Whumptober Day 5

Debris | Pinned Down | “It’s Broken.”

Characters: Dare (She/Her), Orius (He/Him)

The ringing in her ears died down after a while, far too much time passing for her to properly judge. Dust and smoke filled her lungs and she fought against it for precious air, her breaths coming out in wheezy gasps.

Only the more air she took in, the more apparent it was that something was pinning her chest down, teetering on the edge of breaking her ribs.

Did they make it out? They had to have, right?

“Guys?” Her voice was barely a whisper, pathetic and meek. Unlike her. “Guys!”

She was loud. Brash. Daring. She was Dare, for heaven’s sake!

So why was it so hard to get up and running?

“G-Guys?” The girl’s lip trembled and she screwed her eyes shut, trying to keep the tears in. Goddammit, it wasn’t supposed to end up like this.

Dare tried to move, only for the sound of concrete grinding against concrete echo in the space.

Right. The base. She—She’d helped them! She warned them! They didn't... They wouldn't leave her after that, right?

So why was she here?

Something sharp pressed against her back and Dare grunted, her free hand scraping against the floor.

No… No, she… She didn’t want to die alone. Not like this.

“Guys?” Her voice was barely audible now, strained.

It all went black.

Until she was woken up by voices and movement.

“…ful. On my mark. And… hup!”

In an instant, Dare gasped for breath only to choke on the fine particles of debris. Something held her head up, keeping her steady as she cleared her lungs. Tears freely flowed down her face.

“There ya go. Easy, now. Orius! She’s living.”

She leaned her whole weight against the woman, aching for any warmth. Any comfort. Damn it.

“M-My arm, I—I can’t…”

“We know. It’s broken.”

She coughed, but a bitter smile snuck onto her face.

“Figures.”

Orius gently placed his hands under Dare, who hissed, trying to move.

“Don’t do that, you might hurt yourself further. Steady…”

She couldn’t do more than suck in a sharp breath.

“You’re all right. You’re okay, there we go. You’ll be fine.”

Ancestors

He was close.

He knew he was.

He could practically feel it—

Farsc took a breath and skimmed the passage. Again. His eyes tracked the words before him, his tail still save for the smallest of twitches at the very end.

It was hard to track the data. So much had been lost when the Emperor who’d fallen before his time had so much of it purged. So much knowledge, so many stories, lost to the stars. He’d never even heard of a Jedi until he was a teenager and heard the tales of an elder so ancient, he had a hard time wrapping his head around just how much she must have seen in her life.

His head lifted, to glance up at the ancient starship that had survived countless bombings of the museum that housed it with barely a scratch.

It was an ugly old thing.

Ugly, in an…oddly endearing sort of way, he thought as a little chuckle escaped him.

The thing had been in his family for generations before a great-grandfather (there was a lot of greats in there, he couldn’t even remember how many generations ago the guy lived) had donated it to a little museum tucked away on Coruscant.

What was known about it wasn’t much. It was a spacer’s freighter, used for smuggling if the hidden compartments within were any indicator. Outdated even for its time, but apparently as reliable as they came.

Farsc had found scarce records of the ship’s involvement in countless battles, seen on countless planets across the galaxy, even found passages that suggested its involvement with the fabled Eternal Alliance. And that…oh, that was what he really latched onto.

The original captain’s name had long been lost over thousands of years.

A shame, he thought. He’d have loved to know the name of the ancestor the freighter had belonged to.

He tipped his head and glanced back down at the screen in front of the ship’s display.

Farsc swiped at the screen with a hum, looking over the holo images that had been taken of the inside of the starship, as visitors weren’t actually allowed in it. There were crates stacked haphazardly and old cloth eaten away by time draped on the backs of chairs. A cluttered captain’s suite with a bed big enough for two, comfy accommodations for the bunks the rest of the crew must have used, a cute little kitchen and a seating area around a holo that looked quite relaxing. Dings in the walls within and scrapes across the floors showed it had seen constant use.

It had been a home, he realized. Not just a ship for a job.

The name of the old thing had nearly been stripped away over the years, but it was still just faintly there, painted in a scrawling, messy handwriting that the museum curators tried diligently to keep from fading anymore than it already had.

The Star Hopper.

His tail flicked and he smiled.

His ancestor had lived in the stars, hadn’t they?

…The stars.

That was his answer, wasn’t it? He couldn’t stay on Coruscant if he wanted to keep digging. He had to look elsewhere.

