do you think soren should have realized kludd was far too gone when eglantine said he was the one who gave her to allomere?

(I’m assuming we’re talking about the movie)

I think it’s complicated. We need to keep in mind that we (as an audience) got to see scenes of Kludd thriving and being happy as a Pure One and that Soren didn’t. The only time they saw each other after they were separated when they first arrived was when Soren and Gylfie were fleeing. Soren never got to see Kludd’s darker side, the worst he had seen of his brother was that Kludd didn’t want to join him as picker, which I think Soren found understandable and wrote off. Soren is very forgiving, to his brother in particular, so I think he assumed that Kludd didn’t leave with them when they were escaping because he was scared or couldn’t fly well enough yet and that he only acted as if he didn’t want to leave because he wanted to stay safe if he remained with the Pure Ones.

It’s unclear exactly how much time had passed between Soren and Gylfie fleeing St. Aggie and the big battle at the end, but I’m assuming it was at least a few months (I’d say six), and since time makes memories more wistful, I’d say Soren maintained that positive attitude toward Kludd. They also grew up together and have to have had good times together too, which definitely prettied Soren’s view of his brother.

When the reveal of Kludd’s affiliations came to light, Soren was going through an emotional whirlwind: he finds out his little sister has been kidnapped and abused in the same way he almost was, he gets told it was their brother that had a hand in her abduction, THEN he and his friends have to save every competent adult they know because the Big Mission that all of them had gone on turned out to be a trap. All that in the span of maybe four minutes.

Since he got such a short time to process what Eglantine told him, I think (even though he was wrong) it’s pretty understandable for him to still be in denial of it all and want to hear Kludd’s side of the story, thinking it must all be a misunderstanding.
