ART (uncorked) this Thusday, June 16 from 6-9pm!
ART (uncorked) is a celebration of Columbia’s local art scene combined with a premium FREE wine tasting. Every third Thursday of the month, SakiTumi hosts a selected local artist to showcase their work for the month. At each opening, there is a premium wine tasting and light hors d’oeuvres from 6-8pm!
This month, we will be showcasing the works of Ryan McEwen. McEwen was born in Savannah, Georgia in 1983. He still vividly remembers his first piece of art as a young child – a drawing of Indiana Jones. His art career officially began in 3rd grade when he sold his first drawing to a classmate for 25¢. With the support and encouragement of family and friends, Ryan continued to hone in on his craft throughout grade school. During this time, drawing evolved from a hobby and became an inherent necessity for Ryan. In eighth grade, he attended a magnet art school, where he began to understand and practice the techniques that would further advance his abilities. Before long, he began to paint. Working primarily with acrylic on canvas, his works evolved from gifts to commissions.
Over the years, McEwen’s career has been influenced by a broad range of artists, movements and time periods. From the Realism and Decorative works from artists like William-Adolphe Bourguereau and Alphose Mucha to Surrealism and Cubism works from well-known artists such as Salvador Dali and MC Escher. Andy Warhol’s Pop Art movement and David Walker’s street art have also influenced his hand along the way.
Through his art, McEwen finds the beauty in everyday objects and attempts to capture them, or tweak them to their ultimate aesthetic potential.
