Gabriel wrapped his arms around Salem and smiled at the little noise he made. “I have no idea who Blink 182 are, but I’m sure there probably is.” The fact that he knew that there was a Taylor Swift song about being 22 was more than enough pop culture knowledge for him. “Do you want coffee?”

Salem laughed softly, taking one of Gabriel’s hands and putting it in his hair. “What, you didn’t have an emo phase?” He sung a few lines of the song quietly, amusing himself. “Do I have to get up for coffee?”

Gabriel laughed at Salem and allowed himself to be pulled into bed. “Morning princess.” He kissed his cheek and cuddled up next to him in bed. “Happy birthday.”

Gabriel sat on the edge of the bed and gently shook Salem awake. He’d stayed the night, managing to sleep in favour of being awake for his boyfriend’s birthday, and he’d woken up a couple of hours earlier to get things ready. There were flowers on his bedside table - Salem’s favourite, he’d asked a few weeks previously - and both coffee and a few small presents sat next to them. Gabriel had waited until a Salem approved time to wake him up, and didn’t even bother making him breakfast, although it’d be more like lunch at that point. He was determined to make Salem’s birthday perfect. Gabriel gently shook him until he woke up.

Salem got into the passenger side of the car, resisting the urge to sulk about not being able to take the motorcycle. “But motorcycles mean lots of leather and sitting really close to you. You can’t deny the appeal there.”

He examined the camera, not really having seen a disposable one before and not understanding the point. “Aquarium?” He knew that secret shops probably meant something different to Gabriel than to Natalia, but the idea still seemed a bit scary.

Gabriel rolled his eyes at Salem. He wasn’t going to admit that the idea of riding a motorcycle terrified him, but it did; even more so if Salem had anything to do with it. “Need I remind you that your last hospital trip was because of a motorcycle accident? No amount of leather and sitting close together makes up for certain death.”

He had assumed the Aquarium would be Salem’s first choice. After visiting one together in Russia, Gabriel had been meaning to take him again - if only because he wanted to watch Salem get all excited over the fish again. He started the car and drove towards the aquarium. “Before you even start, you’re not paying for anything today. I already pre paid everything I could anyway.”

Salem reached for Gabriel’s hand, annoyed that the car meant he couldn’t cuddle closer. The weather was getting colder, providing him with an excellent excuse for more oversized sweaters and cuddling. Honestly, he was surprised he’d managed to survive a Boston summer. “I only hurt my arm, I was fine. If you learned to drive a motorcycle, you wouldn’t have to deal with me driving. Or we could go on rides together.”

He pouted, running his hand through his hair. “You were plotting. That’s mean.”

Gabriel let his hand be pushed away and grabbed Salem’s, lacing their fingers together. “I would say that no matter what, but only because it’s true no matter what.” He started pulling Salem towards the door. There was a long list of things to do and places to go, so he didn’t want to waste too much time standing around. “And no, you’re not driving. I spent all morning planning this, you’re not killing us until we’re done.”

He leaned over to the back seat and fished around in a plastic bag for a second, retrieving a couple of disposable cameras. He handed one to Salem, not bothering to explain, and put the other in his bag. “Aquarium, old ship, or shop hidden behind a secret door? Your choice.”

“You look good.” Gabriel absently fixed a couple of strands of Salem’s hair. “Let’s go, we’ve got lots to do.”

University had started and Gabriel was busier than ever, and whilst that was exactly what he’d wanted, he missed Salem like crazy. There was never enough time to get everything done and he had barely seen his boyfriend since the beginning of term. Gabriel knew that Salem wasn’t any happier about it than he was. Which led them to Saturday morning, when Gabriel decided that he was going to go insane if he didn’t put the books down and spend some time with Salem. It took him awhile to come up with a decent date idea - romance had never been his forte - but once he had something perfect (because everything had to be perfect with him) he sent Salem a text making sure he’d be free that afternoon. He was, so Gabriel told him he’d pick him up after lunch. Sometime around half twelve, Gabriel knocked on Salem’s door and let himself into the house. “You ready?”

