can i say something
many people give the nfl a lot of shit for the injury and concussion rates but like. the nhl has a very comparable rate of injury and concussion and doesnāt acknowledge it + has a much worse culture around it. the nfl is by no means perfect but they are working to improve the gear to help players (see the guardian helmets for example, as well as helmet designs per position) meanwhile the nhl doesnāt seem to give a fuck about itās playersā safety at all as weāve seen time and again.
now think very carefully about why the nfl may be viewed as more violent and injurious as a sport..
I fully agree 1000% with this message, but the NFL deserves absolutely no credit for caring about players safety. They very publicly denied the existence of CTE for over a decade and did a lot of work to discredit/silence Dr. Omalu, the doctor who discovered CTE in the early 2000s. It wasnāt until the movie where will smith played him came out in 2015, when it became a mainstream news discussion, that the NFL acknowledged the existence of CTE for the first time publicly. And this was only after Goodell was forced to testify in front of congress.
They donāt care about players they were just forced into a corner and had to do something. Without a doubt in my mind they wouldāve continued to ignore it if it hadnāt become a hot topic. If anything the players union deserves the credit.
Aanya specifically said "the NFL is by no means perfect". so what's all this for then?
and the NFL absolutely deserves SOME credit for caring about player safety. you're being disingenuous when you say they deserve none. yes, you're correct that they didn't do anything about CTE and concussions until ~2015 but there's so much more to player safety than concussions. and EVEN SO, wrt concussions, they've invested money and research into better helmet designs (as Aanya stated), have restructured their concussion protocol, have independent neurologists at every game. they've banned helmet to helmet hits and punish players harsher now for them. this isn't NOTHING, this is work done by the NFL. every season there's some new research about injuries and player safety. it's not NOTHING.

itās the way that shane hollander does matter as representation in fiction but somehow, nick suzuki doesnāt matter as representation in real life. because real life hockey is just some stupid sportsball that only stupid jocks are into, not like our 7/10 6-episode romance show on crave which Impacts Real People And Breaks Barriers And Triumphs Over Expectations š¤š¤š¤ which OBVIIOUSLT Real Life Hockey Player Nick Suz-I Mean āStraight Shane Hollanderā Canāt Do š¤Ŗš¤Ŗš¤Ŗ

the team is built on trust!
they latch onto doby being too emotional because they think its his biggest weakness when in reality its his biggest strengthābut this wouldnāt be the case if his overt emotion was just anger. if doby was just angry, they wouldnāt see it as such a flaw. itās the fact that he cries. when he loses, when he wins. so openly he looks up at the 21000 people cheering for him and blushes, cries and laughs helplessly, moved by the love he receives, unable to hide the love he feels. he is a man incapable of stoicism, and to them, that is a sin against masculinity, a crime against the sport, an immaturity to straighten out and mature out of. but anyone who really watches jakub dobeÅ” play knows, certainly, that the heart on his sleeve is exactly what wins us games.
this is our mouse. fear him
also arpon calling nick the āmost even keeled player iāve ever coveredā and telling a story about nick being used to dudes hitting him after whistles in the OHL playoffs while he played ~30 mins a night but he learned to not react bc it just makes them get angry, which apparently cernak was doing all the first 3 games vs tampa before he stopped bc nick wasnāt reacting ???
