As a sapphic I’ve always loved drag queens, and I feel like so many sapphics feel a kind of kinship with them. I think it’s because queer women and drag queens both understand that femininity and womanhood are a performance.

Queer women often express our femininity in ways that are “exaggerated” or “unusual”… like drag queens. To us “girl” is a costume we can put on and take off… like drag queens. Queer women love drag queens because they understand how so much of womanhood is just performance.

So many cishet women don’t understand how women can be queer in a feminine way. My cishet aunt once told me the only lesbians she can spot are butches, and she doesn’t understand how femininity can also “look gay”.

But to me it’s so obvious. The silly, abstract earrings. The exaggerated number of necklaces and rings. The big eyeliner. The attitude. It’s not just femininity, it’s DRAMATIC femininity. It’s almost like… drag.

Queer femininity is such a distinct thing. The best way I can describe it vs cishet is that queer femininity is EXTREMELY deliberate. And exaggerated. It’s almost like a caricature of a woman.

A cishet woman might throw on a necklace before a date. A queer woman will throw on 8 necklaces and wonder “is this enough?” A cishet woman might draw on a small winged eyeliner. A queer woman will pluck her eyebrows to make room for bigger eyeliner. A cishet woman’s earrings might be a cute stud, but a queer woman’s is something odd like a rubber duck or a knife.

Queer femininity is always looking to be bigger, more dramatic, and slightly STRANGER than cishet femininity. And isn’t that what drag is about at the end of the day?
