"I'm really glad you're my mentor, rather than someone older and scary!" Izuku murmured quietly. It was really nice to be around someone his own age, considering that it's a new place and lots of rules and customs to remember. "I can't wait to learn from you - I'll do my best to not to waste time or let anything go to waste."

At the question regarding all his stuff, Izuku nodded, gesturing to a bag tied on his back. "This is it." he explained quietly, having not come with much. A couple of haoris, other clothes and some keepsakes from his home. Eyes welled up thinking about it, but he pushed it down to not cause worry.

"Whoa...this is mine?" He stepped inside, looking at it with interest. It was super big! He'd always slept on a futon, but he's looking forward to having a bed too. "Wow...thank you!" he can't help but be pleased. He opted to set the bag on the bed for now. "I can't wait to decorate!" For now, though, he's clearly excited to see the rest of the village. "I hear that the hot springs here are really good for healing?"

            “  Yeah !  The hot springs are pretty nice,  and it's a spot on our village tour,  so let's just head over there now !  ”   Hiro grinned,  beckoning for his new student to follow him again.  As they walked away from the more populated village center toward the more secluded area where the hot springs were located,  he glanced over pensively at Izuku.  Although the hot springs were known for helping to promote healing,  they were generally known for just being relaxing above all else.  Izuku's vague mention of barely making it out alive of Final Selection earlier,  however,  made Hiro curious about the boy's specific mention of the hot springs' restorative properties.

            “  So...  healing ?  Are you still recovering from an injury ?  ”   he finally asked with concern,  breaking the silence.   “  It's not a problem if you are.  It's just that some parts of swordsmith work are pretty physical,  y'know,  so I don't wanna push you too hard with that if you're hurt.  ”

“It was pretty scary.” Izuku responded back quietly, some memories flashing through. He’d come so close to being devoured several times; but he wouldn’t ever regret this. it led him down the path of a swordsmith, something that the boy was passionate about. In his own way, he could still be part of the Corps and assist other people. He’s very thankful for the subject change; latching onto the new topic.

“I really am excited to learn! I want to learn everything there is, and make some swords that can help people.” Izuku can’t help but babble a bit, grinning again at the blades. “I can’t believe this isn’t perfect! It looks amazing, the craftsmanship is out of this world!” There’s a blink as he processes the first bit. “Wait, you’ve perfected the katana…?! But…you must be about my age! That’s incredible!”

            “  Of course,  why do you think they let me be your mentor ?  ”   Hiro replied proudly.   “  They finally had to admit I could do it when I was thirteen.  I'm sixteen now.  ”

            As much as he would've loved to stand around and go over each of the blades and where each imperfection was — for strictly educational purposes,  obviously,  because if Izuku really thought they looked perfect,  he had a lot to learn — Hiro did have an agenda of sorts that the elders wanted him to take care of.   “  We'll definitely come back to this later.  You have all your stuff with you,  right ?  I'll show you where you'll be living so you can drop it off before I show you around the rest of the village.  ”

            He led the way,  stopping to open the door to a modest room that was currently empty except for a bed,  desk,  and dresser.   “  Here we are !  You can decorate it however you want;  it's yours now.  ”

“That's pretty cool.” Minoru affirms, having taken out his earbuds to regard the other boy as he formulated his own conclusion about how favorable this turned out. This was the most convenient solution to the tragedy of the commons. For there to actually have been two Gundam kits left on the shelf they'd both reached for means he lucked out. Not like some invisible phenomena like luck existed, so he'd call this convenient for convenience's sake. No need to bargain for resources when everyone who sought what was finite walked out fulfilled. “I thought people could get in trouble for counterfeits if the copyrighted designs came out perfect. You got the specs for the printer? I want to check out 3D printing so I don't have to line up to these popups.” These limited editions Gundams were getting more expensive, and he's getting lazy wearing out the soles of his shoes waiting in line with a bunch of other nerds flexing. “They can get crowded. I'm heading to the café to start building mine. It's quieter.”

