âWell, if the position is open, Iâd be happy to knife some assholes for you,â she offered in a beat, offering Sadie a red tinted lopsided smile. âFriends or no friends â or more than friends.â Josie chewed on her lip to prevent herself from grinning when the blonde answered her proposition with such enthusiasm, allowing her mind wander hopeful places it shouldnât get too attached to. âCome on then, letâs go.â
Her palm met Sadieâs back when the wobbled in her feet, afraid that she might fall. âI got you,â she said, bringing the blondeâs weight against herself, a solid figure to steady her. Josie grabbed the plate off the table and handed the girl a bottle of tequila with a warning, âCarefulâ, before leading her out the door and into the patio. Her free hand rested against Sadieâs hip as she walked her all the way to the spot next to a flowerbed.
The night was dark and the air was crisp, and she took the bottle away from her, setting it next to them on the stone bench, and the plate on Sadieâs lap as she refused to have anything between them at the moment. âWhat are you doing in Santa Ysabel, Sadie?â
âYouâre hired.â Position. Positions. Oh god Sadieâs mind was a whirlwind and was she hallucinating it or was the way those red lips curved for her an invitation? Friends, no friends....more....than...friends. Sadieâs heart is threatening to beat out of her chest, her insides are molten lava chocolate, her skin is a spattering of spun sugar, her eyes are fucking honey and caramel and her lips look like theyâd taste like cherries. Ruby red grapefruit.
Sheâs never been so glad to be clumsy when intoxicated as she is now, with that palm against the small of her back, leaning into her, close enough to smell her perfume. Talk about intoxicating. This has to be a dream, it must be a dream, fuck sheâs so goddamn pretty and thereâs pressure on her hip and Sadie grips the tequila bottle with two hands and never wants that pressure to leave.
It does of course, as they settle outside on the stone bench. The plate is in her lap, the tequila to her left, Josieâs warmth to her right. Their legs are touching, Sadie is still leaning into her just a little. Okay no, a lot. âMmm, I moved here for the aesthetic,â she answered, the tips of her fingers brushing against Josieâs hand. âI owned a bakery bakery in Philadelphia. But...I had to spend so much time running it that I started to miss the feeling of working the dough, coming up with recipes. I got kind of restless. And a friend of mine came to this town for his honeymoon and said he thought it would be the perfect place for me. And hear Iâve been for a year now, baking sweets, getting high, getting drunk, swooning over pretty girls on stone benches. What about you?â
