Any Matt and Ashley headcanons for when they were kids?
Honestly I’m heavily inspired by Trick r Treat, specifically Rhonda and Schrader.
But…
Matt approached her first. She was quiet, and though he could usually keep up with the other kids it felt like it didn’t ever end or slow down with them, so he gravitated toward this girl who was always ill and missing class — so much so that when he first saw her he thought she was new to his school. She was cute too but he didn’t really wanna dwell on that…
Ashley for her part liked him. His excitement was infectious and it just felt good to look forward to something for once. Before now the most she had going for her were late not marathons of cold case files with her big sister, and sadly for Ashley Kate had a life and didn’t want to hang around Sniffles all day every day. Matt was nice. He wasn’t pushy so when he would plead with her to go along with something she felt more obliged to run with it.
They were about ten years old and then whenever by the time they started seeing each other less.
Matt, his friend Jess, and her friend Emily wanted to scrounge around the woods where the older kids had been partying the night before on Halloween, hoping to find something ‘cool’ left behind. Ashley, having been with the three the night prior really didn’t want to go — she didn’t gel with Matt’s other friends at all and spending more time with them just seemed like an invitation to find reasons to like her even less. But Matt didn’t see the issue and Ashley didn’t want to miss out on time with maybe the only one at school who actually did like her.
They left early enough that they missed the beginnings of a panic getting stirred up, but, never mind that.
It ended up being the last time they’d hang out until high school. For some reason Ashley felt the need to avoid Matt. Even she couldn’t fully explain why, nor could Matt explain why he was so desperate when reaching out despite getting stonewalled at every turn. Not why despite the events we know to take place later on, Emily and Jess were constantly at one another’s houses for sleepovers with the few nights they weren’t spent getting caught on the homesite one another into the early morning.
Oh yeah so happy childhood HCs
Yeah read more time.
Okay I talk a lot about all the Chrissam stuff Until Dawn should have kept.
But the other scene I don’t get why they didn’t keep was the one where Matt pops Jessica’s shoulder in. I don’t even know if it was filmed because I couldn’t recover the audio, only subtitles.
But he basically notices that her shoulder is dislocated from her fall, and then asks her about a sports team and while she’s thinking of an answer, he puts the shoulder back in, and she screams and he apologizes and tells her it’s going to feel better.
And I think this moment was actually really good characterization for Matt. Poor guy kinda spends a long chunk of the game getting painted as useless by Emily. So it’s kind of cool to see him help Jess using something he may understand because of his sports background. I can kind of imagine him seeing dislocations a lot from football games/practices. It’s sweet.
🫣 How do you, Queenie, first of her names, breaker of hearts, monger of tears, rarepair dealer—suppose Matt and Ashley’s friendship first took off?
They would find out later - at lunchtime, to be specific (one of Ashley's favorite new spelling words) - that "new" could mean any number of very, very different things.
For Matt, "new" meant he was supposed to go to the school just down the street from his house, but for a bunch of reasons his parents couldn't get him to understand, he was actually going to be starting third grade at the school across town - the one past the park and the pizza place, which meant he had to get up earlier, eat his breakfast faster, and never, ever miss the bus.
For Ashley, "new" meant moving (again), not just across town but at least three different states (again); and while her mom promised it would be the last time (again), and that it was for the best (again), and maybe this time the two of them could settle long enough to start making friends (again), she had her doubts. Again.
But both of them, as it turned out, were "new" in the same way that it applied to the bus - the big step up and the bigger step in, somehow made bigger and harder by the endless chug of exhaust making their eyes water - something that maybe wasn't so bad, in the grand scheme of things.
Before he said hello or even thought to give her his name, Matt took Ashley's hand and smiled, and neither one of them had to worry about sitting next to a stranger ever again.
hey queenie!! long time no see!! how’ve you been, diva? figured i’d pop this in the old inbox for the next six sentence weekend, whenever that might be:
mattash being bffsies or crashley being cuties 😌
"Brought you something," he heard from just above and to the left, and without having to look, his brain filled the gaps enough to raise his hand just in time for her to slot the thermos into it. "Give it a sec, though, I think I made it too hot...totally scorched my tongue."
When Ashley sat, making a little 'oof!' sound as she joined him on the steps, Matt smiled her way before glancing down at the steam pouring out of the thermos's mouth, thinking to himself that he was pretty lucky, all told. Last he checked, everyone else was still in the dining room, half playing drinking games and half fighting, the altitude and the general lack of sleep wreaking havoc on their (already touchy) tempers.
"Extra marshmallows, I hope?" he teased, bringing the cocoa up to his face so he could better smell it.
"Um, duh," she joked back, feigning insult, "you act like I don't know you or something;" but the end of the word went jagged, spiking into a high-pitched squeal as he wrapped his arm around her shoulders and pulled her in close for a hug, the two of them happily watching the sun set over snowy Blackwood Pines.
