a quick word about tattoos

from someone who has a FUCK-METRIC-TON of them. i hear a lot of people hate on tattoos that don’t have a deeply sentimental meaning, but i have to say, most of mine don’t. and i don’t love them any less. the truth of the matter is that there are some tattoos you get to remind you of something, or commemorate something (and lawd knows i got some of those), but there are some tattoos that you get for “stupid” reasons. you get them because of a movie you love, an image you responded to, a drunken night you had. you get them to cover a scar or a part of your body that you don’t like. you get them for symmetry. you get them for temporary feelings, you get them because you just feel like it.

i will proudly admit to having acquired a few “stupid” tattoos: a severed head, a teapot, a mermaid, a bloody axe, etc. but when i call them “stupid”, it doesn’t mean that i have even a shred of regret about them.

the truth of the matter is that even the most seemingly pointless of tattoos is permanent, and as a result, acquires a level of meaning, even if it didn’t exist there before. reminds you of the summer you got it, or the laughs you got from your friends when they saw it, or how bad it hurt. could mean anything, doesn’t have to.

what i’m saying is that if there is no story preceding the tattoo, it writes one for itself. it becomes personal and important because it’s part of you. even if it’s silly or meaningless or strange.
