance to get comfortable in her seat. “A Manhattan, please,” She requested, “And…” Eyes flickered over to the only other person at the bar, looking just as downtrodden as she was. “Whatever they’re having.”
Ryan normally looked stoic around the hotel. There were rare sightings of smiles and laughs louder than a chuckle but not many, not at work. Today was different though. He did his best to keep his mind off his past, off the accident at his old job- that had happened to someone he considered a friend- but today he wasn’t winning against forgetting. That’s why he’d stayed a little later, intending to order a drink, when Nina Rivera took the seat just by him.
“Whiskey neat,” he said to the bartender before turning his gaze back to her, one of those smiles on his face. “Well thank you kindly, Miss Rivera. You were, ah, amazing up there tonight. It was quite the show.”
Vienna’s eyes fluttered shut as she settled comfortably on the sun chair she kept on the roof. The off-limits area had become a sort of sanctuary for the woman. A little over a year ago, she started regularly going up there and had the pleasure of never running into another person. Which was a big deal considering how crowded the hotel was all the time. She was practically dozing off when she heard the roof hatch slam shut, causing her to jump. Sighing, but not moving or opening her eyes, she kept her voice steady. “You shouldn’t be up here.”
The rooftop was off-limits, that much Ryan knew and usually he never would have gone near it. There’d been some rowdy teens (was he thinking like a grandpa now?) hovering nearby earlier and he’d just wanted to make sure things were alright, that there was no trouble. He hadn’t expected anyone to be up there, let alone Vienna Hawthorne. Six months wasn’t that long but it was long enough to know he shouldn’t piss off the owner’s daughter. “Strictly speaking ma’am, no one should be up here.” A small smile tugged at his lips though, tone light but he’d deny it was joking. “Then again, I didn’t see anything. My apologies for interrupting.”
she has the open door policy ( even to guests ) because it makes it look like she has nothing to hide – the open door is a way to let people in, to make her approachable to make people trust her. trixie peyton is sitting at her desk avoiding the computer on her desk though, hands shaking as she reads the letter, worn and tapped together. the age of it is reflected and maybe she should just replace it already, but she doesn’t want too. she thinks it’s important to keep it in the state it was originally written, spelling mistakes and all. she folds the letter the moment she hears someone outside of her office, slips it into the pocket of her dress. “are you looking for me??” she calls when the person doesn’t come into her office.
ryan had been trying to be subtle when he walked by peyton tam’s office, pausing at the side of the door just in case anything suspicious happened. completely professional. well, as professional as he could be fighting off a sheepish smile and embarrassed flush as she called out to him. it only took a moment to get his cool back as he spun on his heel, entering her door frame and offering a small (very subtle, very chill) nod. “just doing the rounds, miss tam,” he said, glancing over at her; maybe looking a little too long. he was going to ask how she was but instead- “is there anything i can do for you while i’m here, boss?”

23:15 ⁏ outside the lounge.
( open to all ! )
it was a rare occasion to spy camille anywhere other than front and centre stage of the lounge. if one were attempting to seek out the brunette, they would be sure to find her crooning soft and sultry notes into a microphone ; effortlessly capturing the attention of an audience with her performance. well, on most nights, that was the case. right now, however, the svelte female was stood outside ; seeking a tranquil atmosphere and solace in a dark corner. as a figure emerged from the shadows, camille resisted the urge to roll her eyes. plucking the cigarette from her lips, delicate fingertips keeping hold of it, she cast a fleeting glance toward the other. “ forgive me if i’m not in the most sociable of moods. i wasn’t expecting company. ” finally her curious gaze moved to fall upon their face, a defined eyebrow arching. “ here to blow off some steam? or to find a shoulder to cry on about your problems? if it’s the latter, i’m most definitely not your girl. ”
“that’s quite alright, miss lorente. i’ve never been much for sociable moods anyways.” ryan offered her a small smile when she looked up from her cigarette, the corners of it twitching at her questions, holding back a laugh. working security at the hotel meant that he had seen more than a few shows in the lounge. he was on the clock of course but that didn’t mean that he hadn’t enjoyed the music. “lucky for me, my tears are all dried up this evening. nah, i just came out here to get a little air. it used to be a smoke break for me too but i’ve been trying to quit,” he shrugged, opening his previously closed palm to reveal a packet of cherry flavoured gum. “uphill battle but not a problem,” then he added, that smile twitching back up again, “what about you? needed a break from the adorin’ fans?”

