Rhys was last minute shopping, as per usual, for his family for Christmas. At the moment he was trying to decide on what to buy for Cole when he spotted a familiar face. Picking up the pair of fuzzy slippers and jumper he was currently trying to decide between, he decided to approach her. “Hey stranger.” He said, holding both items up. “Okay, so from a female point  of view; which one of these do you thing would make the best  Christmas present for a 27 year old?” 

Having just come off duty downtown, Sabrina decided to stick around for a while before going back to her apartment. That sticking around led to wandering and the wandering led to poking around in a few different stores. She was in her third store when a familiar voice piped up. Looking up the blonde saw Rhys and smiled. “Hey, long time no see.” The officer joked slightly before focusing in on the the question. Looking over both items, her tongue slipped out of her mouth just the littlest bit. It was a reflex that happened when she was thinking very hard. “I think the sweater? But you could go with both to be safe, assuming they’re for Cole?”

She nodded while she smiled. “Right. The perks of having siblings, right? You don’t have to do both.” She definitely knew that feeling with her parents and siblings from time to time. She was definitely the one who got their mom the most, but she loved it. She moved back to the ice and skated with her. “I’m… okay, I guess. Struggling a little. Just one I think the nightmares are calm, a really bad one hits me.” She shrugged. “So I haven’t slept too much. What about you, though?” 

“Precisely.” Sabrina smirked, nodding in agreement. Her face fell slightly as Dom went on to describe what she was dealing with. The blonde wished nightmares were the kind of problem you could just punch in the face and make go away but unfortunately they both knew it was more complicated than that. Still, seeing someone she cared about struggle in any way was never easy for the officer. “Well, if you’re ever awake and you need someone to talk to you known you can always call me, right?” The blonde asked, raising an eyebrow an offering a small smile. She wasn’t a great sleeper either but for different reasons. “I’m alright, just sort of coasting at the moment. Really just have work going on and that’s it.” Not that Sabrina minded, she was good at her job and found it very satisfying which was more than many people could say.

While most Christmas related things made her antsy, ice skating was one of the few things she enjoyed and she tried her best to ignore the decorations and anything else that got her anxious. Ivey was doing something a little more Christmasy with her grandparents and if it wasn’t being out there with Sabrina, Dominique probably wouldn’t be out there at all. She was focusing on skating when she saw her friend stopped and she moved over to her and smiled. “Don’t worry. I definitely understand.” She laughed softly. “Everything okay?” 

Sabrina nodded in confirmation. “Yeah, yeah he just messed up Netflix somehow and my mom isn’t home. She’s helping out with a toy drive all day. And my sister’s there with her. So I pulled dad-duty.” The blonde chuckled. In all honestly she didn’t mind, her dad had been her first best friend and still was so anything he needed was something Sabrina was willing to try and help with. “Okay! Back to the ice.” The officer determined, getting back up and carefully onto the rink. They skated at a leisurely pace, just fast enough to keep moving but slowly enough that conversation wasn’t interrupted. “How are you doing? I know Christmas can be difficult.”

Location: Arctic Skate Outdoor Rink

After multiple laps, Sabrina felt a vibration in her pocket and headed over to the side of the rink to sit for a second and check to see if it had been anything important. It was her dad, he’d accidentally locked himself out of netflix again and needed help resetting the password so he could watch holiday movies. The blonde chuckled to herself and typed out a response. She would stop by her parents before heading home to sort out the issue hopefully he could survive until then. Seeing a shadow fall across the space in front of her, the officer glanced up to see Dom. “Hey, sorry I disappeared. My dad was having a tech emergency, you know how that goes.”

Xavier had been having a good week as the year almost entered its final month. It was always a time for him to set updated goals and intentions and especially now that he had a new sense of purpose. Stepping out from the B&B after visiting a friend from out of town, he stood to think about where to head now. Most of the day remained and he didn’t want to go back to his apartment just yet. It wasn’t until he caught sight of Sabrina across the way, “Hey,” he greeted going towards her. “Long time stranger!” he joked. 

