When a fic doesn’t fit my head canons but it’s well-written

Her new Defense professor is a war hero. 

Strong-jawed, slumped shoulders. He looks like he’s constantly just come in from the rain on a lightning-struck night, with his dark trenchcoat, mended many times at the hems, and the slightest tremor of cold in his fingers. His office smells of cherry tobacco, resinous and inviting and dark and sweet, ash scattered uncaringly on the floor around his desk. He catalogues their practicals with sharp eyes, like a snake waiting to strike. He never speaks more than is necessary.

And he looks tired. 

Perhaps the only animated thing about him is the shock of black hair that spills over his forehead in unruly curls, too wild for a comb or even a gentle touch. Not that she is thinking about touches, gentle or otherwise.

He is, quite possibly, the youngest Defense professor they’ve ever had.

{♥} BAND AU (Note: Open supernatural society. Melting pot: banshees, weres, humans, etc.): Lyd is the lead vocalist & a writer for Banshee Queen. The band is leaving on tour in a couple months and Stiles, lead guitarist, is taking paternity leave to be with Derek and their twins, but he has his tour replacement, Pete Hale, ready.

~ Prologue ~

“I’ve got a guy, just as much skill and presence, set to come in to meet with you guys, okay? He’s crazy good and gets what we’re doing. He’s snarky, focused, and a bit…sassy–but he’s fine with getting it thrown right back at him.”

“Sounds like he’ll fit in.” Lyd clapped Stiles on his shoulders and gripped firmly. “Stiles, you don’t have to convince us. We’ll see him, his work will prove himself, and, hopefully, we’ll gel. Now go save Derek from the twins.”

“Sometimes he lurks? Or maybe he just moves very quietly. Yeah. Seriously, that’s gotta be a Hale trait. Oh, okay,” Stiles took a breath and bit his lip, reading his watch, “yeah. It’s cutting close to another feeding time.”

“Hale?”  

“Peter. Pete Hale, actually. He prefers Pete,” Stiles admitted, shrugging a shoulder. “I call him Peter to give him shit. He’s putty around the twins though. You should see it. Super freaky.” Stiles shook his head, yawning. “Where was I? Yes, he’s Derek’s uncle, BUT I wouldn’t suggest him if he weren’t legit and pretty perfect for our situation.”

“Alright, alright. We’ll talk later and set up a meeting during a rehearsal day. We can test each other out. Now go! We love you, bye, and - what the fuck - stop sharing those scary parenting pictures, damn it. Cute stuff only.”

Lyd turned Stiles and gently pushed him toward an exit door, curious and willing for Peter–Pete Hale to be every bit as advertised.
