Flowers and teddy bear shaped hearts
Sabo let out a breathy sigh as he looked out across the street towards the Bakery his childhood friend owned. âTeddy bear pastriesâ was such a Koala thing to name her bakery.
He almost jolted, falling back in his chair as it tipped dangerously low to the floor when he heard the door of his floral shop slam right open as the girl he had been thinking about stormed in, the door shut right when she stood up to the front. âSabo!â She exclaimed, her hands slamming on the counter and a pout on her lips which he couldn't help but be drawn. Her voice raised suddenly, "are you even listening??" Without realizing it, he'd been so distracted by her that he hadn't heard what she had started saying. âSorry sorry, what?â Sabo offered to raise his hands in his defense. âYou forgot you promised to come and try the new snacks on the menu at the bakery, you big jerk!â
His blue eyes widened and he could feel the sweat on the back of his neck. Ah, crap, he really had forgotten about that: he had been so busy helping Ace at his firework stand it slipped his mind.
âI am so sorry Koala, let me make it up to you,â he said with a nervous smile on his face, anticipating her to hit him. She put her finger to her lip, thinking it over âOkay, then you will come by after your shift, got it?!â Donât you dare forget this time. I mean it, Sabo!â. âI wouldn't dare to miss it, swear on my flower shop,â he said with a laugh before he gasped. âStay right there, Koala!â
She could only stare when he jumped up from his stool, which fell to the ground with a loud clunk as he ran into the backroom. What on earth was he even doing right now? Koala never could figure out what was going on in that thick skull head of his.
She jolted hearing loud crashes from the back room. She winced that sounded painful almost âEr⌠Sabo, are you alright?â she called out, peaking over the counter with a nervous expression on her face. âHold on!â he called out with more loud bangs echoing in the room.
The door finally slammed open as he ran out with his hands behind his back with a charming grin on his face. âThis better not be like the whoopie pie,â she said. âNope, it's even better!â He said, pulling out a bouquet behind his back, pushing the pink peonies, the red roses and the pink tulips in her hands.
Her eyes widened as she looked down at them, hiding her face in them to cover up the vibrant pink hue across her round cheeks. âDo you like them?â he asked with a chuckle. âThey're beautiful, Thank you!â she stammered out. Why would he give her flowers? Did he like her the same way she did to him?
Sabo rubbed the back of his blonde hair. âI just thought they suited you, thatâs all. And I know how you always are whining. I never give you flowers for the bakery.â
She blinked when he had actually been listening to her when she was upset with him for giving flowers to literally everyone else but her. She moved her hand touching the petals before she brought the bundle up to her nose and she inhaled the sweet scent of the flowers.
âI love them, Sabo. They smell wonderful, I'll put them in the shop when I leave here.â She whispered to herself as she held the flowers close to her chest and eyed him with eyes full of affection and longing.
He reached across the counter and cupped her cheek up âGood, a beautiful girl needs beautiful flowers.â
She almost dropped the flowers in her hands to cover her face. Thankfully she had a good grip as she tried to hide behind the flowers âStop saying stuff like that before I think you're trying to hit on me or something,â she called out from the flowers.
âAnd what if I am?â He blurted out before his whole face went into a flame, just like the fires his brother fought.
Oh god, had he really just said that out loud even worse. That was not how he wanted to tell her he was trying to ask her out in the first place! He almost face palmed why he was such an idiot. Koala peeked up from the flowers. All he could see was those round brown eyes of hers. They always reminded him of honey if he was honest. âAre you hitting on me?â she managed to squeak out. He almost wanted to laugh or scream âAh yes, I have been for years but you never noticeâŚâ He mumbled with a shy smile on his face and he let out an awkward cough. Well, since this was out in the open, he might as well take his shot. He grabbed both of her hands with his âKoala, will you go on a date with me? You're welcome to slap me if you donât feel the same way and I overstepped.â
She let out a loud gasp gripping his hands. He liked her back?! âWhy didn't you say anything earlier, you dummy?! I've liked you since junior high, how could you be so dense and never notice it?â She questioned him on his own stupidity: it was almost astounding. â I didnât hear a no from you,â he announced before he looked at her nervously, knowing he hated it when she was quiet like this: it always scared him he was either in a lot of trouble or she was going to cry. âYes, Iâll go on a date with you, you big oaf.â she said with a smile curling on her lips. He leapt over the counter and wrapped his arms around her waistâ Really?! Youâll go on one with me! It will be the best date youâve ever gone on in history! Iâm a man of my wordâ.
