Script Analysis 4 - Skylar

Int State Theater - Night

Main Event - Skylar finds the lead to the 8 Ball.

Objective - Skylar is trying to gain sympathy from Kyle. Although she has come to the theater to get information, her real objective is to see whether or not Kyle is on her side and will continue being her friend. This plays into her wanting love because now that she seems to have lost her two sources of love, it is unsure whether or not she has any platonic love left. This is furthered by the fact that although Skylar and Kyle were on friendly terms, they were not friends outside the context of Ella, so Skylar does not know whether or not Kyle will still be on her side.

Int 8 Ball - Night

I chose these two examples to show the use of the contrasts between the various practicals within the shots. Majority of the light for this kind of scene would be primarily understood through practicals such as hanging lamps as shown above. I was also very interested in the idea of different color light and temperatures and shown above, as well. Having different colored lights to illuminate in respect to the colors of objects within the space and other lights.

Once Upon a Time

I picked this scene because it represents a slightly altered, higher stakes version of what is going on between Reese and Skylar. In the scenes, Reese and Ingrid both feel that they know the full story and want to apologize and explain to Skylar and Emma. However, Skylar and Emma have preconceived notions about the guilt and involvement of Reese and Ingrid in their current predicaments, so they are reluctant to hear them out until Reese and Ingrid reveal substantial new information. The cutting between shows the difference in dynamics between Ingrid and Emma’s intentions and heightens the intensity of the conversation.

We have discussed Skylar having a bit of a grungy look with a feminine twist -- with this look we see the artsy side of her reflected, pieces that match with Reese's aesthetic, and the feminine twist reminds us that she does have a connection with Ella -- she's not a simple polar opposite.

We have also discussed possibly designing our own band t-shirts for Reese and Skylar, and Skylar wearing a green jacket as a staple in her wardrobe, as well as combat boots.

Considering all of these factors, I thought that Skylar's outfit for when she meets Reese at The Eight Ball should be a band tee that we design, a skirt, opaque tights, and her customary combat boots with the green jacket.

I had trouble finding examples of exactly what I wanted, but here are some pictures that capture the general idea:

1) This look incorporates a lot of the elements I want. A tee tucked into a more feminine skirt, paired with a green jacket and combat boots. I do think she'd have the skirt cover more of her legs, our idea for her jacket is a bit different than this one, and her tights would need to be opaque, but I found this to be a good inspiration piece.

2) This look captures the feeling of what I had in mind: it has some edge, some grunginess, but the skirt and tights makes it a little more feminine. Other examples I have go a little more bold than I want Skylar to look, whereas this captures a degree of constraint, a little of the shyness Skylar has going on. However, it does not have the color schemes I want, and I would have her in her green jacket versus this leather one.

3) While I do envision Skylar in a tighter t-shirt being tucked into a skirt with some flare or pleats, this serves as an alternative I could get behind -- looser band shirt, straight skirt, with the jacket and the combat boots. I'm not a fan of this color scheme, she is missing the opaque tights, and I don't think she would have this many accessories, but I thought the different cuts and fits would be interesting to consider.

I think the look that these will combine to create would work for this scene because she is still on Ella's side (the feminine edge shown through the skirt), it's got some of her customary clothing (the jacket and the combat boots), has some of her grunginess/edginess without her getting overly bold (the opaque tights versus something less conservative), and I think the band tee could serve to start connecting her to Reese without it being too much too fast -- they both could have band tees on from the same genre, but different bands.

Drugs+Bar+Reese

Drugs: Didn't realize there were so many types of Adderall. While I like the look of the 30mg XR, and they are a strong dosage but could we consider blue pills? Even though they may look like viagra pills...

Bar: Unfortunately, I am not 21 yet so I have not been to a bar (yet). From my brief research there is a lot of history with the Blind Pig and the bar is a dive bar. Always Sunny's pub has a charming/disgusting look about it that is endearing. I guess that's what keeps people (never) coming back, judging by the Yelp reviews of the establishment. You often can't make out what's on the walls of Paddy's Pub. You have your typical neon signs and framed pictures. I'm thinking a Kiwanis/Salvation Army raid is in order.

While Charlie's breakdown in Perk of Being a Wallflower has almost nothing to do with Everything All at Once or any bar scene at that but I loved the method of revelation the post production team used. I want to put this sequence in conversation with the final revelation sequence of The Way, Way Back, which unfortunately is not on YouTube but available OnDemand.

I believe the tone of The Way, Way Back is more of what I had in mind of accomplishing, where it's kind of a shock and awe moment. That the people who are supposed to know you and love you the best see what they want to see. However, I like the way in which Perks of Being a Wallflower provides a push and pull of agency onscreen. It's not simply a shot-reverse shot sequence motivated solely by dialogue breaks but rather how each person is understanding the other beyond what they initially knew. I think it is motivated cuts like this alongside the tone of the ending of The Way, Way Back that could really bring this 8 Ball sequence to a level of tension and curiosity not only for the characters but for the audience as well.