He had to look to the stars to find where the clues left off.

His peers may have leered at him for chasing a children’s fantasy, but he knew. He just… He had a feeling.

There was evidence of the existence of the Eternal Alliance. Very little of it, but evidence nonetheless. There were clues, left behind by it.

And…what if the Star Hopper’s navigation computer was the piece of the puzzle he needed to dig deeper?

Others had tried and failed to follow the clues, but had anyone connected the dots to the Star Hopper? Or was Farsc grasping for straws at this point…

He took a deep breath.

He had the pieces. He knew he did.

He just had to figure out how to put them together to find the people who’d seemingly vanished without a trace from their galaxy. People, who’d brought so many together against a common enemy whose name was lost to history. People, who’d formed an army and a culture and then disappeared just as quickly.

He wanted—no, needed—to know what had happened to them. The curiosity would eat him alive if he didn’t at least try to figure it out.

He needed that ship’s star charts.

Favorite OC: Dare

This was a HELLA toughie run between Dare and Burrow, but ultimately, I fantasize about Dare the most. She's got a pretty conflicting moral compass and is always at odds with herself and the world. Plus, it's super fun to imagine her in different scenarios!

Newest OC: Syrup/Nightshade

Syrup's relatively new! She's a catfolk with a knack for taming wild animals. Her story's still all over the place, kind of, but it's being worked on! Mainly fantastical.

Oldest OC: Princess Acacia

What I believe to be my first ever actual OC, Princess Acacia -- daughter of Betula, Queen of the Charmed -- came to be when I was contemplating on a sort of prince and princess swap plotline. Still heavily under works, but when do I never have anything under works? :'>

Meanest OC: Glowstrike

A mysterious villain hidden behind a visor and under a mechanical suit. Sleek, strong, and powerful. Nobody but those that trained and molded them know their true identity.

They've done awful things, but heroes have noticed they've been... holding back? Something's off.

Softest OC: Black Rosen

This boy just wants to try and make the most of his situation involving demons in his suspiciously-cheap-yet-proved-why home. He's non-confrontational in the slightest, looks like a sleep-deprived vampire, but is an absolute sweetheart that cherishes his suspiciously-smart cat and will take in any strays he finds in need of help.

Most Aloof/Standoffish OC: Syrup/Nightshade

During the day, she's Syrup: A young catfolk with no family to call hers. During the night, she's Nightshade: A vigilante-type character with no mercy. She's currently working day and night to find a certain someone. She doesn't trust anyone save for her loyal companions.

Dumbest (Affectionate) OC: Jackie Vera-Alvin

It's gotta be Jackie in any universe. She's just a girl who wants to make friends and sees past the obvious red flags that scream "Stranger Danger! WILL most likely gut you!"

Somehow, things still work out in the end. 🤔

Smartest OC: Coy Paxton

In a world full of superhumans, those that have no superpowers to call their own would mostly live in the support roles. Some end up working office roles, others genuinely enjoy the coziness of local business-owning. Coy, however, began working on his own inventions that could mimic the more 'iconic' powers: flight, invisibility, and speed. (Super strength is a WIP right now). His knack for technology actually got him into the city's hero academy!... But some say it's to keep a closer eye on him...

He didn't cry.

It's not that he was afraid to--afraid to show weakness, vulnerability--but he just...didn't.

He showed his sorrow in other ways. In the bowing of his head, in soft words, in a furrowed brow. And sometimes, his voice might even break. Showed his joy, in a slight pull of the lips, and creased eyes. His pain, in bared teeth and a tight grip on his weapon.

But he didn't cry.

Yet...

And yet--

The moment he was close to the settlement, he'd felt it--her. A weight he'd never even known was there seemed to lift from his shoulders, even if only slightly.

And as he stepped into that tiny building, as his eyes scanned those within, he couldn't help it.

Not as she stopped dead in her tracks and practically lunged at him.

Not as she wrapped her arms around him in a way that said she never wanted to let go, buried her face in his robes as she mumbled his name.

Years.

Years, since he'd ordered her to Ossus with the others.

Years, since she'd last hugged him.

He'd never been one for hugs, really. But he'd made an exception that day. An exception, for the girl he'd trained; the girl, who he'd practically raised himself after the death of her father. Made an exception now, as he brought his own arms up to hold her close.

"Nadia." It was tiny. Even for his soft voice, it was oh, so quiet even as it cracked at the end.

He wasn't one to cry.

But he didn't try to hide a few tears, either.