~~~
Koala tapped her fingers nervously on the bar counter of the bakery. She looked down at the basket, where a koala bear made out of bread was wrapped in plastic with a red ribbon: she had made this a thousand times so why was she so nervous about this? This time was no different, other than the fact she and Sabo were going on a date today. It still felt like a dream she could hardly believe.
Koala threw the basket up in the air when the door opened and a loud ching-ching sound filled her shop. She caught the basket and held it to her chest. She let out a sigh of relief.
It was now or never since she had already planned to confess to Sabo with this basket tomorrow. But he had asked her out already, so she turned on her heel and walked toward him shoving the basket into his chest. âH-here take it!â
Sabo stumbled back, barely catching himself from the force she pushed in his chest. His eyes glanced down. As he looked at the sand colored koala bear.with what looked like editable chocolate for the eyes., how cute âthis is really adorable, was this the new item you wanted me to try the other day?â
Koala felt her face burning nice and hot. âJ-just try it already! You were begging me for bread.â Sabo raised his hands as a small sly smile crossed his lips. âHow can I possibly say no to thatâ. He jested at her before he opened the package. He took a bite out of the koala-shaped bread.âOh wow, this is really good! Is this strawberry filling?â He asked with a grin. âY-yeah, I remember you said I needed more stuff with strawberries that aren't sold out.â
Sabo moved his fingers and brought up a piece to her lips. âHere you have a bite too. I would feel guilty if I am the only one eating.â
She could feel herself staring. Has Sabo always had such a sweet smile?âO-okay, I will. But what do you have planned for our date? if you still wanted to goâŚâ
â Huh? Of course I still want to go, sillyâ He assured, poking her forehead the same way he always did when she had self-doubt. She moved her hands up, touching her forehead âYou never said what we are doing.â
Sabo cocked his head to the side before he cupped her cheek up. âHey donât worry. I promise you this will be an amazing date weâre going to that amusement park youâve been begging me to go with for weeks now.â Koalaâs brown eyes went wide. âWill you really want to take me there? I thought you couldnât afford to go.â He rubbed the back of his blonde hair âAh, about that, truthfully I lied. I was saving up for it, so I could ask you to go with me. I didn't want to go with Ace or Luffy, I wanted to go with you.â
Koala blinked at the man who would drop anything to go see his brothers and actually waited just for her to go together. She felt the tears welling up for a moment before she let out a laugh as she wiped them. âYouâre such a dork,â she said between laughs. âWhat can I say? I am a man of my word. I did promise I would take you some day, I got us the VIP tickets so we donât have to wait in lines.â
â You thought of everything, didn't you? I donât think I have ever seen you put so much thought into something before.â Sabo blinked, borderline offended. âHey! whatâs that supposed to mean?â âYou act first rather than think it over, you know,â Koala said with a raised eyebrow. âWell, I canât really be mad, you got me there. But come on, we should go missing daylight. I know for a fact you're going to get scared on the roller coasters."
Koala gasped âI am not! If anyone is going to get scared it will be you!You cried when we watched that horror movie together and stayed at my apartment,â she reminded him, puffing her cheeks out and pouting.
Sabo had to take a moment to compose himself, she was just way too cute when she pouted like that. âHaha you're right, I did but so did you.â He mused out loud before he put an arm around her shoulder, bringing Koala closer to him as he led her out of her shop and turned the open sign to closed after they shut the door.
It felt nice like this: just the two of them, walking together. When he had met Koala all those years ago he never really pictured them being as close as they were. Much less going on their first date together:there had been times in both of their lives they could have met and fallen for someone else but that never really happened. Maybe they were always meant to be together, like it was the universeâs way of telling them.
But for now, Sabo wouldnât worry too much about that, he had too much to worry about such as thinking of how to make her feel nothing but happy on this date.
flower crowns
Sabo, you do know we are on a mission, right?â the brown hair girl questioned as she stared down at him on the ground. âCome on, donât be that way, Koala. Just sit down and have fun!â. He said with a giant smile crossing his lips, staring up at her from his spot amongst the blue and orange flowers under his body.
Her brown brows furrowed as she crossed her arms.âWe have work to do, thatâs the whole reason we are out here in the first place,â she said, sounding exasperated with the man. She leaned down closer to their faces, so close to each other yet so far away.
