Pakistani prisoner admitted to Chandigarh's PGIMER
Chandigarh: Pakistani prisoner Sanaullah, who was critically injured in an assault on him inside Jammu’s Kot Bhalwal jail, was brought here and admitted to the ICU of the Post-Graduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) Friday evening, hospital sources said.
The Pakistani prisoner, who is the Jammu jail for his role in terror activities, was flown from Jammu to Chandigarh in an air ambulance for treatment.
“He has been admitted to the ICU. His condition is critical and tests will be conducted on him,” a PGIMER source said.
Tight security arrangements were made in the wing where Sanaullah has been admitted.
Sanaullah was critically injured when he was attacked by a fellow prisoner, police in Jammu said Friday.
The attack came just a day after Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh died following brutal attack on him in a Lahore jail.
Sanaullah, a resident of Sialkot, was attacked by a former Indian Army soldier, convicted for murder, following an altercation Friday morning, a police officer said.
He received serious head injuries and was taken to the Government Medical College Hospital in Jammu, where doctors said he had slipped into a coma, much like Sarabjit Singh who was attacked in Lahore’s Kot Lakhpat Jail on April 26 and died Thursday.
Police said Sanaullah was being tried for murder since the late 1990s for carrying out acts of militancy in Jammu and Kashmir.

Sarabjit Singh dies in Lahore
Sarabjit Singh dies in Lahore. The condition of Indian death row prisoner Sarabjit Singh, who is in an intensive care unit in a Pakistan hospital was serious.
The information was given in a late night tweet posted by ministry spokesperson Syed Akbaruddin: “Sarabjit Singh’s medical situation remains ‘serious and critical’ as per update provided to Indian officials in Lahore at 10pm local time.”
Earlier in the day, Pakistan acceded to India’s request for daily consular access to Sarabjit Singh, who is under treatment in Lahore’s Jinnah Hospital after being brutally assaulted by fellow prisoners last week in the city’s Kot Lakhpat jail.
Sarabjit, 49, suffered critical head injuries in the unprovoked and sudden assault by four to five prisoners April 26. He has been on ventilator life support since.
India Wednesday made a fervent appeal to Pakistan to release Sarabjit Singh or at least to shift him to a third country for “proper treatment”.

'Bombay Talkies' - beguiling, befitting homage to Indian cinema (Movie Review - Rating: *****)
Film: “Bombay Talkies”; Cast: Rani Mukerji, Randeep Hooda, Saqib Saleem, Nawazuddin Siddiqui, Sadashiv Amrapurkar, Naman Jain, Khushi Dubey, Vineet Kumar Singh, Sudhir Pandey and Amitabh Bachchan; Directors: Karan Johar, Dibakar Bannerjee, Zoya Akhtar, and Anurag Kashyap; Rating: *****
A girl on a railway station who croons Lata Mangeshkar songs with aching luminosity, a stoic gluttonous ostrich, a flirty cocky gay entertainment journalist, a closet actor, a little boy who likes to dance like Katrina Kaif and a man from Allahabad who just wants to meet Amitabh Bachchan for a few seconds … Such are the engrossing characters that populate the unforgettable world of “Bombay Talkies”.
“Bombay Talkies” is that rarity, which makes us thankful for the gift of the movies.
Four stories directed by four contemporary Bollywood directors emerge and merge with seamless splendour into a pastiche of pain and pleasure. Like four scoops of ice cream, one yummier than the other, “Bombay Talkies” serves up a flavourful quartet of delights that leave us craving for more. It’s like that song written by the immortal Sahir Ludhianvi – “Abhi na jao chhod kar ke dil abhi bhara nahin”.
No, that song isn’t part of the film. But there are songs of the melody queen Lataji which haunt your senses as the restless edgy protagonists, each in search of an emotional liberation that strikes them in unexpected ways at the end of every story, seek a slice of cloudburst to nourish their parched spirits.
So on to the first and my favourite story directed by Karan Johar where a sterile marriage between an urban working-couple played by Rani Mukerji and Randeep Hooda is shaken by the arrival of young ebullient homosexual who enters their frozen marriage in a most unexpected way.