This scene from The Fighter is different from the scene in EAAO as far as the dialogue and character dynamics go, but it's immediately what came to mind when I saw the design assignment this week for a few reasons. First of all, I think this is the first time we see Reese in his element, doing what he does well, and feeling like he's in a place where he belongs (unlike the isolated sense we get from him in the school scenes). I always think back on the above scene because Charlene (Amy Adams) is totally in her element. Yes, she gets harassed by various men, but she puts on the right face for it, sassing them back and standing up for herself because she knows she can. I think it'd be great to see Reese for a moment bar tending, feeling at home where he's working, and maybe just being happy for once. Once she starts talking to Mickey for a while, though, their conversation gets quiet and intimate, and they're able to have a personal conversation that feels private amongst the hubbub of the bar around them, which I think is perfect for our scene. And in a meta sort of way, before this film, I don't think Adams had played a character like this, most people seeing her as this naïve, optimistic actress. In this film she's tough, foul-mouthed, and emotionally subtle (compared to previous roles), and it was a shock, at least for me, when this scene was our introduction to Adams in The Fighter. I think that shock comes across to Skylar as well when she finally sees Reese somewhere where he belongs. She might not know a whole lot about his current life and he might seem like a mystery, but I bet even just the sight of seeing Reese working at The 8 Ball connects a few dots for her.

This scene is from the film Fargo, and I think that it encompasses the ambiance of the 8-Ball scene from EAAO well. For my design assignment, I mostly focused on the extras in the background. I think that this scene has the perfect balance of extras - the bar isn't empty but it also isn't packed. There are patrons playing pool, sitting in booths, and casually drinking around the bar, but they aren't crowding Jerry Lundegaard at his booth. The patrons are making enough noise in the background so that nobody can eavesdrop, but Jerry can still have an audible conversation. The music in the scene isn't exactly right for our film, but I think that it works well as a transition/introduction to the bar.

I think this scene from Fight Club demonstrates a very good balance between dialog and ambient sound. Every word of the conversation is easy to understand and yet the sounds coming from the rest of the bar's customers are very present. The characters' speech comes across as quiet yet focused. It is clearly a private conversation that nobody else can hear. At the same time, the ambient sounds are quite distinct. There are people playing pool, clinking glassware, and distinct groups talking/cheering. It is a very different soundscape compared to something like a city, where individual sounds tend to get lost and become more of a single ambient layer. Overall I think the audio in this scene does a great job of placing the viewer directly into the conversation taking place.

This scene depicts a lot of aspects I think we’re going for in the scene between Skylar and Reese at the 8 Ball. First of all, the two characters find themselves in a quieter, more intimate setting than what a “bar scene” can typically feel like. This places our focus on the actual conversation, and the emotional depth behind it. The tension between these two characters, who have gone through an emotional break up of sorts, is reflects a lot of the hurt that exists between Skylar and Reese at this point in the story. They both want things to be in a much better place than they are, but aren’t sure how to get there, and like Cal, Skylar feels that she’s “seen too much” to give Reese her full approval just yet.

In terms of the body language, I like the fact that these characters don’t look straight at each other the whole time, as they sit facing forward. Though Skylar and Reese will likely be facing each other in a booth, I think awkward body language and positioning will help heighten how uncomfortable they both are to be sitting in a bar together discussing such a heavy topic. The bar also serves as a key place in “Crazy, Stupid Love” to see character development unfold; likewise, we get a more developed sense of Reese’s character through seeing him work at the 8 Ball, and it adds another dimension to the underbelly of this small town.

Scene Analysis - Skylar

Int Science Classroom - Later

Main Event - Ella is rushed to the hospital.

Objective - Skylar’s objective here is to make sure her friend is okay. Her source of love is in danger of some sort and to her, that’s all there is in that moment. Skylar is not the person to let the momentary fight get in the way of her being there for Ella, especially when Ella is the main source of love for Skylar. Especially in that moment of panic, nothing else matters. If Ella dies, in Skylar’s mind she will be completely without love. Regardless of Evelyn, of Reese, of any of her other friends. It’s all riding on Ella.

I also found this image that reminded me of this scene from “Everything, All at Once” and it especially reminded me of The 8 Ball. This is not a still from a movie; it is an image of a bar in Boston called the Delux Cafe. I just thought I would throw it up here since the Christmas lights and the pictures on the walls remind me of The 8 Ball and the closeness of the two people sitting at the bar remind me of this scene.

I looked at one of the most well known “bar” scenes from “Good Will Hunting” for inspiration on how the producing team will work out logistics with using The 8 Ball as a location. The first two photos refer to our concern about extras. I think they did a good job in this movie making the bar seem busy without filling it with too many people. A good strategy that they used, which you can see in the images above, is having two or three people right behind the character in a close-up rather than having a large group of customers further in the background. Even with this small group of bar patrons, it appears as if there is activity in the bar.

The last image addresses our concern about covering up logos in The 8 Ball. After scouting the location, we noticed that every wall is covered in images of different beers and other brands to which we do not have rights. While we have come up with a possible solution for this problem, if there’s a certain shot that we want that just cannot avoid this logo issue, I found a great idea from “Good Will Hunting.” In the third image you can see an American flag hanging over pictures. We could possibly use a generic flag to cover any logos that are just impossible to avoid in a shot. I think it would still fit in with the feel of the bar and not be distracting from the scene.

I feel like Elliot Stabler from Law and Order SVU is a good example of how Detective Parker interacts with Skylar. Although he is not overly harsh or intimidating, as some detectives can be, he is very straight-talking and tells it how it is. He isn’t giving Skylar any slack just...

Clearly great minds think alike. The first, exact image that came to mind when I thought of the 8 Ball was this scene from Shame. Lighting, camera movement and level of intensity with long unbroken shots are simply magical in this scene. I personally forgot about how intense this scene is until I finally saw this clip again.