âCome on Sabo, we do not have time for thisââ she tried to say, only to let out a loud âOOFâ as Sabo grabbed her wrist, yanking her right into his lap, his arms around her waist and his chin on her shoulder.
âDonât be like that, mh? Maybe you're jealous that I'm paying attention to the flowers more than you?â She sat there wide-eyed, feeling the back of her neck and her ears growing hot as the blush dusted across her cheeks. He put a finger to his lips âYou know, what if we made flower crowns? I know you have always wanted to make one. Could it be our thing?â he suggested with that dumb cheerful voice of his.
Koala let out a sigh of defeat: she knew she had to admit she lost the game with that stubborn man. âFine. But we canât stay here too long, you knowâ. She said, turning around and pinching his round cheeks. âUh-huh, you say so, but you had made no move to get out of my lap,â he teased the poor brown-haired woman.
He moved his large hands and placed a bunch of orange butterfly weeds and a bundle of blue bluebells in her much smaller and cute hand âLetâs use these, Koala!â He suggested to her before her brown eyes glanced down at the bundle. â Hey Sabo, do you know what these flowers mean?â she asked him, her face feeling hot. She knew that Sabo knew those flowers and what they meant, but so did she.
âNope, not a clue. Why donât you tell me?â He asked in a light but teasing manner, the same he always does when he already knows the answer to the question he asked.
Part of her was certain that he just liked to hear her talk. She let out a heavy sigh, tilting her head back to look up at him from her position.
âButterfly weeds are supposed to represent joy, while it is said that Bluebells are the flowers of undying loveâ. She could hardly get out with how much she was stammering from her own embarrassment, it was just a coincidence that these were the flowers he had grabbed.
He queried with a blonde brow âOh really? Had no idea but I think it fits us. Butterfly weed makes me think of you, it almost matches your hair,â He said as he took a strand of her brown hair and brought it up to his lips, leaving a kiss on the lock between his fingers.
Koala stared up at him with wide eyes. Did he like her? Her brain could not wrap around the thought of the very idea that stubborn idiotic Sabo liked her the same way she loved him. It almost felt as if her heart was about to physically burst out of her chest at that exact moment. She could not handle another act like this or she would lose it or, even worse, do something embarrassing again (like the last time she had tried to confess to him, but she ended up telling him âHappy Mondayâ).
She was interrupted by her thoughts as she felt his finger pinching her cheek. âEarth to Koala, where did you go?â He cooed in her ear, only to jolt when she flung her arm in surprise and hit him on his cheek.
She sulked seeing the red mark on his face and waved her arms frantically âI am so so sorry Sabo, I swear it wasnât on purpose! I must have spaced out and then you scared me so I just actedââ
Sabo let out a laugh before he grabbed her waving hands âHey careful, youâll mess up the flowers there. But if youâre really sorry then⌠how about kissing me?â
She and Sabo had locked eyes in complete silence for what felt like a solid hour before he puckered his lips.
âCome on, you hit me hard!â he baited, only to find himself blinking when she leaned forward and kissed him on the cheek.
Well, that really was his fault, wasn't it? He never directly said where she could kiss him. But she was so cute he just wanted to grab her face and kiss her. Saboâs lips curled up into one of his sunshine smiles, but Koala could not raise her eyes to look up at him. She was almost glad she was sitting in his lap like this, mostly because it was harder to turn around and look at him.
âI thought we were making flower crowns?â âWe are, I'm gonna show you how right now. You have your flowers, right?â Sabo placed his own flowers next to the ground beside him, his fingers brushing over the flowers in her hands. âFirst, we are going to braid the flowers like this,â he explained, showing her how to twist and braid the vines of the flowers together. Koala watched as her hands tried to copy his movements.
Sabo was really good at everything he did, sometimes it felt like everything came so easy to him. But what she did not know was that he forced Betty and Ivankov to teach him for months: there were times it almost felt like he would never be able to do it, he even went as far as to practice in his spare time on missions.
Koala let out a groan of frustration as another one of her vines tore and snapped the crown she was making. âThis is not fair, how are you so good at this? I'm never gonna get this Sabo, this is the fourth time!â She said dejectedly as she hung her head down. Sabo could have sworn he saw little rain clouds floating over her. âHey now, donât be like that, you'll get it. I had to have others teach me. Here, just follow me once more, okay? It does not need to be perfect at all.â â...I guess you are right for once.â
He rolled his eyes despite the laugh that left his lips. He held her hands once more this time moving her fingers, helping her braid the vines. Koalaâs brown eyes widened seeing how they weaved into the tight braids Sabo was showing her. After a couple of long moments, Sabo smiled widely âAhah! There we go, all doneâ.