This story more than any other, pushes Indian cinema to the edge to explore a theme and emotions that have so far been swept under the carpet. Karan, whose most brilliant film “My Name Is Khan”, was also about a marginalised community, strips the urban relationship of all its shock value. He looks at the three characters’ frightening spiritual emptiness with a dispassion that was denied to the characters in his earlier exploration of crumbling marital values in “Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna”.
Thanks to the unsparing editing by Deepa Bhatia, a gently arousing background score by Hitesh Sonik, deft but credible dialogues penned by Niranjan Iyenger and camerawork by Anil Mehta that sweeps gently across three wounded lives, Karan is able to nail the poignancy and the irony of his urban fable in just four-five key scenes. This is his best work to date. Rani delivers another power-packed performance. It’s Saqib Saleem who steals this segment with his unmitigated spontaneity and reined-in ebullience.
The second story by Dibakar Bannerjee features that wonderful chameleon actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui as a man who would have been an actor if only life’s drudgeries had not overtaken his life. Dibakar is a master-creator of vignettes from everyday life. Here his detailing of chawl life is unerring.
Nikos Andritsakis’s cinematography doesn’t miss a single nuance in Nawaz’s sad yet hopeful, bleak yet bright existence. The sequence where Siddiqui washes clothes with the chawl’s women is savagely funny and poignant, as is his life-changing moment when Nawaz gets to perform one shot with Ranbir Kapoor. No we don’t see Ranbir, we just feel his presence, and we also hear filmmaker Reema Kagti giving orders from the directorial chair, but we don’t see her either.
Nawaz in Dibakar’s deft hands, takes his character through a journey of profoundly saddening self-discovery without any hint of self-pity. This segment is quirky funny and tragic. No one is allowed to feel sorry for Nawaz’s character. Not even Nawaz.
Ebullient and enchanting are the descriptions that come to mind while watching Zoya Akhtar’s film about a little boy (Naman Jain, brilliant) who would rather dance to Katrina Kaif’s song than become a cricketer or a pilot, as per the wishes of his tyrant papa (Ranveer Shorey).
The household brims over with song, dance and giggles between the Katrina-enamoured boy and his sibling and confidante (a very confident Khushi Dubey). Charming warm humorous and vivacious Zoya’s film serves up a very gentle moral lesson. Let a child grow the way it wants to. Zoya’s film makes our hearts acquire wings. And yes, it immortalises Katrina Kaif.
Finally, Anurag Kashyap’s homage to the unmatchable stardom of Amitabh Bachchan. A simple fable of a man journeying from Allahabad to meet Bachchan, this segment is more baggy and loose-limbed than the other three tightly-edited stories. This is not to take away from its power. As played by Vineet Kumar Singh, the Common Man’s devotion to the Bachchan aura is manifested in the tongue-in-cheek spoken lines and the casual energy of Mumbai’s street life.
Anurag captures the sometimes-funny often-sad bustle around the Bachchan bungalow with warmth and affection. The segment certainly doesn’t lack in warmth. But it could have done with a tighter grip over the narrative.
“Bombay Talkies” is segmented and layered, yet cohesive and compelling from the first frame to the last. While unravelling the magic of cinema and its impact on the minds of audiences, “Bombay Talkies” also displays how much cinema has evolved over the generations.
This is a beguiling, beautiful and befitting homage to 100 years of Indian cinema. It’s also proof that different stories in an episodic film could comfortably have directors with different sensitivities staring in the same line of vision.
If you watch only one film a year make sure it’s this one.
Yup, thank god for the motion picture.

Complete ban imposed on outside items in Punjab Prisons: Phillaur
Chandigarh: In order to ensure full security in the Punjab prisons, the Punjab government has imposed complete ban on the eatables and other items brought by the visitors for the prisoners from outside during the meetings.
This was stated here today by Sarwan Singh Phillaur, Jail Minister Punjab while presiding over a high level meeting of the senior officers, jail superintendents of sensitive jails and doctors posted in Punjab jails. At the same time the Minister has directed the jail authorities to make available every essential item for the inmates in the canteens within the jail premises. The Superintendent jail would be held responsible if any objectionable material is found supplied from outside.
