REFLECTION

I was intrigued by taking up communication design studies, to explore a different perspective in design. Aswell as opening myself up to new interesting techniques. As I have just finished school last year, studying two folios subjects were I had access to many resources and opportunities however was limited in exploring and learning new techniques, which is what fascinated me about this course in particular.

Having the objective to be opened up to new ideas and techniques as well as the way I wanted to look at design from a different perspective. I have been successful in the first semester of communication design to explore these objectives I set out for myself, for example the way I look at colour in design and the importance it has in the way it is formed and perceived by its audience. Especially in the GRAP2199 where I was opened up to historical movements throughout time and the different techniques inspired me. This subject in particular has taught me how to use my hands as a technique and make greater attention to detail. I also found some challenges within this course for example the most recent assignment ‘ask me anything’ with the frustration of not hearing back from the designers I contacted which gave me limited time to make the presentation how I wanted it to be from the beginning.

From GRAP2199’s lectures I was really drawn in by the Bauhaus movement as it uses creativity and manufacturing to unite together, using practical skills, crafts and techniques. However my favourite was learning about the Memphis movement, with its loud colours and zany patterns and its trendiness of making ordinary objects come to life, which really moved me aswell as inspired me greatly in my other subjects.

Next semester I would like to explore further on my techniques and to spend more time to the upcoming assignments to plan out and make mock ups of different concepts.

However, I have had an extremely positive start in the course and can’t wait to see whats ahead.

ASK ME ANYTHING // CONCLUDE

Oh how this assignment has been so much fun yet stressful at the same time. BEFORE i get into the GUTS of how i used my hands to make things, i’d just like to congratulate everyone for making it through these 12 weeks and how amazing everyone’s ask me anythings look. Im really blown away by how our cohort can produce so much creative work. M I N D B L O W N

ALRIGHT! 

So the The Marías are a band who formed in LA late 2016. The members include Maria, Josh, Carter, Jesse and Edward. Their unique style of music fits under the genre psychedelic-soul. I was introduced to them last year by a friend and fell inlove with their dreamy like composition. The reason why i decided to do a band instead of a Graphic Designer or Illustrator was because i realized that music plays a major part in my everyday life. The amount of music i consume some would say is unhealthy but i just find so much inspiration through what i listen. So when we were given the assignment of Ask me anything, The Marías was immediately on my list.

The creation of this small publication was probably the most fun ive had designing something. Since this task was driven on more interest in your artist rather then criteria, i knew this would be a great way to explore and really experiment with various medias. I started of searching my local thrift stores for items that could be of use. I happen to come across a few old books which had wonderful hard covers. I was lucky enough to find one that was red! This started the ideas flowing on how i could construct everything.

I had also found myself very interested in cassettes and cassette players. Growing up i never got to really experience the period where cassettes were booming. I found the concept of having physical music to be fascinating and oddly satisfying. Also i had no idea how tape worked so im pretty sure it was magic. Since The Marías had only one album out, (Superclean vol.1), I was determined to record it onto a cassette and find out how to do it. (with their permission ofcourse). After some research on how to record onto cassettes, i borrowed a old stereo player from a friend which enabled me to experiment with recording ontop of old cassettes from spotify. I experimented with different recording settings and Type 1 & 2 cassettes. After some frustration, i recorded the album onto a cassette and sliced the tape so it would only be the duration of their album. With 6 songs in their album, i split 3 and 3 and recorded them onto both side A & B. mmm quick math

The second medium i tried for the first time was Embroidery!!! After having difficulty finding a method to create a foil on my hardcover, i decided to give embroidery a try. With the help of a few youtube tutorials and Matilda’s wisdom, i recreated The Marías logo (which was already an embroidery but on a larger scale). and stuck it onto the front of my cover. Embroidery was alot of fun but it was definitely a risky pathway as it was my first and anything could have gone wrong. It also took a long time so a few ghibli films passed the time :’)

Designing the content within the booklet ran pretty smoothly. I knew i wanted to implement this psychedelic theme into the design aswell as their signature red. What was slightly stressful was the replies coming in 2 days before the deadline. It was another very risky gamble however it was all worth it. Since i had designed everything else, all i had to do was plonk the answers into the slots and rush to dinkums. Note to self, if ever creating another booklet, set up your documents as individual half pages instead of two pages on one piece of paper. Deciphering the correct order on what goes where is a nightmare. 

The whole concept of my project was that while you listened to the music, you would read through the booklet and create a connection between the two. I found that the experience of sitting infront of a stereo and having to listen through each song and then flip the cassette, a very warming and meaningful experience. I guess you cant really skip a song forcing you to listen to what the artist has to express. I shrink rapped everything together at the end to give the user (Andy and Karen lol) a real experience of something you would purchase from an artist. 

Overall it was SO MUCH FUN creating this and learnt so many new things from it. Id like to thank everyone who helped me with feedback and advice on making this and ofcourse, The Marías for giving me this opportunity and answering my questions.

Pee-wee’s Playhouse debuts. The spirit of the Memphis style (though not necessarily the philosophy) enters the mainstream. The movie Ruthless People, drenched in Memphis-inspired décor, comes out that year, too.

SHAREEN JOELS WORKS- ASK ME ANYTHING RESEARCH 

J RESIDENCE- first image 

We recently took the opportunity to re-style an original SJD project, that is originally known as F Residence. The family home is an original 1940s Art Deco house, but when re-styled, it took on a whole new identity, now known as J Residence.

Working with key furniture favourites, we stripped the family home back to bare basics, creating a palette that proves to be moody, with a subtle sophistication about it.

