Ibn ʿAbd al-Barr mentioned: “There are three characteristics which if they are found in a man, then there is no doubt that he is a sane and good man:

وَذَكَرَ ابْنُ عَبْدِ الْبَرِّ: ثَلَاثٌ إذَا كُنَّ فِي الرَّجُلِ لَمْ يُشَكَّ فِي عَقْلِهِ وَفَضْلِهِ:

If he is praised by his neighbour,

إذَا حَمِدَهُ جَارُهُ

By his relatives

وَقَرَابَتُهُ

And by his friends.

وَرَفِيقُهُ.

Three things make life unbearable:

كَدُرَ الْعَيْشِ فِي ثَلَاثٍ:

A bad neighbour,

الْجَارِ السَّوْءِ،

A disobedient child

وَالْوَلَدِ الْعَاقِّ،

And a badly-behaved and unreasonable wife.”

وَالْمَرْأَةِ السَّيِّئَةِ الْخُلُقِ.