He held out the lovely flower crown gleaming under the sunlight: the lovely Bluebells and the orange butterfly weeds just made them seem all the more enchanting as he placed the crown on the top of her head.
He sucked in a sharp breath, his face glowing alight. She was beautiful, how had he really never noticed before was beyond him. His lower lip trembling âSabo, are you okay? Youâre shakingâŚâ Koala asked with worry in those big doe brown eyes of hers.
âH-huh. Sorry, I got lost in my thoughtsâ, He said, his voice having a little edge of nervousness to it. She quirked a brow since when did Sabo get lost in his own head? He was the type to act first and think later more than often. âYou big liar, what terrible scheme are you brewing now.â âWhy do I have to be scheming anything?! Canât I just enjoy spending time with my best friend?â He asked with a tone of amusement laced in his words.
Koala narrowed her eyes âThat makes me trust you even less. Just spit it out, Sabo, it canât be that bad.â Sure how was he supposed to blurt out that he finally saw her as a girl he had never really considered one? He was so sure she would freak out on him but, if he really had to pinpoint when this started, it would have to be on the last job they did together, where they had to pose as a married couple.
Sabo was never one to think of marriage, he really didnât care about relationships nor did he have the time to partake. But with Koala, part of him wanting to see her in a pretty white dress⌠the idea became more and more stuck in his head.
He was pulled out of his fantasy by Koala pulling on his cheeks âHey, I am talking to you! First, you drag me out here while we are working and now you're ignoring me. What is the matter with you ?!â âLetâs get married!â He blurted out, giving the poor woman whiplash from how fast she whipped her head around to face him. âWHAT?!â she exclaimed with wide-darting eyes, feeling like the wind was knocked right out of her chest. Her face resembled one of those ripe cherry tomatoes that they had growing on the base.
Sabo at this point just about was ready to surrender himself to the navy rather than deal with trying to come back from what he just said out loud. He rubbed the black of his golden locks âAh, did I say that out loud?â He asked with the hope he really had not. âYou did and you have not explained yourself!â
He gulped with a nervous expression as he could feel the sweat on his forehead. Well, crap, he would just have to bite the bullet, wouldnât he?
Sabo turned his body so he was facing her before he grabbed her round face, which made her stare and let out a sound as he leaned closer. A sound of surprise, when his soft lips pressed on her own smaller ones.
Koala felt like the wind had knocked out of her body once more. She moved her hands, gripping his shoulders. The kiss felt so right and something out of a fairytale. Her body felt so light as if she was dreaming the whole thing up. If you had told her four days ago when she left with Sabo that he would have kissed her, she would obviously have laughed it off.
When he pulled away and the air came back to her lungs, she turned a scarlet color âS-Sabo! What was that?!â A cheeky smile crossed that handsome face of his âWell Koala, that was a kiss. I did not realize you didn't know what that was.â â Now is not the time to get smart, Sabo,â she cried out with tears threatening to bubble up. There was no way Sabo really liked her, he was playing a cruel joke on her!
Upon seeing her tears, he jolted âH-hey, did you hate it that much?â âItâs cruel to play with a girlâs feelings, you know? You're being a jerk!â She said as the tears rolled down her round cheeks. Sabo moved his hands, his thumbs wiping her tears away â I should have made myself clear Koala. I am not pulling a prank, I am in love with you. I have always been since we met.â
Koala kept getting whiplash at his words âW-what⌠Why, there are so many girls who are in love with you, Sabo. So tell me, why me?!â âWhy you? Why not you Koala, I donât want anyone but you.â Her lower lip trembled as she gulped âYou really feel that way?â âOf course I do, haven't ever said anything I don't mean Koala. You are the most beautiful girl I know, inside and out.â â Why have you never said anything until now?â
Sabo let out a laugh âI tried, but you kept misunderstanding me. Still, you haven't answered me either, do you like me?â She placed her hands over the top of his warm calloused ones. âI doâŚI love you, I thought you didnât like me.â His blue eyes widened before he softened. âThen⌠After this job, letâs go on a date, mhm?â âSounds like a plan, be on time for once.â âI wouldn't dream of being late.â
