Alaric’s eyes shifted to her blue ones when Sally spoke out loud, himself having to take a deep breath as he felt his eyes water, instantly the back of his hand wiping whatever had managed to form, his fingers scratching his eyes to stop it. It wasn’t like he was ashamed of it, crying, or that she had never seen him cry before. He was transparent with her, even in his weakest moments, himself having cried in his wife’s arms when one of his friends died.
But it wasn’t shame. It was the single realization that she was more broken in that moment than him, and he couldn’t take the luxury of falling apart when he had to hold her together.
He couldn’t cry in front of her, not now. But he wasn’t one to lie to her either. “I did” he said softly with a gentle nod, his hands taking hers in his once again, his fingers gently intertwining with hers as he looked at her. “It was all so sudden I couldn’t really think straight. I truly don’t know how I got here so fast” he admitted, his nerves taking the best of him as he was a walking nervous wreck, which was news coming from the man who was used to have everything under his control and power.
He was also angry that he couldn’t do a single thing to help her ease the pain while sitting there, which was eating him alive slowly. And it was one reason for him to have his eyes so red as he did. “I really, thought the worst” he said, the feeling growing from the deepest spot in his guts as the time passed and the minutes turned into hours while waiting sat in a room full of strangers without an answer. His hand had to wipe out whatever threatened to fall from his eyes, taking a deep breath as Alaric reminded himself that he was indeed in the same room as Sally and that she was alive.
“I’m just so glad you’re okay” he said finally after taking another deep breath, himself leaning a little closer to her, just to press a gentle kiss on her forehead before he sat down once again on the chair. His hand never letting go of hers, as he sat there looking at her. “I know it will be a long time before you leave this place” he started, knowing she hated the idea of having to stay in a hospital, “But I won’t leave you until you are allowed to leave. I’m not moving from here” he said before pressing his lips against the knuckles of her hand.
“Even if that means that I will have to figure out ways to entertain you while you are here” he said as a gentle smile formed on his face, almost hiding behind their tanged hands.
Sally watched as Alaric explained himself, her heart feeling as if it was breaking in the process. She could see behind the tired fog of her sight that his eyes were beginning to redden again a new set of tears pooling on the rim of his eyes. If it weren’t for the fact that she was currently being pumped up with pain medications that made her lethargic and her head was tremendously pounding, she probably would’ve started crying too.
But she remembered promising the doctor as well that she’ll keep her hear rate calm and one couldn’t do that if crying was involved.
The ginger just hated seeing Alaric like that, so broken and worried. He looked awfully distraught and that made her chest tight. She was so use to seeing her husband being so kept together, watching his ego grow and more each day, and now this part of him was so heart-breaking to see. It hurt. “I’m so sorry.” She whispered her words because she hardly had the strength to speak in a normal pitch voice. Speaking words was proving far too hard of a task.
But how she wished that she could if only to take that anguish look from his face. Sally didn’t want him to worry so much about her anymore. Of course she knew that it all looked bad... She had tons of stitches, was hooked up to IV fluids and even antibiotics left and right and she didn’t even want to look at the surgical bandage that wrapped around her abdomen. That was all enough to make anyone worried and now her voice was only making matters worse, but she was so tired, even her eyes felt heavy to her.
“I never meant to end up here... and I’m so sorry you had to go through all of that, Alaric. I would never want that for you. I hate seeing you like this....” When his hand returned back into hers, she gave it a soft little squeeze of affection. It wasn’t much, but it was the best she could do, and when he kissed her forehead a small smile fell over her lips. She loved him, she really did and him being so close to her was all she needed at the moment.
“You’ll have to leave though to grab some clothes... and for work—” She paused a moment there. Work, the Sidera were kind of the reason why she was in this mess of a situation now that she remembered the accident clearly, but she couldn’t exactly go and tell Alaric that.... not after everything he was going through already, so Sally just continued on speaking. “I’m sure I’ll be the source of entertainment. Once I’m a little more energized, I’ll be feeling the pain medication and we both know how that went the last time.”
