She paused in the middle of chopping up the chives, and turned, slowly, ears straining to hear his voice. Once it was clear he was done speaking, she set the knife down.
"You okay there?" she asked, concerned.
The sound of her chopping stopped, but he didn't look up, rather focused on staring at his own hands.
"--I'm fine," he replied, still looking down. A meal could not hurt, and then she would leave. No English lesson today. "Tch. I'm tired. Can you hurry it up?"