            “  Well,  it's not really illegal to make a replica,  especially if you model everything yourself and only print it for your own personal use,  not to sell it !  ”   He winked conspiratorially,  clearly having thought about this before.   “  I'd do it more if I didn't already have a ton of other not-just-for-fun stuff I need to do the same process for,  only it's even more work 'cause I have to actually do the design part too.  I mean,  I love what I do,  but the modeling part gets old sometimes.  Since it sounds like you aren't already doing a bunch of 3D printing,  that shouldn't be a problem,  though,  so don't worry.  It's great for DIY Gundam stuff once you get the hang of it.  ”   Hiro tried to be encouraging at the end of his roundabout ramble.  The do-it-yourself 3D printing route really was one he would recommend !

            “  You mean the one down on the corner ?  I'm going there too !  It's my aunt's place.  I can even show you the printer there if you want.  ”   He extended the invitation enthusiastically,  excited by the chance to share more with someone his own age who'd shown interest in the same things he liked.   “  I'm Hiro,  by the way.  ”

While the other boy worked, Izuku couldn’t help himself but take in the workshop around him. it was amazing! Sure, it was also a lot, but his eyes are drawn to the blades. The level of detail was incredible! Izuku can’t help but look, at least until Hiro addressed him.

The boy relaxed immediately at the change in demeanour, open and warm; Izuku’s shoulders relaxed and released tension that he didn’t even know he was carrying. Exhaling a breath and immediately smiling back, albeit carrying a hint of nervousness. “Ah, no…the rules are a lot to get used to, but it makes a lot of sense why it needs to be this way!” Pausing for a moment and messing with his own fingers, almost picking at the skin around his nails. “I originally wanted to be a slayer.” Izuku explained quietly. “But, ah…I couldn’t find a breathing style that really fit. I almost got killed during the final selection, I’m still not sure how I made it out alive. But I found the ores really interesting, and I still wanted to help people and the corps…so wanted to become a swordsmith.” Saying it out loud was a bit embarrassing, thankful that his cheeks were mostly covered.

“Thank you for taking me on; I promise to work hard! I don’t want to be in the way or a bother…” He’s picking at the skin by this point, anxiety rising in his stomach. “Your workshop is really amazing…! Those blades….” He can’t quite tear his eyes away when glancing over again.

            The other boy didn't go into much detail about his near-death experience during Final Selection,  yet Hiro didn't feel right prying for more information,  even if he was curious.  He knew enough about the process to be aware of the risks,  but he couldn't imagine actually going through it himself.  Izuku was clearly strong if he could survive that.   “  Whoa,  that must've been...  scary,  ”   was the response he settled on.  Luckily,  the subject quickly moved on to something lighter.

            “  Don't sweat it,  you seem like you're excited to learn,  and that's what really matters.  ”   Izuku would be Hiro's first student;  frankly,  he was surprised the elders even allowed him to be a mentor at all when they had a tendency to give him jobs that were below his skill level.  He had a suspicion it was so that he would have less free time to work on his unauthorized side projects,  but regardless,  it was an acknowledgement of his talent and he wasn't going to pass up the opportunity to show off.

            When Izuku mentioned his blades,  Hiro lit up.   “  Pretty sick,  right ?  They're not perfect yet,  but I'm practicing.  I perfected my technique on the standard katana ages ago,  and they won't assign me anything more complicated because  'I'm too young', which is stupid.  I wanted a challenge,  so I started making those in between jobs.  They're way more fun to work on than the regular ones.  The construction is more intricate and finicky,  but that's why they're so cool !  ”

Thankfully, becoming a swordsmith had gone a lot better than Final Selection. Izuku couldn’t help but be thankful for that; despite effectively starting from the bottom. He was totally fine with that, having grown used to proving himself. For the time being; he’d be on swords for beginner slayers and preforming delivery of swords. Honestly, despite the swirling anxiety growing in the pit of his stomach, Izuku was eager to get stuck in and assist the corps in his own way.

