eating disorder, bulimia nervosa
Sadie was born and raised in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada with an older brother that was her best friend. Together, they went through the motions of surviving two parentâs that had high expectations for their siblings. For as long as she could remember, her brother dreamed of leaving Vancouver, traveling and learning about the world around him. Sadie found herself living vicariously through her plans to get out of Vancouver when she had no plans herself. Sadie didnât know what she wanted do with her life when she was a kid, only trying to focus on being a kid. It didnât always pan out that way, as she was often held to a higher standard by her parentâs. They were successful and wanted the same for both of their children, seemingly at whatever cost necessary.
The expectation that Sadie and Theo follow in their parentâs footsteps were well known. They couldnât fathom their children being anything than a doctor or lawyer or anything that gave them a secure future. Plans of travel were often thrown out the window and growing up seeing it, Sadie didnât even try to suggest that she do the same thing. The pressures placed on Theo, fell promptly to her, which she saw, even if they were six years apart in age. The age difference didnât weigh much on Sadie, because when it came to family, Theo was it. She didnât have the same weight as being the first born, like he did but there were pressures and those pressures led to Sadie wanting to be the most perfect daughter in the entire world. When it came to school, Sadie knew that she had to have perfect attendance, the perfect grades and the right friend group. Setting herself up for success was pertinent.
However, that was not always the case and Sadie made sure to hide things from her parents growing up. She would change letter grades on her paperâs or change names on papers and borrow her friendâs papers that had a better grade on it. If she ever failed a test, she went to Theo to sign the test saying that her parentâs saw it. Itâs not that Sadie wanted to fail, but at times, when the pressures got to her, she collapsed under the weight of it all. An eating disorder came as the result and while few people in her life knew of her troubles, there was one person that did. Her big brother was her rock and when things got hard, she went to him, hoping that he could fix her. Ultimately, she knew that he couldnât and unknowingly, Sadie added more pressures to her brotherâs life. As she was only ten years old when she developed the eating disorder and Theo was only sixteen.
Her friends were very important to her growing up, but she couldnât always be honest with them. To maintain the perfect image, Sadie hid her eating disorder very well, except from Theo who she dumped all of her feelings about it on. Despite their six year age difference, she trusted him more than anyone else in the world. It was why when she was only twelve years old and he left for college, her eating disorder took a turn for the worse. It went under the radar for years as she maintained a normal body weight, if not higher than the average one for her size. No one suspected a thing and with her brother gone for college, Sadie felt entirely abandoned by the one person in her life that she could trust. Her young and naive outlook on life did not help those wounds heal any faster as the years went on.
It was a turn to music that helped Sadie begin to heal. Picking up guitar in her music class at school was not something she thought she would enjoy, or be good at. Her parentâs, however, made it very clear that this was just to be a hobby for her and that she werenât to pursue any musical career for herself later in life. At the time, she wasnât thinking of that, just thinking that getting lost in the music made her feel better. She didnât play in front of people often, mostly keeping the talent to herself for many years. Few people knew how well she could play, Jace being one of those people. In addition to playing the guitar, she dabbled in singing and song-writing, but she kept those even more private from people in her life. She could only imagine what her parentâs would have to say about that, simply because she didnât think anything would come of it.
As her teenage years went on, Sadie found herself growing harder and harder on herself. High school came with the pressures of finding a college, narrowing down a major and getting the scholarship funding. Sadie didnât have to worry much about funding as her parentâs had long set up a college fund for her but what she did have to worry about, was what she wanted to do with the rest of her life. As Theo found his groove in life, getting also to travel like he wanted, she constantly found herself at a loss. The pressures just kept adding on to her and it wasnât until she found herself sitting in the counselorâs office at school that she realized just how much stress she put herself under on top of the pressures from her parentâs.
The help started when she was in her late teens, sometime before her junior year of high school. The high school counselor had caught her purging in the bathroom once and that was the end of that, at least it was going to be. The help didnât come easily and it took time for Sadie to even admit that she had a problem in the first place and once she did - it was like things started to turn around for her. Vancouver was no longer a place she also wanted to escape, hoping that she would turn out like her brother and find a life that she loved. Instead, Sadie had to figure out a way to love the life that she had and find things in life that made herself happy. The recovery to the eating disorder was never ending and one that she would carry throughout the rest of her life, but she was lucky to have found someone to care so much about her as such an early age.
When high school graduation rolled around, it was no surprise to anyone that she graduated second to the top of her class. The hard work had paid off and it had been two years since Sadie had partaken in any negative habits regarding her eating disorder. It was a win, in her book. However, when it came to college, she still wasnât sure what she wanted to do. Sadie did appease her parentâs and start college classes but it wasnât long before she dropped out of them. After two years of classes, Sadie found that they werenât for her. She didnât know what she wanted to do and taking the basic classes werenât really cutting it for her. This disappointed her parentâs more than she could have ever expected to do so but there was nothing they could really do at that point. Sadie could only promise that she would go back to school.
Six years later and Sadie has tried classes again, here and there but nothing has really stuck out to the woman. In the meantime, she became a waitress at Roxy Burger and has been living off the menial wages that she makes working there. In addition to that, she did the one thing her parentâs warned against, also, she joined a band. Around the age of twenty-two, Jace suggested joining the band he was recruited into to play backup guitarist when one of the guitarists was singing. Sadie couldnât turn down the offer and a chance to continue to do something that she loved. She knew, still, that it wasnât a career but she kept hoping that a career that she loved and her parentâs approved off would fall into her lap at some point. Sadie continuously looks at job ads, wondering what else is out there for her. Over the course of her class-taking, she has completed a bachelorâs degree in science. It isnât what she is super passionate about it, but she has a degree under her belt, she just needs the right spark for career passion to find her still.
Since Theoâs return to town two years ago, she has found it hard to forgive her brother. Especially when he returned home with a wife. The communication between the two had been few and far between since he left Vancouver, simply because she didnât know if she had it in her to forgive him. Over the last two years, she has been working on forgiving him but it isnât easy to let her brother back into her life, as much as she might want to. Itâs an ongoing battle with herself on how much she can trust Theo nowadays, constantly worried that he just might up and leave her again without telling her anything in his life.