During her lunch break, Sabrina had decided to go for a quick walk and stretch her legs. While it was good no serious crimes had had her running all over town, being stuck behind a desk doing paperwork did make her feel a bit restless every now and then. She was about to cross the street when a familiar voice caught her attention. The blonde turned and waved slightly in response as Xavier closed the gap between them to stand beside her. “Hey Xav, sorry. You know me, working too much as usual.” She smiled, giving him a quick friendly hug before pulling back slightly. “How are you?”

 Rhys smiled back at the blonde. “Yes, no she truly is terrific.” He stated, proud of his sister and what she had accomplished in her time after school and since her fiance passed away. He nodded his head at her suggestion. “Sure - Why  not?” He smiled, he was going to eat anyway, so why not with some company. Especially seeing they were technically neighbours. “Do you have any spot or place in particular you’d like to eat at?” 

 “She seems it.” Sabrina confirmed with a smile, based on her gut feeling the girl had struck her as being a good person. There was a moment between her offering the invitation and his acceptance where the blonde worried she’d made an awkward social mistake. But she was able to breathe a small sigh of relief when Rhys agreed. Despite the fact her work involved talking to people and building a rapport, outside of the office she found it a bit difficult to connect with new people most of the time. Thankfully he was making it feel easy with kindness and patience. “Here’s good for me, the line’s died down so I think we can order pretty quickly and find a seat.” Sabrina noted, glancing at the benches nearby.

 Rhys grinned widely at the mention of his sisters name. “Yeah, Cole!” He confirmed. “Do you know her?” He figured most people would, or at least they probably knew who she was at this point. It was hard not to stand out with an accent in a small town like this. “Oh don’t worry. Better to be safe than sorry in some cases.” He told her with a small shrug. “Sabrina, right.” He noted, “I am Rhys, and I believe we might be neighbours.” 

Sabrina nodded in confirmation, unable to help but smile back seeing his enthusiasm about his sister. “Yeah, yeah. I mean not super well but professionally, she seems excellent at her work which is something I really admire.” The blonde noted before finally extending her hand as he formally introduced himself. “I believe you might be correct.” The officer chuckled softly, glancing around. “Do you want to eat together? I have a little time before I have to head back to FPD.” It was common that Sabrina made the first move in social situations but her gut suggested Rhys was genuinely nice and she didn’t exactly have a reason not to try with new people.

Chills. Those would’ve run up Dylan’s body when he saw Sabrina’s death glare if he wasn’t used to them by now. Honestly, most people loved him because he was a fun guy and they overlooked his sexual discrepancies because he was a nice one too. But none of that meant he didn’t annoy people here and there, even if more of those people were his own family members. “Am I only allowed to flatter you if I want to get somewhere with you, Officer King?” He wondered what happened in her life that made her that way, but didn’t put enough effort into the thought to think past her loving parents to the trauma she experienced. Fallbrook felt like a little happy bubble and he wasn’t there to pop it. 

The unfortunate side effect of having given Dylan Valentine that look so many times over the years was that it no longer had the same impact. He remained undeterred by her glare or her comments and simply kept going. Other people saw the charm and good looks first, but because of past experience and gut feeling, all Sabrina saw were red flags when it came to the young man. It was difficult for the blonde to trust event the most earnest and genuine of people, so Dylan didn’t really stand much of a chance of getting on her good side. His main hope was staying off her bad one, which he repeatedly failed to do to differing degrees of significance. “Assuming you have a rudimentary understanding of the first amendment you already know the answer to that question. Was there anything else you wanted to spill on the ground or out of your mouth?”

Dallas saw the entire thing while slurping up her milkshake. “Don’t stop trying on my account. Fallen soldiers are part of the battle,” She teased, eyes on the pig in a blanket on the floor before looking at the blonde again. “Watching you is pretty entertaining.” She hadn’t talked with Sabrina in a bit but fell back to their ways in an instant. “Are you here all alone or did you finally snag a date?” 

At first, Sabrina was the littlest bit relieved. Obviously Dallas as an adult knew plenty swear words and wasn’t going to wilt over one being used in her presence.”Why do you ask, did my mom send you?” The blonde quipped in return. It was a brief moment of muscle memory, joking between friends. Except, they weren’t friends anymore and the officer still wasn’t certain as to why. She stiffened slightly, tone turning neutral and unemotional. “Glad you enjoyed the show. I should probably get going.”