Adjusting the mask over his face - this was certainly going to take some getting used to; Izuku studied the paper in his hands for the umpteenth time. Elder Tecchikawahara had instructed him to find another boy called Hiro; supposedly he was a prodigy and perfect to teach him the ropes. According to the instructions, Hiro’s workshop was in inside this hut. Swallowing heavily, raising a hand to gently knock before sliding the door open.

“Um, hello? Is there a Hiro-san here?” Peeking his head inside and glancing around. “Sorry for the intrusion! Elder Tecchikawahara sent me here…uh, to show me around and get me used to the village and start me off?” He rambled before he could help it.

            He didn't let the knock at the door startle him,  keeping the pressure and movement on the sharpening stone consistent through the sudden intrusion.   “  It's open,  ”   he called,  his voice just as calm and level as his motion.  Once he completed the action,  he put the blade down and finally turned around to see a nervous-looking boy in his doorway.

            “  Yep,  that's me !  ”   Hiro said,  his demeanor shifting dramatically.  Now,  his voice was bright and enthusiastic,  reflecting the wide grin on his face.  His workshop was modest in size and every nook and cranny was chaotically filled.  Some shelves sagged under the weight of boxes piled high with scrap metal pieces,  while others held stacks of paper inked with schematics detailing different custom weapon designs.  A rack held a variety of completed blades,  imperfect replicas of some of the most recognizable weapons in the Demon Slayer Corps:  those wielded by certain hashira.

            “  You must be Izuku.  It's been a while since we got an outsider interested in joining our ranks;  I hope all the rules and secrecy don't scare you off.  ”   Having grown up in this world,  Hiro wasn't exactly sure how difficult it would be for an outsider to adjust to this life.  From what he'd heard,  a common way that outsiders found their way into the village was when normal swordsmiths encountered demons and then chose to dedicate their talents to Corps.   “  What made you want to join ?  Did you come from an outside swordsmith practice ?  ”

rio nods along furiously to the other boy’s explanation , hands clutched into excitement - suppressing fists near his chest . detectives aren’t a foreign concept to him , although he’s still managing to wrap his head around the difference between the mystery solving agents of justice with their long trench-coats and caps and the more . . . forceful types of law enforcement . the frightening man who put him behind bars a few months ago , for example , wasn’t anything like the pair of detectives who visited briefly . they did not walk around with sharp weapons , nor did they taunt and threaten those worthy of suspicion . and if the boy who had been so kind and accepting of his repeated social blunders willingly worked with them , could they really be something to fear ? as usual , he doesn’t know . ❝ oh , well . . . it sounds like you care about them alot . ❞ the surface level conclusion escapes rio’s mouth mindlessly , much to the boy’s alarm , who subsequently reacts by slapping a hand over his mouth . ❝ sorry . I don’t know anything at all . I - I’m just - ❞ his muffled speech trails off as rio’s brain catches up with the rest of hiro’s explanation , his heart plummeting abruptly into the pit of his stomach at the very mention of his brother’s murder . the somber emotional bomb - drop drains the blood from his complexion , leaving a visible effect on the boy who’s currently nothing more than a stranger ; and yet , when the hand slowly lowers from his mouth , there’s a quivering frown plastered across his ashen face .

