Chapter 22: Something New
At the vanguard, Little Man was waits patiently for some news on the current situation. "Hi, Little Man," says a voice. He turns to the direction of the voice to see Laufeia. "Oh, hi, Laufeia," he says. As the conversation commences, Laufeia looks at the chaos outside and says jokingly, "So, it seems they've started the party without you, huh?" "Huh? Oh, no. I'm just out for some fresh air," says Little Man. "So it would seem," says Laufeia. She pauses , then says, "Well, what if I tell you that you have more power than you think?" "What was that?" he says, confused. "Never mind that," says Laufeia, "I hear your friends are trying to rescue Ryne, yes?" Little Man nods as he says, "Yes." Laufeia sighs and says, "Well, I'm quite dubious that they'll succeed without your help." "I'm sure of it," Little Man says adamant. Laufeia, unsure of this, makes a hint, "Well, what if I told you that the military is joining the party?" Little Man ponders for a moment before saying, "Hmm, that IS odd..." Laufeia continues to explain, "And that's not the worst part. They're Tharsians posed as the Dystopian Military. And they're planning to interfering with your friends' efforts." "Tharsis," Little Man responds, " I... I heard about them. But why? What are they doing here?" "They plan to restore their pride they once had before the Corporate Wars. Can you guess how?" Little Man answers, "By destroying Dystopia?" "Yes," Laufeia says, "and interfering with the rescue efforts is the start. Not even the so-called "Great" Payton Tucker can help it." That title, the Great Payton Tucker, causes Little Man to respond begrudgingly, "You really have to call him that?" Laufeia assures him, "He has potential, he has a reputation to live up to. But that doesn't mean a thing if he cannot make a difference when it counts." The spiders are bad enough, sure, but if they're allied with the Tarsians, then it would have to be up to you, no doubt." Little Man ponders, sighs, and then says, "Very well, but remember: I'm only doing this for you and you alone." Laufeia nods before saying, "So be it," and disappearing, leaving him to ponder on the situation.
Meanwhile, at the city itself, as the chaos ensues, things were going in the favor of the Graduates. At least until he sees military personnel on the streets. "That's odd," Payton says, confused, "I don't remember calling in the military." "Really?" says Aron, "Maybe you should talk to Nine-Tailed Fox about to this." Payton nods and taps into Jonah, "Nine-Tailed Fox, this is Payton. Can you hear me?" "Read you loud and clear," says Jonah. "Why's the military here?" Payton questions Jonah. Jonah, confused, responds, "What? What do you mean?" "The military's here. Did you call them?" Payton continues to question. That is when Jonah starts gets suspicious, "Hmm... Now that you mentioned it, I don't remember calling anyone from the military... Stand by..." He then proceeds to contact the military, "This is Commissioner Jonah Wilson of the Dystopia City Police Department. To all military units, if you can hear me on this frequency, please respond." There is no response, much to the suspicions of the KNIGHTS. "Jonah, what's going on?" Payton questions Jonah, to which the latter replies, "Nobody's responding, hold on." Jonah repeats the same transmission, hoping for a response, only to find nothing. Payton starts to get even more suspicious when he finally received a transmission from the military. Over the comms, one personnel says, "Alright, all preparations are complete and we're on standby. Awaiting orders." Payton begins to feel sick that something's wrong. "Who is this." No response. Another military personnel then says, "Good, begin the operation." This creates confusion within the ranks when suddenly, a sound of machine gun fire can be heard followed by Aron's distressed response, "They're firing on us!" Jonah, shocked to hear this, asks, "What's going on?!" to which Payton replies, "We're under attack!" Jonah, unsure what to make of this, then proceeds to say, "Something's not right... Avoid fire as much as possible, but getting Ryne out of there is till your top priority. Hurry!" The KNIGHTS all comply and proceed to continue on with the mission despite taking enemy fire.
Elsewhere within downtown, Solomon Wagner, along with Drezo, proceeds to head to the rendezvous point when, out of nowhere, the spiders start swarming the bus. Drezo concerned of the situation, tries to warn Solomon, to which the latter replies, "Yeah, I know!" Solomon struggles to shake the spiders off to no avail. Solomon reaches to Jonah, "Pretty Boy to Nine-Tailed Fox, we've got a problem!" Jonah asks, "What's your situation?" Solomon then continues, "The spiders are attacking the bus! I can't hold them off!" Jonah, realizing that the situation has become even more dire, barks, "Get the hell out of there, you're going to have to take our asset to the precinct on foot! Sorry!" Solomon then screams in frustration, then orders Drezo to "bail out", to which he complies. Then, a mischievous Solomon pulls out a grenade and monologues, "Good thing I've got a surprise waiting for you..." He pulls the pin, drops it, and gets out just in time before the grenade, and the bus itself, explodes, killing the spiders nearby. Solomon then urges Drezo to keep moving and the two race to the precinct. As they are almost to the Rendezvous point, Solomon contacts Payton, "Payton, get over here!" Payton heads to their position with the mask. Solomon asks Payton on how are things looking, to which the latter responds, "Lousy, the military turned on us and I have no idea why..." Both Solomon and Drezo look at each other in confusion before Payton asks, "Anyways, you're Drezo, right?" Drezo is shocked at first, but then quickly responds, "Yes." Payton then hands over the mask and says, "I believe this is for you." Drezo puts on the mask and now assumes leadership. Payton then turns to Ryne's general direction and says, "Now if you'll excuse me, I have some unfinished business to take care of." Payton then sets his thruster pack to overdrive and sets off to the Jamison Memorial Building.
