Besoms: How to Make Your Own

Buying a besom can not only be expensive, but also quite difficult to find one that you like. Making your own provides you with artistic liberties. It can be as fancy or simple as you want. 

Here’s an example of beautiful besoms!

I haven’t had the chance to make a besom yet, but it’s something I’ll definitely be doing in the future! Show me how yours looks! (Whether you make one or already have one!)

Need: 

- Wood for the handle. 4-5 feet in length, hefty girth. Can find outside or buy.

- Twigs for the bristles. Can be any length, but ideally 7-13 inches. Can find or buy.

- Sandpaper

- Twine or some strong string

      Optional:

- Wood Stain

- Paint (in any color) 

- Herbs like Lavender (can be used along with twigs for bristles)

- Decorative items

- Knife

Steps:

1) After you’ve found the wood you want to use as your handle, you have two options. You can either carve the bark off or sand it down. Personally, I’d carve the bark off then sand it. This way you can either use a wood stain or paint the handle. (If you want to carve or burn any sigils or symbols into the handle, do it before you stain or paint. Recarve after if necessary.)

2) While your working on the wood handle, soak the bristles in water overnight. This makes the material pliable so it won’t break whenever you try to manipulate it. Let it dry for a couple hours before using it. 

3) Arrange a layer of twigs around the branch and use twine to secure it. Keep adding layers until you’re satisfied with the fullness and length of the besom. Once you get to the outer layers, you can begin to add the herbs if you want. The last layer should cover the broom handle and all other ties. 

4) Either fold over the tops of the bristles of the last layer and tie again to secure or clip them to create an even top. This step isn’t necessary, but it makes the besom look more complete. 

5) Add any decorative items you want.

Don’t forget to consecrate any witch items before use!

If you don’t want a large besom, you can adjust the size of the handle and bristles to suit your desires. The steps are still the same. :)

📖writing + witchcraft📖

writing has always been a passion of mine, and there’s nothing i love more than combining personal hobbies with witchcraft! there’s so many ways you can use writing to boost your craft, or use your craft to boost your writing; these are the ways i personally do!

honour what’s special in your craft. if you’re theistic, dedicate a piece of writing to them. if you’re not, but you want to honour something else, you could write about the earth, or the stars, or absolutely anything. this would make a great grimoire or b.o.s entry!

learn to use automatic writing. this is a cool kind of divination that allows your subconscious/higher self, or spirits around you to control what you write. i’ve tried this a few times and it’s quite fun, but i’ve always wanted to try using it as inspiration for creative writing! here is a much better post on it by @satinsouled.

start journaling. journaling is a great way to clear your mind and encourage creativity, but it can be really useful in witchcraft too! write about your witchy experiences however you want to, so you have reference points to come back to later

draw inspiration from your craft. similar to the previous point, if you’ve had an interesting experience that you’d like to write about, why not turn it into a poem or short story? if you worship deities, write a story about them. create your own world of witchiness that stems from your personal experiences - your writing will always be unique and interesting because no one else will have had your experiences!

use tarot cards and readings as inspiration. instead of reading tarot like you normally would, write prose or poetry inspired by it to note down your reading. i think the best example by far is @tarotprose, one of my favourite blogs on tumblr and actually my inspiration to start combining witchcraft and poetry.

souped-up spellwork. its easy to work spells you find online, word-for-word, because you think that’s how it’s ‘meant’ to be done. there are some people who say their way is the ‘only’ way, but that’s a toxic way of thinking. use poetry and creative writing to create your own, personalised chants, invocations and spells! your words will have more power for you than anyone else’s, and you’ll probably find your spells will work much better if you put your own personal touch into them.

“Keep Pain Away” Sigil

It’s really crappy looking, but it worked well for me lol. I had cramps in school once, and so I made this baby up, drew it on my skin, and focused all my energy onto the sigil. It actually worked for a bit, although afterwards I was dirt tired. It made it so I could friggin walk again without physically almost falling down from pain, hahahaaaaa…I hate periods…

Nightmare Warding Stuffed Animal Spell

A spell to enchant one of your furry stuffed friends to protect you through the night from nightmares and unpleasant dreams.

You will Need:

A stuffed animal

Scissors

Needle and thread

Small piece of Amethyst (prevents and protects from nightmares)

Small piece of Rose Quartz (brings happy dreams)

Paper and Pen

A sigil that prevents nightmares

Steps:

Using your pen, on the small piece of paper draw your sigil. Place it to the side with your crystals. Make sure your crystals are very small so that they don’t make holding your stuffed animal uncomfortable.

Kiss your stuffed animal to let it know that you wish not to harm it and if needed speak to it a bit.

On a seam that could easily be repaired using your scissors gently snip some of the thread so there is a small opening.

“With these crystals and sigil, I ask you to protect me in the night from the dreams that cause me unrest.” place in crystals and sigil

Sew up the hole as neatly and tightly as you can, you wish it not to rip open again.

Kiss where you have sealed the seam. “I thank you deeply for you help.”

Place on your bed. When sleeping make sure stuffed animal is on the bed with you or in your arms.

To cleanse after a few nights place in the window in the sunlight or moonlight for 2-3 hours.

What is Visualization?

Visualization is “the formation of a mental image of something”. It’s the visual aspect of imagination, but to a witch it is more. Seeing something in ones mind is not something that comes naturally for everyone, but you use it all the time. When you remember something, when you dream, when you daydream, and when you ponder about your future, but doing it on command takes practice. Visualization is a very important tool in witchcraft.

Why is it important?

Visualization is using your mind to effect the outside world. To start off there are two kinds of visualization; outcome based and process based. Both are useful to the craft. It is relevant because it allows you to believe that the goals you have for yourself are possible and helps you focus on that general purpose when thinking about the future. This circles back to intent; arguably the basses of all magick and the law of attraction itself. Visualization works hand in hand with intent in other ways too. This skill helps you make sure that your intent is the right one by visualizing all the possibilities.

When should you use visualization?

You can visualize any time of the day! You are using it all the time without even noticing. Any chance you get to practice is always good! In witchcraft you can use visualization for many things:

Casting a circle

Astral protection

Dreaming

Cleansing

Invoking

Divination

Energy work

Finding intent

Enchanting

Vanishing

Charging

Spells

Auras

How do I use visualization?

First you must have intent, like everything else in your craft and in your life in general. When you visualize get all your senses involved. Make it feel real. Let the vision come to you naturally and try not to force it. Just focus and let yourself get emotional. Fully immerse yourself into what you’re doing. You can see it, feel it, smell it, hear it, move it. It is so real you can feel like it’s actually happening. Now you are visualizing!
