Summary:
Since they were kids, the annual summer venture to The Washington Lodge was almost as routine as Christmas and Thanksgiving, just less planned. It was the group's way to stay in touch while school was out, and now that they were adults, it was one of the few guaranteed times throughout the year they would see everyone in one spot. Thankfully the group hadn’t distanced themselves yet, they had just finished their first year of college.

Woah woah woah woah woah ..... say less. The underrepresentation of this ship in the fandom is cray cray so here are some more headcanons I have for them!!
My overall opinion, they are so lovely and have so much potential 🥺 I am simply a sucker for best friends to lovers and I'm sold each and every time it is fed to me. That being said, the complexity of Sam's feelings for the Washingtons is my personal special interest...
I like to think that some of these confusing feelings she held for her best friend may have transferred over to that friend's older brother following her disappearance.... thus birthing Josh/Sam.
That is a completely different post, none the less I thought I'd mention it here 👀
These hcs will be about the prologue and leading up to the trip where the prank happened.... mayhaps gonna lead into another headcanon post I'm working on so stay tuned!!

God Hannah was SO excited for this trip. There wasn't anything especially out of the ordinary about plans for the gathering, but she just had this feeling in her gut. Something big was going to happen. It filled her with anticipation.
She couldn't contain her giddiness and constantly texted Sam about her excitement leading up to the day. It made Sam feel a bit better about the upcoming get-together.
Sam had been having some anxiety surrounding the latest trip. She had started to notice some... red flags, let's say; amongst some of the people in her friend group and worried about spending a weekend with them and the trouble that could arise.
She wouldn't tell Hannah these concerns, especially seeing her excitement at the mere mention of the get-together her and her siblings were planning. Hannah already struggled a bit in these larger social situations and seeing her light up at the prospect of one was a positive thing in Sam's mind.
Of course, 90% of the discussions about Hannah's excitement centered around Mike's presence and the things she hoped she would get to do with Mike....
Sam tried so very hard to shove a lot of those anxious heartache feelings away. She did not want to find out where they were coming from. Let alone threaten to entertain them.
She tried drawing and sketching the group to ease her nerves when simply partaking in the substances brought to the party wasn't enough to take her mind off things.
The first portrait she drew from the group was Hannah's
She couldn't seem to get Hannah off her mind that night.... despite all of the shenanigans and craziness all around from everyone
The combination of nerves and seeking a distraction got Sam thoroughly sauced and out of it, keeping her glued to her sketchbook until she started noticing things happening around her... whispers and glances in her direction...
She finally picked up on the group's plan to pull some kind of "prank", catching a sly remark from Emily and Jess as they discussed the contents of their written note.
Sam's hazy mind eventually pieced together who their intended target was, trying to sort out her jumbled thoughts...

That being said, here are some self-indulgent platonic headcannons about the early stages of their friendship….
They met in middle school early on, probably in 6th grade.
Hannah and Beth were popular in school, in the sense that everyone knew who they were (due to their parent's notoriety/fame), but they tended to keep to themselves
Sam was a quiet kid who didn't really have friends to speak of outside of the hallway acquaintances here and there
They met at lunch period towards the beginning of the school year when they were assigned tables
Sam was wearing a Justice esc. T-shirt with a sparkly horse graphic and Hannah couldn't help but instantly NEED to gush over the design.
Yes they were all 3 horse girls
They also bonded over not being fans of the school lunch, Sam in the early stages of her decision to become vegan started being unable to stomach the thought of meat and Hannah simply hated the slop-like appearance of the sloppy joes being served that day.
Beth may or may not have called them picky and offered to eat their leftovers
From then on Sam was invited over to the Washington’s nearly every other weekend
Also introducing Sam to Josh and Chris as their sleepovers tended to overlap
Sam got to go horseback riding for the first time when Hannah found out she had never gotten to and offered to take her to their family's rented stable one day
There is a photo of the day in question with Sam riding the sisters' shared horse and Hannah holding the lead, both with the biggest smiles on their faces, hung up on the Washington’s fridge
