I've seen so many bad interpretations lately about the ending of the Book of Circus arc that I just want to say: I find it so deeply moving that Ciel is unapologetically and belligerently human and that Sebastian likes it. That cruelty, that ugliness, that desire to the point of desperation, even in the face of all odds and all hopelesness, are a part of being human and that these are the things Sebastian finds so charming about them.

Sebastian looks at this boy and his glaring humanity and sees something worth adoring, worth dropping upon one knee for and serving. Ciel's humanity is not something he wants to break or diminish within him.

To elaborate on my previous thing about Sebastian not telling Ciel about the Sex Stuff:

Okay but what if Sebastian lies to Ciel when he does Sex Stuff for information not because it's ~inappropriate~ but because he knows nothing will get done because Ciel can and will force him into bed so he can shower his butler in affection and remind him of not only who he belongs to, but why belonging to Ciel is better than being with anyone else. What then.

Ciel forcing Sebastian into his bed like "no no, you're staying here. You don't get to leave me until you understand why you're here." And holding onto Sebastian, stroking his hair and just lavishing him in praise and affection and at some point he's like "do you understand now? This is why you're here with me. Because I'm the one who loves you the most. So don't you ever dare leave."

Imagine them going out on errands after Ciel finds out and Ciel is doing shit to purposefully get attention to like. Sort of remind Sebastian that he's not Ciel's only option (even if he's really the only one Ciel would choose) so if he were to leave Ciel would be fine. And then they get home and Ciel is like "see? You're lucky you're the one I love the most." and he kisses Sebastian's cheek and just goes on with his day like he's not fucking with Sebastian.

Of course he'd obviously make up for any hurt feelings later - for a week or two he'll praise him a little more often and give him a bit more affection, and by the end of it Sebastian doesn't remember why he was upset at all, of course Ciel is the person he should be with. Ciel is better than anyone else.

Ciel's fear and mistrust of Sebastian is directly adjacent to his general avoidance of affection. And I'm going to talk about it entirely too much beneath the cut.

You could argue there's a lot of symbolism specifically in the panel where Sebastian gazes at his mouth while Ciel stares up at his teeth: one sees a monster, the other sees a pretty mouth. The entire flashback to the formation of the contract is fascinating in general because we've already seen it from Sebastian's perspective in the Campania arc; the difference is that any possible menace from Sebastian's was completely glossed over, while Ciel's perspective makes repeated emphasis of his more terrifying qualities. Sebastian's recollection is contrastingly quite romantic.

Which brings to mind how the predator-prey theme plays into sexuality in general, and makes this panel more interesting.

It's a really fair assumption that the lyrics were written by Sebastian. The song title invokes his assigned chess piece and clearly references the contract. We all know none of the other boys wrote it! These lyrics did not come out of a vacuum!!

It's not... A terribly subtle element of Sebastian's character. From the start of the series, he flirts with him in a fairly aggressively manner: with the comment about pleading from the 4th chapter, with the dancing lessons and the investigation into Druitt, with his declaration of devotion to Ciel that appropriates Grell's reference to Romeo and Juliet. Ciel isn't receptive to his behavior and instead deeply internalizes the moment where Grell (a butler) murders Madam Red (a master) for showing emotions. That internalization is clear when Sebastian tries to needle him for his emotions after the funeral and Ciel denies their existence, bitterly quoting various phrases from the altercation with Grell as he does. All of this can be interpreted as a rejection and fear of Sebastian's offered affection.

Fear of Sebastian, who makes these overtures towards him that he rejects. Pushing away affection. Fear of affection, fear of sex. It's a fairly common motif in adult works for a virgin to be fearful of the person advancing on them; fearful of being "stripped naked". Ciel's past sexual trauma is referred to in the canon almost as much as his immaturity and unpreparedness (which the canon makes an effort to note is not unnoticed by Sebastian).

Sebastian in general for the series comes with a pretty heavy degree of sexual emphasis. He's referred to as a "seducer" by William in the Jack the Ripper arc and as tainting one with his lips and hands by Grell. We see him do the seducing more than once. Sebastian and Ciel foil one another quite well in this regard, with Sebastian representing a sexual, masculine presence while Ciel is chaste and depicted in a deliberately feminine way.

These themes all come together and are not especially separate to start with. Sebastian is Ciel's abhorrent admirer and Ciel pushes him away, fearful of being consumed, mistrusting of the energy with which he makes his advances. And it will be interesting to see how the series will address all of these elements in the future.