❝ that . . . sounds really painful . I’m glad the detectives were able to help you . ❞ for once , the knowledge of his own brother’s capture fills him with relief . it’s better than the alternative . he feels a bit mystified , unable to understand how hiro can possibly stand to exist and engage in this conversation with him after facing such a terrible tragedy . after losing someone so near and dear . ( how does he live with himself ? rio couldn’t . how can he survive without his brother ? rio wouldn’t . ) the guilt pertaining to his comparative fortune forms a knot in his throat , one that threatens to suffocate him no matter how many times he tries to swallow it down . desperate to alleviate the sensation , rio selfishly attempts to divert the topic despite being the one to draw attention to it in the first place . ❝   . . . what’s engineering ? ❞

            “  What's...  engineering ?  ”   He slowly repeated the question in disbelief,  the previous topic of discussion immediately and completely forgotten as he tried to wrap his head around the inquiry.  People had asked him about his major before,  but usually those questions were about what set his specific discipline apart from the others,  not about the entire field of engineering in general.  The other boy looked to be about his age,  so Hiro was surprised that he hadn't already started getting spiels about engineering from his school counselors at least.  They were pushing that career path on Hiro from the moment he started high school,  so it was hard to believe that a teenager had never even heard of it.  But as shocked as he was by the question,  he wasn't going to judge the boy when he seemed to be completely genuine in asking.  Hiro was happy to explain.  After all,  he loved talking about his studies to pretty much anyone who would listen,  so this was actually a great opportunity.

            “  Hm,  the simplest way I can put it is that it's the practical application of science — using and applying what we do know to try to solve problems or improve technology.  There are a lot of different disciplines,  though,  and they all focus on different areas.  It would be crazy to try to become an expert in them all,  but a lot of times they work together.  I'm a mechanical engineer,  so I work with,  well,  mechanical systems.  Things like machines and cars,  but technically not planes and rockets because those are aerospace and they need to focus a lot more on aerodynamics and propulsion and stuff like that,  but they're pretty closely related.  My specialty is robotics,  which mostly overlaps with electrical and computer science,  obviously,  'cause you need electrical circuits and a program to make a robot work.  ”   Throughout his speech,  Hiro had gesticulated quite enthusiastically,  and by the time he finished,  a proud smile turned up the corners of his lips.   “  I'm definitely biased,  but I'm also right:  robotics is totally the coolest field of them all !  ”

❝ . . . that ain’t it . ❞ the blonde registers an unforgivable error the very moment this kid read off his total , and he has every intention to correct it . jades narrow behind the dark tint of his shades as the blonde skeptically produces a twenty from his pocket before promptly smacking it down on the counter for the kid to take at his discretion . anyone’s who spent the better half of his life counting coins and desperately fishing for leftover , crumpled dollar bills in the pockets of old worn jeans like he has would never make a purchase without accessing the cost beforehand . he knew how much his order would add up to , tax and additional tip included , before he stepped foot into the establishment . the last five times he’s disgraced the cafe with his troublesome presence ( an inherent risk he attempts to mitigate by pulling his jacket’s hood over his head as far as it’ll go and wearing sunglasses inside like a real douchebag . ) , his total was significantly higher . there hasn’t been a change of prices on the menu - he would know , cos’ he’s had it memorized for weeks and still continues to scan it over every-time he walks in for good measure . if something changed , ash would take notice immediately . at an apparent loss and unable to accept what could either be an honest mistake or a ridiculous act of generosity , the teen stubbornly remains in place , making no move to collect his order even after handing over more payment than what was required . ❝ what gives ? y’er off by four dollars and thirteen cents . fix it . ❞

            “  I don't know what you're talking about.  Your total is correct.  Even if the register didn't calculate it automatically,  I know how to do math.  ”   The statement was as frank as a fourteen year old mechanical engineering major could muster.  A 'duh' at the end was implied.  Seriously,  Ash had to be the first customer to complain about having a total that was too small.  But it wasn't like Hiro had lied.  It was easy enough for him to mentally calculate the addition of the prices and with the discount and tax percentages and confirm the system's numbers were exactly what his aunt had intended.  Therefore,  Ash's total was correct.  Ignoring the other boy's obvious displeasure,  he accepted the wrinkled twenty,  input the cash paid amount on the register,  and swapped the bill for the necessary change.  Normal customer service practice would dictate holding out the change for the customer to take,  but having served Ash a few times now,  Hiro knew better.  Conveniently,  the older teen hadn't taken his order yet,  so he snatched the bag back first.  He deftly whipped open an extra pastry sleeve,  dumped the coins and bills into it,  and deposited the whole thing into the bag containing the actual order.  The bag was then slid unceremoniously back across the counter.   “  Would you like a receipt ?  ”