His relationship with the local police department had never been the greatest. When he was a kid and young teen, moving into his adult years, he was always getting into trouble. And then he was landed in jail for nearly seven years because of theft he didn’t commit. Despite the record being cleared, the hesitation with the local officers was still around. So how did he find himself seated next to Sabrina King? That was beyond him but the bar was packed and he didn’t have anywhere else to go. He cleared his throat as he sat down, giving her a thin lipped smile. “Hey, Sabrina,” their relationship had been on the mend over the years but he never wanted to misstep around her. 

Noah Clarke had always been a bit notorious as far as Fallbrook PD was concerned. Not for the severity of the trouble he caused necessarily, but because of the story. Fallbrook was generally a kind and friendly place but anywhere you had people, you had gossip. Since he was a kid Noah had been an easy subject for whispers. The bad boy son of such a well-liked and prominent community family. The Clarke’s weren’t the richest people in Fallbrook but most people knew them and the standards the family conducted themselves with. Noah, of course, had never fit that picture and his decline into criminal behavior and eventually prison stints made for a good target. Sabrina herself had never known him incredibly well, he’d been a few years ahead in school and her focus had always been academics over socializing. Her opinion of him was fairly up in the air. Obviously she wasn’t a fan of anyone breaking the law, but he seemed to be working hard to keep his life steady these days. “Noah, how are you?” the blonde’s tone was polite but distant when she noticed his arrival.

 Rhys was scanning the menu and display with his eyes. “Pigs in blanket is always a good choice in my opinion!” He said with a small chuckle. Maybe that was just the brit in him talking though. His eyes glanced over towards the blonde, giving her a small glance as he tried placing her in his memory. She looked awfully familiar. “Oh, I am Rhys. Rhys Wilkes. I own the photograph studio down town.” He didn’t want to mention his freelance work as he was sure she didn’t recognize him from that, right? “And you are..?” 

Sabrina smiled slightly and nodded in agreement. It took a moment but her stormy gaze flashed with recognition as he elaborated with some details about himself that would provide some identification assistance. “Right, right. Cole’s older brother too.” She noted fairly confident she could know place Rhys at least slightly. “Sorry, I should’ve guessed given the context but I always prefer to have all the facts I can.” It was that kind of preference that could make her a good fit for her work but also sometimes frustrating socially. The blonde didn’t like large unknowns. “I’m Sabrina, I live over at Heartland Apartments right nearby the studio.”

Location: The Archer

Following up on someone using a stolen credit card to pay their hotel bill wasn’t exactly the most exciting kind of police work she’d ever done but it was keeping Sabrina busy for the moment at least. As the blonde was finishing up getting statements from the front desk clerk and a maintenance worker she saw Landon step out of the elevator and into the lobby of The Archer. Technically she didn’t need his statement or input, where they were in the case didn’t require his involvement but it wouldn’t be being good at her job if Sabrina decided against jumping on opportunity when it rose. Even if he didn’t know anything, it was good for him to feel in the loop considering the PD might require his assistance later on or even regarding another matter. “Mr. Archer, do you have a second?”

Location: Food Trucks at Whispering Willows

In hindsight, her decision to wear a mostly all-white costume was perhaps not the best one she’d ever made. It was pretty difficult to eat mummy-shaped pigs in a blanket with ketchup to dip them in without being very concerned about getting stains on herself. Sabrina sighed slightly to herself as she tried to think out the best way to dip the snack and then get it to her mouth without making a mess. In focusing too hard, the blonde accidentally ended up dropping it on the ground. “Shit!” The officer exclaimed, putting her head in her hands for a moment before looking around. She was a bit worried a small child might’ve heard her. But instead her eyes landed on someone she definitely hadn’t been expecting to see.

Location: Whispering Willows Pumpkin Patch

“Ivey! No! Dinosaurs don’t eat pumpkins! I don’t think they even had pumpkins in the Jurassic period!” The second half of the statement was more for herself for than the small child who had just tried to take a bite out of a jack o’lantern. As the little girl tried to make a break for another pumpkin to snack on, Sabrina scooped her up into her arms to ensure she couldn’t go running into more non-approved food options. “Hey Dom, I think I’m a failure at babysitting. She’s trying to pick a pumpkin with her mouth.” The blonde tried to be serious but couldn’t help but laugh a bit, Ivey was quite the entertainer.