The conversion of a landmark restaurant on the banks of the Yarra into a prestigious dual-level function centre was realized by combining heritage materials, a tonal palette and meticulous detailing to convey contemporary luxury, framed by spectacular surrounding views. On the second level within the ‘Panorama’ room honed silver travertine and hand polished plaster

combine with walnut clad walls to create a more tonal, yet still minimal and sophisticated palette, with subtle brass strip detailing. The event space is completed with perforated plywood acoustic panelled ceilings and Italian feature lighting, purpose designed bespoke furnishings, and custom designed rugs.

Within a contemporary Melbourne home textures, sculptural forms, art and colour were layered over a palette of cool whites and concrete greys. This project is a story of high contrasts and strength of form.

Responding to the client’s love of entertaining the primary focus became the design and installation of a centralized entertainment room complete with a highly workable bar customized in blackened steel and black granite. Furniture designed and custom made by Shareen Joel Design.

NGV ‘BEST OF THE BEST’ TABLE DESIGN 4th

A collaboration for the NGV ‘Best of the Best’ between Shareen Joel and Tarryn Joyce (Joyce Architects). Referencing our passion for the industrial and machine age, in contrast with the romanticism and femininity of florals and fruits, our material selection includes scrap brass rods, steel and bronze with welded playground and outdoor fitness equipment components, softened

with elements of greenery and fruit. Our design is a modern take on the painterly tradition of still lifes, referencing the works of Caravaggio and other still life masters. The result is an industrial feminine composition.

DIOR MENS HOUSE IN PARIS 

Antonio Virga Architecte collaborated with Dior’s architecture department to renovate the creative space of Dior Homme – the menswear division of the fashion house. Situated on a triangular site between Rue de Marignan and the Impasse Bourdin passageway in Paris’ 8th Arrondissement, the building houses the offices and haute-couture workshops for Dior Homme.

Split over five levels and 1,500 square metres, the renovation brings a minimalist aesthetic that is continued throughout the building. Floor-to-ceiling glass panels encased in black powder coated steel frames line the L-shaped addition that is raised a few steps above the timber terrace. A large skylight with black diamond-patterned mullions disrupts the timber decking, providing an abundance of natural light to the floor below.

The ‘Dawn’ light series is a continuation of the ‘Voie’ collection first created for Copenhagen’s Etage Projects and is inspired by the time of day where sun, clouds and sky are united to display a riot of hues. The moment is captured with an installation of large light sculptures that utilise a single white neon tube embedded in cast resin, highlighting the manipulations of colour, light, transparency and saturation.

The result is an aesthetic wonder that creates magical moments and unexpected experiences within the materiality and manufacturing processes – the aspiration of the Sabine Marcelis studio.

Formed like a Fortress, La Muralla Roja is a modern interpretation of traditional Arab Mediterranean architecture. Inspired by the Mediterranean tradition of the casbah, Catalonian architect Ricardo Bofill’s labyrinthine building stands tall creating a vertical silhouette in the landscape.

The design corresponds to a precise geometric plan based on the typology of the Greek cross, with service towers, which contain kitchens and bathrooms at the point at which they intersect. The geometric design evokes a constructivist aesthetic, with “its labyrinth-like circulation, overlapping stairs, impossible balconies and endless series of patios.” Containing a total of 50 apartments, La Murala Roja departs from the traditional division between public and private space with its roof terraces, swimming pool, sauna and solaria, reserved for the residents’ use.

The external surfaces are painted in various tones of red, accentuating the contrast with the surrounding landscape. Vivid tones of blue cover stairs and circulation surfaces contrasting or blending with the sky, depending on the weather.

I was able to ask shareen questions about her inspiration over the years and what she is passionate about which is in my Ask me anything project.

MEMPHIS DESIGN  

The ’80s design movement known as Memphis has reemerged, inspiring Greenpoint ceramicists, Supreme collaborations, and an exhibit at the Met Breuer.

See those wormlike patterns on the ceramic vases sold at Dimes? That’s Memphis. The urgent impulse to outfit your office with a canary-yellow filing cabinet? You’ve got Memphis brain. Loud colors and zany patterns, once laughed off as one of many bad decisions made in the 1980s, have sneaked back into the Zeitgeist. All of a sudden, everyone from young Brooklyn artisans to the creative director at Valentino is riffing on a style invented in December 1980, when a group of like-minded designers gathered in a tiny Milan apartment one night and founded Memphis.

Now seen as an iconic and path-breaking Feminist artist, Wilke's work was first rejected by many critics, largely because of her conventional beauty. Her performances and photography are now seen as a crucial component of the Feminist movement in their use of the artist's own body in ways that addressed issues of female objectification, the male gaze, female agency, and even sexism within the feminist movement itself. Her challenge to traditional art practices and cultural assumptions puts her work squarely within postmodernism, while her fearless exploration of the female body keeps her relevant to this day.

week 7 lecture learning about Bauhaus

The Bauhaus was the most influential modernist art school of the 20th century, one whose approach to teaching, and understanding art's relationship to society and technology, had a major impact both in Europe and the United States long after it closed. It was shaped by the 19th and early-20th centuries trends such as Arts and Crafts movement, which had sought to level the distinction between fine and applied arts, and to reunite creativity and manufacturing. This is reflected in the romantic medievalism of the school's early years, in which it pictured itself as a kind of medieval crafts guild. But in the mid 1920s the medievalism gave way to a stress on uniting art and industrial design, and it was this which ultimately proved to be its most original and important achievement.