22:05 ⁏ the balcony.
( open to all ! )
three and a half vodka martini’s later and still saphira had yet to feel the effects that she desired. the lounge was over-populated and the older man perched next to her that had insisted on supplying her with drinks for the rest of the night was beginning to rile her. thus, plastering an overly exaggerated polite smile onto her lips, she excused herself from his company ; self-assured footsteps led the female toward the exit leading to the balcony. stepping outside, the brunette shut the door after her ; an audible click easily discernible in the rather tranquil atmosphere. exhaling a sigh of relief, red-bottomed stilettos carried saphira forward until she reached a halt, drawing in a breath of fresh night air into her lungs. then, the sudden sound of a figure approaching from behind disturbed her train of thought, a huff of irritation escaping her nose. “ i think you’ll find this space is occupied, ” she stated, not even bothering to face the stranger as she addressed them ; the cool breeze blowing loose chestnut tendrils across her face. “ close the door on your way out. ”
ryan was keeping himself to himself as he always did, a watchful eye on the guests in the lounge as they drank, laughed or took a quiet moment to themselves. he expected- he was hopeful- it would be a quiet night, not too many complaints and especially no rowdy fist fights over the upholstery. it gave him time to think. had he bought enough cat treats for hook who was probably curled up on his best shirt right now at home? should he stay a little later than usual just to make sure things were under control? would he continue to fuel the wild imaginings of the lifeguard- eilidh- who worked here concerning his quote-unquote ‘mysterious past’? point was, he was content but he was also keeping an eye on one of the older gentlemen sat beside a beautiful woman, offering to buy her drinks. he was sure it was nothing but still. he saw as she made her polite exit, keeping his eye trained on the man before settling back down. of course he should mind his own business and he just knew that no doubt she could take care of herself- still. he’d just pushed the door open to balcony enough to check. “my apologies, ma’am. i was just checking that everything was alright here,” he explained, hesitating before adding, “is it?”

21:15 ⁏ inside the lounge.
( open to all ! )
if one were attempting to seek out the male, you would be sure to find him roaming the corridors and hallways of the hotel. mostly, stood at the doors of the main entrance. tonight, however, he was making the most of his night off, perched atop one of the few vacant stools dotted alongside the bar. with calloused digits curled around his glass, dark orbs peered into its amber-coloured contents. propping an elbow against the wooden surface, ezra took a long sip, welcoming the familiar burn that trailed a path down his throat. it was nice, having a quiet drink to himself and seeking solace in the bottom of a glass was far from foreign to ezra and so far, so good. although, like all good things, they must come to and end and as a figure slid into the empty seat next to him, he fought the urge to roll his eyes. lowering his glass whilst holding onto it in a rather precarious manner, ezra cast a sideways glance toward the other. “ if you’ve come over here for idle chit-chat, i’m afraid you’re wasting your time, ” he stated, tone flat and laced with utter indifference. taking another sip of his whiskey, the male’s attention remained fixed upon surveying his immediate surroundings.
ryan’s shift had felt longer than usual. he didn’t know if it was because of some of the old stuntman injuries acting up or because the rumoured ‘black widow’ on fifth had been trying to butter him up again. of course by ‘butter up’, he did mean attempt to add him to the list of mysteriously deceased husbands. it was flattering and all but he had a better sense of self preservation than that. the point was, his break couldn’t have come soon enough. ryan made his way to the lounge, letting out a breath as he lingered in the doorway, scanning the room (it had become second nature at this point) before he spotted ezra at the bar. he had at least six months on ryan when it came to working security here so he was content to take whatever cues from him.
“oh yeah because i’m known for my idle chit-chat,” he said, leaning against the bar and gesturing to the bartender for the usual water. “the black widow on fifth was askin’ for you today by the way. thought you might like to know just in case you were thinking about giving up on this life for the well-kept one.”

Ryan Kim / 29 / Former Stunt-Man / Current Security @Hawthorne Hotel
cw; death mention
Ryan grew up in the kind of small town where football was a sure fire way to get out. He played in high school good enough to get a scholarship to college where he’d go on to study law. He always wanted to fight against injustice and make a difference. And he wanted to make his dad proud.
While he pretty much dedicated himself 100% to his studies, leaving little room for anything else (read: fun), he has always been a romantic. He loves romance, he loves loves and one day he’d like something like that for himself. He’s had a lot of crushes but he’s not one to make the first move and the thing was... He thought he had all the time in world. School first, become a lawyer, make something of himself. Love could come later.
Then his dad died. It was an accident, no one to blame or fight in court- just an accident. Ryan didn’t really know what to do with himself after that. He tried to keep routine, keep working, keep... But what was the point? His passion for it, his drive had fizzled out and he just felt lost.
So he quit. It was impulsive, maybe stupid but he just needed a change. Everything felt...like it could disappear. Nothing was permanent. He drifted around for a while, bouncing from place to place and never getting too close to anyone. That’s when got the gig as a stunt man. He loved it, the thrill of it and maybe even a tiny bit, the fact that things could go south. It was a risk but he never got in an accident, like his dad, not once.
Everything was kinda chill then. He was just #doinglife. Met a few movie stars, had a few laughs. Then there was accident. Ryan was supposed to be the one using the motorcycle for the stunt- everyone on set knew that-, it was just a coincidence that Ryan missed the start of the shoot. That they threw someone else on. That the brakes went haywire even though the bike had been checked and checked, and checked again. He started to feel paranoid then, unsafe on set and it wasn’t the kind of near-death thrill he usually looked for.
So he packed up again and now here he is working security at Hawthorne!