As Odula, who is accompanied by two bodyguards, is about to commence the ritual, it was interrupted by Payton. "Odula..." Payton says vindictively. Odula then complements, "I must admit, I'm impressed that you came this far," before gloating, "However, you're too late; your ring-tailed friend will fall victim to this sacrifice. Tell him goodbye." Payton then charges and kicks Odula away from Ryne. As Payton stands between Odula and his victim, Odula orders his bodyguards to attack him. The efforts of the bodyguards, however, were fatally futile as Payton slays them in rapid succession. Now, only one spider remains. Odula starts thinking, "Well, it's like they always say; if you want something done right, do it yourself," before lunging towards Payton. Payton, however, was ready for him and grabs his legs before tossing him to the other side of the building, causing the spider to plummet to his apparent death. Ryne, amazed by what he just witnessed, says, "Thanks! I figured it was only a matter of time before somebody saves my butt." Payton starts untying ryne and returns, "No problem." Ryne finally gets free and comments, "Well, the sooner we're outta here, the better." Before they could make their escape, however, a webline, from out of nowhere, shoots at Payton's chest, much to Payton's shock and horror. It is Odula, who somehow survived the fall. He gloats, "You really thought you could beat me? Think again!" before trowing Payton off the rooftop, sending him flying. Ryne calls out his name helplessly as Odula roars with laughter.
The chaos ensues as Payton continues to plummet to the streets below. Just when he is about to meet his maker, however, a Purple dragoness, Arun, grabs Payton and clutches on to the wall to slow down the fall before landing safely. Payton, shocked and confused, asks the dragoness, to which she rudely resopnds, "Maybe you should be skipping the intros, kid." This offended Payton. She then continues, "I mean, you almost had your ass splattered." Payton makes a sarcastic remark by saying, "Real mature..." before explaining, "I need to get up there, I was rescuing someone." Oh, and you still haven't told me your name." Arun, annoyed, introduces herself followed by, "Now that you know my name, shouldn't you be with your mommy and daddy?" much to Payton's chagrin. "But seriously," Payton insists, "I need to get back up there!" Arun scoffs, "So that you can do what? Have your ass splattered again?" Payton insists, "There's somebody in trouble and he needs help!" As Arun begin to realize the situation, she then asks, "Is he a friend of yours?" to which Payton replies, "Something like that." "Very well," Arun says, "but how are you gonna get up there?" Payton smirks, "I dunno, I's hoping you could help me out with that." Arun then agrees, "I think I can manage..." after Payton explains that he's not that heavy.
Welp, my friend's dead, the storm ain't lettin' up, and I'm gonna be spider chow. Then, the first drop of rain hits and the dinner bells are ringing. "Now, to deal with you..." Then, I think to myself, "That guy's really tough. How am I gonna stop him?" Just then, everything slows down as that creepo lunges at me. Good thing I'm quick enough to move out of the way before he can make a meal of me. But he ain't done, "You think you can trick me twice?!" I return the taunt, "Just try me!" The creep lunges at me again, this time, I leap over 'im. I can tell he's pissed, "Hold still!" I crack my knuckles and tell him to "bring it on". And just like that, without warning, he knocks me down with one hit. Thankfully, I's able to kick him off before he could attack me even further. I can taste my own blood and, to be honest, doesn't taste good, so I spit it to the side. I then proceed to attack him (big mistake), and he clutches me by the throat. You have no idea how close I've come to losing consciousness before kicking him in the eye, which caused him to let go. I back away from him and, still, I'm trying to figure out how to stop him. Then it hit me: arachnids are known to have stingers to paralyze their prey by injecting them with venom. If I could slide under him one more time, he'll use the stinger and jab it at the roof top. That should get him stuck and buy me some time to figure out my next phase of the plan. "Come get me, barf breath!" I say just to piss him off into lunging at me. And the ploy worked, he lunges at me. I then had to wait 'till the last second before sliding underneath him. The stinger narrowly misses my head, but hits the concrete and, as it turns out, I was right; he's stuck. Now for phase two. I ponder for a moment, "How am I able to take this guy out if I don't have either the muscle or the foot size to do it?" Then, it hit me. I could use my friend Dal to take him out, I'd just have to say something condescending in order to get her attention. I am probably gonna regret this too. "Dal!" I shout as loud as I could. I cross my fingers and shout yet again, "Come give daddy some sugar!" It took some time, but the ploy worked; she's huge and angry. Now to get near the freak and have her attacks line up perfectly. She of course tried to grab me, but I dodged it while I was at it. I look at Odula and realize that he's almost free. However, my clever plan has been foiled when Payton shows up. "Payton, what the heck are you doin'?!" "What do you mean," he responds, "I'm trying to rescue you." "You idiot!" I rebuke him, "You compromised us!" He looks at me confused at first, but as he looks at Dal, she glares back at him. Before he is able to react, he gets socked along with the wall he was standing on. And there he is, lying motionless. I ran up to him and wake him up. "You freaking idiot!" I rebuke yet again, "What were you thinking?" Just then, as he regains his composure, Dal stretches out her hand and grabs us. I know what she's gonna do; she's gonna eat us whole. I look at him and he stares back at me. "Sorry, bud," he says, "dunno what I was thinking." I can even see the fear in his eyes. I look down into her gaping maw and wait for the inevitable. And then, just when the end of us is near, I can hear a sonic boom...