The Punjab government, in order to check the overcrowding of prisoners in the state, would set up ultra modern jails especially in the state. Besides this the design and plan for three ultra-modern high security new jails at Amritsar, Bathinda and Muktsar to be constructed at a total cost of about Rs. 450 crore within two years. The new jails coming up would be equipped with CCTV cameras, Mobile Jammers, bio-security systems and other security equipment to ensure adequate security in Jails. The Minister has directed the officers to intensify their efforts to check the smuggling of drugs and cell phones and other prohibited items reportedly used by the prisoners in the jails. He has also asked them to follow the jail manual in both letter and spirit particularly when meetings are allowed. Any laxity on the part of the officers concerned would not be tolerated, he said.
Expressing concern over the problems being faced by the prison staff in handling the nexus between the drug peddlers and the prisoners in the jails, the Minister said that the department was fully geared up to break this nexus and the superintendents of jails would be empowered to search the prisons and conduct criminal proceeding under NDPC Act. The Minister has asked the officers to conduct extensive fearless search operations in Punjab prisons with a view to nabbing the objectionable material posing security threat from the jail inmates. The officers confiscating maximum of such things from the prisoners would be honored by the state government, said the Minister.

29 years on, Sajjan Kumar acquitted in 1984 riots case
New Delhi: A Delhi court Tuesday acquitted Congress leader Sajjan Kumar in a case related to the 1984 anti-Sikh riots. As anguished protests broke out among gathered crowds, an angry man hurled a shoe at the judge inside the courtroom.
Sajjan Kumar’s acquittal came almost three decades after an estimated 3,000 Sikhs were killed in three days of riots in India’s capital and elsewhere.
District Judge J.R. Aryan convicted the other five accused in the case related to the killing of five people in Delhi Cantonment area during violence against the Sikhs following the assassination of then prime minister Indira Gandhi on Oct 31, 1984.
As protests erupted among crowds outside the Karkardooma court complex, All India Sikh Federation president Karnail Singh Peer Mohammad flung a shoe at the judge.
“He (Mohammad) never intended to hit the judge but he wanted to show his resentment towards the judicial system which has failed to give justice to the Sikhs. He is in police custody,” Mohammad’s lawyer told reporters.
The court acquitted Sajjan Kumar but convicted five other accused for rioting, being armed with deadly weapons and murder.
The Congress leader was facing trial along with Balwan Khokkar, Mahender Yadav, Girdhari Lal, Kishan Khokkar and Captain Bhagmal for allegedly conspiring and inciting a mob against the Sikh community.
Accused Kishan Khokkar, and Mahender Yadav were charged under section 147 (rioting) and section 148 (rioting, armed with deadly weapon), while the other accused Balwan Khokkar, Girdhari Lal and Captain Bhagmal were charged under sections 147, 148, and 302 (murder).
The case against Sajjan Kumar was registered in 2005 on a recommendation of the Justice G.T. Nanavati Commission which inquired into the riots.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had filed two charge sheets against Sajjan Kumar and others in January 2010.
The present case deals with the death of five Sikhs – Kehar Singh, Gurpreet Singh, Raghuvender Singh, Narender Pal Singh and Kuldeep Singh – who were members of the same family and were killed by the mob in Delhi Cantonment’s Raj Nagar area.
Kehar and Gurpreet were the husband and son respectively of complainant and eye-witness Jagdish Kaur.
Raghuvender, Narender and Kuldeep were her brothers.
The order led to furore amongst members of the Sikh community, camped outside the court complex since early morning, who were hopeful that the Congress leader would be brought to justice.
Slogans like “shame shame” against the Congress were heard and some people tried to climb over barricades and storm the court complex.
A ruckus ensued inside the courtroom too when the judge acquitted Sajjan Kumar and the victims’ family refused to vacate the court room.
“I would not leave this court till the prime accused Sajjan Kumar is convicted for murder. He should get death penalty. Hang him, otherwise I will die here,” shouted Jagdish Kaur.
Many women were seen crying openly.
“Congress is a party of murderers. Though we respect court, we are sad with this judgment. We never thought that he will be acquitted,” said a woman protester.
“Is this what we have waited for in the past 29 years? They killed so many people and are let off the hook. Sikhs have always been discriminated against in this country,” said another protestor.
