WIP of my KuroTsukki itabag last week! I put in another order for merch so it’ll be packed with merch when I’m done! Kuroo’s side seems emptier since I couldn’t find his yukata strap until after I shipped this order out. :(

Notes on Taobao-sold factory defects:

It’s really difficult to tell defected rubber straps apart from the actual merch, such as slight color variations and lack of small details.

Buttons are essentially large mistakes like the pinback was set the wrong way (hence harder to use, therefore cheaper)

A good way to get merch if your character/pairing/person (such as Kpop idols- not judging here! I’m making a BM (K.A.R.D.) bag soon!) if you can’t every win any auction you can, or it’s rare to find what you want.

My bag is also from Taobao, found here! I got the white option. It’s a great alternative to the Zakkamart tote and much cheaper! :)

It’s been a while!

Currently working on styling my Tae Takemi wig, but lemme write a quick writeup about adding wefts and my opinion on Arda silky wefts soon!

Theoretically, for satsuki (klk), could one cut slits in the skirt, insert triangular pieces, and use those pieces as the sort of hidden portion of a pleat as a way to make her dress without a seam at the hips/waist?

Could possibly work if they were box pleats, but it wouldn’t work for the knife pleats she has. The knife pleats go around the skirt evenly with a knife overlapping the 2/3 “center” pleats that carry on into the dress. You also have to deal with the near complete absence of seam allowance; even at 1/16″ seam allowances it’s going to appear on the edge of the knife AND appear in the middle of the pleat where the pleat opens.

The theory you’re thinking of is more meant for Nonon, since she has triangles drawn in her pleats within the dress. 

Kamui Cosplay recently did something that might work for Satsuki that she was using for the dress for her Summoner cosplay. You can find it here. She even lists the pattern she used! I also know tattobot on Instagram did something very similar for her own Satsuki a couple years back.

*chants loudly* BEADS BEADS BEADS I finally squared up and started my sleeves for Soleil. No actual quilting since I live in Texas....maybe I'll find a way to make detachable sleeves one day.... I'm using 2 sizes of beads just to give it dimension. Hghhh 100 more to go.

About Cosplay Construction-Related Questions

Alright, friends, I’m going to be blunt:

Not Good Questions: “How do I make (insert character name) costume/wig? / Can you make a tutorial for (character name)?” “What wig do I use for (character name)?” ((Note, specific make-up tutorial requests are usually fine since those are ostensibly meant to be redone multiple times))

Better questions: “Did you use a pattern for (character)’s coat and if so do you mind sharing the details?” “What material did you use for (character)’s shirt and would you recommend it? I can’t find anything opaque enough locally.” “I’ve read a few tutorials on (material) for making props, but would you recommend any specific one? The way you finished your (item made with said material) is exactly what I’m going for” “Do you have any tips for (technique used on an costume that you’ve googled to make sure there aren’t already 10 very thorough tutorials on)” “I’m trying to decide between an Arda Westley and Pippin wig for Levi; which one would you recommend?” “While you’re making (character that you’re currently working on), would you mind taking lots of progress pictures / posting a write-up afterwards?” and such. 

“Good” questions ask for help and opinions to expand on the work and research that you’ve already done. They ask for a specific person’s specific knowledge on a subject, not something you’d pick up off of google in 2 minutes of searching. You might not get the answer you need, but you’re showing that you’ve done your base work and you’re not using a cosplayer as your personal Google lackey. “Bad” questions say, “I’ve put no thought into this. Please do all the work for me.” Even if you don’t mean it like that, that’s the implied message. And let me tell you, when you spend dozens of hours in planning and patterning alone, that complete disregard for the value of your time really sucks. 

Please consider exactly what it is you’re asking a cosplayer to do when you ask a question, and if the answer is anything like “Do the work for me”, reconsider your question. SHIKI OUT.

Working in some quick project for OniCon next week! I'm thickening up the wig and modding this cosplay to fit me better.

Ready for some minor detailing and then painting, then I can attach the buckles so I don’t need to tie them lol

They’re not perfect — I don’t like how the tops attach, but the way I’ve done it is the only way to keep flexibility. But what matters most is that this hell costume is almost done, and it’s not terrible considering it’s my first time working with black worbla.

It’s funny to walk in because while it doesn’t restrict motion much, the knees DO bump together, so you have to either sweep your legs in the side as you step (first gif) or walk like a robot (second gif.) I’m thinking this costume is not going to have a long wearing time, hence bringing lots of casual costumes to Youma to offset.

Camilla does sort of walk like in the first gif in her Birthright cutscene, but goddamn Nohrian armor makes so little fucking sense. I think that’s why I’ll never cosplay my Dark Knight! Corrin /0/

MORE LASERCUTTING WITH THE DANGEROUS LADIES!

Hello, friends! Last time you saw us laser cutting, we did a bunch of stuff with black worbla and the original stuff. The fine people at Worbla and @heatgunning saw this and thought it was super cool, so they invited us to visit their HQ and offered us more worbla to test on, and we said sure, we’d love more excuses to cut things with lasers. Edgar at Toronto Laser Services also thought it was a good time and invited us back to cut more worbla, too, so now we’re a trifecta of lasercut thermoplastics.

So last week, we went back to TLS give the other three kinds of worbla a run under the laser cutter. We did some basic tests and cuts just to put the materials through their paces, and we’ll be doing more soon! So on the docket for today we have:

Transparent Worbla aka TranspArt.

Mesh Worbla aka MeshArt.

Red Worbla, aka FlameRed.

(Red, right? RED? I had never heard of it when Amanda put it in our hands, and it is live now, but I haven’t seen anyone do anything with it, so it’s kind of exciting to like… be the first people to laser-cut it… maybe… :) )

Remind me again, Jenn, what is laser cutting?

Getting a robot to do all the grunt work for you because cutting is tedious and is hard on your hands! Hey-oh. Laser cutting is using a computer-controlled powerful laser to cut or etch materials –– anything from paper to acrylic to wood to metal. It uses vector files to cut perfect lines. It is a godsend.

And where does one do laser cutting?

We use Toronto Laser Services, but there are likely laser cutting services in just about any major city –– you just have to do some digging. Many of them are set up to serve industrial manufacturing, but many are also artist-friendly, or can be cajoled into experimenting. Either way, I guarantee you virtually none of them have worked with worbla, so these posts we’re making are sort of meant to show hey, this stuff is stable and safe to cut, and these are the best practices to save time.

Adding wefts to the front of one of Epic’s Phoebe wigs to get some crazy volume on a wig for a certain character.

I’m not going to start working on her in full until after Katsu probably but the ongoing joke has been “I am definitely not planning a Mercy costume and I would appreciate it if everyone could play along.”

I haven't sewn jack shit since all I've been watching is LCS (I'm a C9 fan. THANK GOD they beat Flash Wolves.) and working on this wig for new Tharja. It's my second wig, but I dumped a whole pack of dark purple arda wefts. It's thick but it tangles so fucking much. More layering to do