Gabriel didn’t spend much of the night in bed. It seemed unlikely that Salem would wake up, so he ventured from room to room, thankful that there was so much more to do at Salem’s house in comparison to his own apartment.  Swimming at midnight was something he could get used to. Gabriel napped for an hour on Salem’s couch, drank a mug of coffee, made himself breakfast, and then made another cup of coffee and went back to Salem’s bedroom to see if he was awake. He smiled to himself when he saw that Salem was up. “Morning.”

Salem buried himself under the blankets in response, mumbling something in Russian. He was pretty sure he would prefer to be dead at this point. “Слишком громко.”

Gabriel was too tired for Russian. He sat on the bed and took a long sip of his coffee. “Still sick?”

Salem put his pillow over his head, trying to get rid of the light and sound. He figured the answer to that question was obvious enough that it didn’t need a reply.

Gabriel wasn’t sure if there was anything he could do to help. He was probably best left in silence for awhile, so he sat against the headboard and focused on drinking his coffee and staying awake.

Salem appreciated the silence, eventually emerging from under the blankets and moving closer to Gabriel.

Gabriel was half asleep when he felt Salem move. He quickly blinked his eyes open and checked to see if he was okay. He leaned over to kiss Salem’s cheek, not wanting to break the silence.

Salem wasn’t particularly in the mood to be touched, but he decided the kiss was alright. He yawned, curling up a bit.

Gabriel smiled at how adorable Salem managed to be, even while sick. Once he finished drinking his coffee, he sat and read one of the books on his phone.

Over time, Salem moved closer to Gabriel until he was cuddling. “You don’t have to stay.”

Gabriel loosely wrapped his arm around Salem. “Course I do.”

Salem made an unhappy noise, moving Gabriel’s arm off of himself. “дурак.” It sounded as fond as Salem was capable of sounding at the moment.

Gabriel didn’t know why he couldn’t have his arm around Salem, but he didn’t question it. “Why am I an idiot?”

Salem yawned, taking a moment to figure out how to explain in English. “Staying here. You’re gonna get sick or I’m gonna yell at you or something.”

Gabriel shrugged. “I don’t get sick, and it’s not like I’ve never yelled at you before. It’s fine.”

Salem shook his head. “Still don’t want to yell at you. I feel too awful to be nice.”

Gabriel shrugged. “Do you want me to go?” He didn’t want to leave, and he’d be a little hurt if Salem asked him to, but he wasn’t going to stay if he didn’t want him there.

Gabriel wasn’t sure if this was just Salems way of asking him to leave or not. “Your idea of taking care of yourself is sleeping and not doing anything else essential. You haven’t eaten in more than 24 hours.”

Salem wasn’t very happy with Gabriel pointing that out, but he couldn’t really argue with it. “It’s just going to get worse if I eat. I’ve been drinking water.”

Gabriel wanted to hug him, but he knew that wouldn’t be appreciated. Salem not wanting physical affection was weird. “Not eating anything at all isn’t going to help either. A little bit of the right sort of food won’t make you feel awful.”

Salem pulled the blankets further over his head. “It will. Leave me alone, I’ll eat later.”

Gabriel sighed. “You said that yesterday.”

“What does it matter? I’ve gone longer without eating before, I’ll be fine.” Salem was starting to sound truly irritated. “Leave me alone.”

Gabriel rolled his eyes. “Having gone longer without eating in the past doesn’t mean it’s a healthy thing to do.”

Salem sighed, moving away from Gabriel. “What part of ‘leave me alone’ is so hard to understand? I’m not going to eat anything right now.”

Gabriel sighed and left the room, deciding that Salem was best left alone. Besides, he had a rabbit that would appreciate his company a lot.

Salem wasn’t very happy with Gabriel pointing that out, but he couldn’t really argue with it. “It’s just going to get worse if I eat. I’ve been drinking water.”

Gabriel wanted to hug him, but he knew that wouldn’t be appreciated. Salem not wanting physical affection was weird. “Not eating anything at all isn’t going to help either. A little bit of the right sort of food won’t make you feel awful.”

Salem pulled the blankets further over his head. “It will. Leave me alone, I’ll eat later.”