“We'd be lost without your help, Hamada-kun!” Before the recently demoted special grade sorcerer even begins to think about his own desires and where to most effectively offer their talents, he takes a moment to marvel at Hiro's natural leadership. Leave it to Hamada-kun to rise up to the challenge! Yuuta has to do her best to catch up and regain the rank of special grade alongside the financial benefits, for the sake of his friends who always gave it their all, even when it came to the most unscrupulous of jobs who would even hire Panda-kun. “Did you ask everyone else what they want to do yet? I'll take the one with less hands on deck!” The job everyone wants to do the least, Yuuta means. The role no one wants to fill is no burden to him if it meant everyone else was happy. Before a childhood spent carefree and happy could slip away with the summer and ruthless obligation could seize their spirit as more curses came with the heat, the memory of strawberry smoothies and sleepovers finds Yuuta who changes course and steers away from isolation. “I can take the orders and leave engineering the drinks to you. The strawberry smoothies you make are really good!”

            “  Are you sure ?  ”   As the unofficial leader of this team,  he had tried to give Yuuta an easy out to avoid direct customer interactions,  knowing his friend's personality.  Toge was already on drink duty by default given his limited communication,  and Panda's mascot-like appearance was best suited for drumming up interest outside where it wouldn't be on the receiving end of any awkward questions.  Out of the three left,  Hiro would've put himself and Maki on the registers,  and put Yuuta with Toge in the back.  Maki wasn't any more experienced in this than Yuuta,  but she had thick skin.  Her disposition better suited the task,  though they might have to stop her from throttling a patron over the counter for being rude or sexist  (even if a person like that would deserve the beating,  they all needed this job).  Maybe in that regard,  Yuuta would work well to temper her;  as Panda would say,  she did seem to be softer around them.  And he could see how learning how to make all the drinks on the spot under pressure would be intimidating.  In the end,  he decided to concur.   “  Okay, then you're with Maki.  ”

            “  I'll make you one now before we open.  You'll probably want something to drink with all the talking you'll be doing anyway.  I think the manager said he left a paper somewhere with how to use their system,  so maybe try ringing it up to see if it's helpful at all ?  ”

            “  Your total is $10.38.  Pickup will be to your right,  ”   he reported dutifully.  He had added a discount,  but he wouldn't be telling Ash that.  And if the other boy asked,  Hiro would deny it anyway.  The price was correct:  it was how much his aunt wanted to charge for this transaction.

            “  I'm not helping you on this case if all you're going to talk about is Ranpo.  ”   It was a somewhat empty threat;  the Agency respected his academic endeavors and didn't ask for his help unless his expertise was truly required.  Thus,  he would be tagging along regardless,  but Hiro had to make it clear that he wasn't in the mood to listen to Dazai's bottomless praises for a man who wasn't even here.

            “  Okay,  I've done both before,  so what would you rather do ?  Taking orders at the register or making drinks ?  ”   Of course this sketchy job had given them basically no training before scheduling them alone.  It wasn't a problem for Hiro who grew up helping out his aunt,  so he'd try to help his classmate out as much as he could.

            “  Lucky there were two left !  I've been wanting this one since it was announced,  so I'm glad I'll get to start building right away instead of starting with modeling and printing the parts !  ”   Hiro said the last part as if it obviously and naturally followed that if he didn't get a kit,  he would make his own from scratch.  Which he would,  but he did enough 3D modeling and printing for his other projects, so for this hobby he definitely preferred to just start with the pre-made kit.