“Our hopes have been shattered. We thought like Tytler, the court will take a serious view against Sajjan Kumar,” she said.
On April 10, a Delhi Court ordered the reopening of a case against another Congress leader, Jagdish Tytler, in the 1984 anti-Sikh riots.
Tytler is accused of instigating a mob that led to the murder of three men who had taken shelter at the Pul Bangash Gurdwara in north Delhi on Nov 1, 1984.

New Post has been published on http://news.saanj.net/entertainment-news/iron-man-3-slick-and-enjoyable-ians-movie-review-rating/
'Iron Man 3' slick and enjoyable (Movie Review - Rating: ***)
Film: “Iron Man 3″; Cast: Robert Downey Jr., Ben Kingsley, Guy Pearce, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rebecca Hall, Don Cheadle, Paul Bettany (voice), Jon Favreau, Ty Simpkins; Director: Shane Black; Rating: ***
With characters culled from Marvel Comics, we know for sure that “Iron Man 3″ would be packed with spectacular action and nice razor sharp, witty lines. When, the film begins with a voice-over which states – “A famous man once said, we create our own demons. Never mind who the famous man is.” – we are all the more confident about the same.
The voice-over at the very onset sets the tenor of the film.
The first scene ushers in a New Year’s party in Bern, Switzerland, heralding the new millennium where a businessman-cum-genius inventor-cum mechanic Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) is partying hard. The audience waits with baited breath to understand how he creates his own demons.
“Iron Man 3″ is the Superhero’s journey of finding the demons he created and destroying them.
Flash forward to the present day, following the attacks on New York where a new terrorist, Mandarin (Ben Kingsley), is threatening to bring down the US government. Tony is mentally fatigued. He is worn out with confidence and anxiety issues. This causes a strain on his relationship with Pepper Potts (Gwyneth Paltrow).
He is unable to sleep and so he spends all his time developing a super cloak – The metallic shield that can protect him.
Created through advance mechanics, it assembles itself around him and works on mental remote. Thus making him the formidable – Iron Man.
Meanwhile, a good looking bio-tech researcher and geneticist Aldrich Killian (Guy Pearce), who has a grouse against Tony, teams up with Mandarin. So it is super-villains versus Iron Man.
With his back against the wall, Tony has to survive by his own devices, relying on his creativity and instincts to protect himself and those close to him. He has also to juggle a tense relationship with his old buddy James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) and beautiful ex-girlfriend Maya (Rebecca Hall).
Along the way, Stark discovers the answer to the question that has secretly haunted him – does the man make the suit or does the suit make the man?
The actions set along with the stunts are breathtakingly spectacular. The mid-air rescue operation as well as the Iron Man’s suits either flying or fighting is a visual treat.
The cinematography along with the computer generated images merge seamlessly into frames making the entire watching experience amazing. The costumes as well as the production designs are visually remarkable.
Jam-packed with humour and gags, there is no emotional connect with the characters. During the course of the narration, director Shane Black and his co-writer Drew Pearce have meandered from the graphic novel into subplots merging the sensibilities of the eighties and early nineties, thus making everything odd in the character’s history.
This is very evident in the scene where a de-motivated and lonely Tony traces The Mandarin to a small town. Here he is aided by a cute, cocky but troubled kid called Harley (Ty Simpkins), who misses his father. This relationship throws up a lot of witty one-liners, but the whole subplot seems incongruous.
Another subplot is that of Tony and his colleague James, where both of them spend time buddy cop style!
Every character in “Iron Man 3″ is important and the actors deliver credible performances. Downey uses his offbeat persona to good effect, adding blunt honesty to Tony’s character to help make the film more approachable.
Ben adds a comic dimension to this Chinese looking Osama-bin-Laden-esque villain. While Gwyneth and Rebecca have nothing much to display, Guy nails his character to the T. But it is Ty Simpkins as Harley the smart kid who surpasses expectations with a mature performance as a friend and ally to Tony and lays the foundation for the next sequel.
With a captivating finale, “Iron Man 3″ is a slick, inspired fantasy-adventure film that almost anyone can enjoy. Let’s pray for the next edition to come soon.
