College Freshman Stabbed to Death After Seeing Three Young Women Being Groped and Stepping in to Help

With final exams on the horizon, Donnell Marcus Phelps was all set to finish his freshman year at Fort Valley State University in Georgia.

The 19-year-old from Marshallville had been studying agricultural engineering technology but also found time to manage the university’s tennis team.

 And help those in need. 

Late Tuesday afternoon he witnessed a man harassing three young ladies. The man was touching these girls in a very inappropriate way, so he decided to step in. However, he was forced to bring fists to a knife fight.

An autopsy showed Phelps was stabbed four times in the upper torso with a pocket knife with a 3.5-inch blade.

“Words cannot describe the pain that we all feel in the Fort Valley State community,” university President Paul Jones said at news conference, offering condolences to Phelps’ family, friends, students and the entire community.

Johnson described Phelps as selfless: “He always gave us hugs, and he’d always check up on us,” she added to the Telegraph.

Donnell Phelps died a hero. His Mom did an incredible job raising an amazing person. God bless this young man for his sacrificial act of bravery. His life matters.

 RIP Donnell Phelps.

#firstworldproblems

Whilst mindlessly killing time on Instagram, I saw a post and froze. My friend was engaging in an activity that was so very definitive of the the conforming non-conformist culture of Los Angeles. It was was progressively trendy, fad-driven, and superficial. Dread dripped up my back and to the back of my throat, like a bad nosebleed. I would be back in America soon, Los Angeles to be exact, buying into this manufactured lifestyle. It’s not like I’m saving the world or living in the Himalayas here on the other side of the globe, but the idea of going back to a life I don’t feel ready to go back to...is quite foreboding. I’m not ready....but, I have to keep pushing forward.

I’m only going back for the people.

But, gawd. LA....you’ve never looked more unappealing.

Conflicted

Someone asked what inspires me. 

My response? Books, Films, Music, & the Stories and Experiences of other people.

The aforementioned someone has inspired me in a weirdly odd way. He is someone I don’t connect with on a personal level, but on an intellectual level. I admire his thoughts and beliefs...but am conflicted with his aspirations.

He feels complacent traveling the world, learning of other cultures, making music that may not reach an appreciative audience (because it rarely leaves his bedroom and his friends apparently don’t even like it), and then eventually settling down in a random, quiet, and peaceful Baltic country. Spending his days biking, reading, and drinking lots of tea....somewhere in a small cottage I reckon. 

For someone filled with confidence, educated intellect, and vibrant personal opinions on world issues...I was surprised the journey and end game were so...mild? passive?

Did I want that for myself? Being content with knowledge and world exposure? Not really....but did I want what someone like Nate Brown wanted (bettering his time on earth through technology and creativity)? Did I want material success? Corporate success? Multiple assets in this capitalist country I eventually want to settle down in? Not that either. I don’t want fame. I want to work behind the scenes. I want to travel liberally, but I don’t want to live abroad. I want to be more knowledgeable about the current issues plaguing our downtrodden society, but I don’t want to lack-action. I am all for bettering the world today...but, not for the purpose of benefiting the temporary time I have left. I’d rather better the world today, so that it lays a foundation for the future. 

I can’t change who I am. Just have to embrace it. But, wow it’s taking a long time.

Ryan Hemsworth @ Cakeshop in Seoul, South Korea

One of the most exhilarating shows I’ve been to in several years! Such a respectful dude with in surmountable energy. His set was almost 3 hours long…of HEAVEN. Every song that I wanted to hear was played and TURNT UP. Everything from Every Square Inch, Snow in Newark, One For Me, (my favorite new release) From Grace, and remixes of Blink 182 (from his remix mixtape), Neon Bunny, and Big Bang. Neon Bunny and Big Bang are Korean artists currently active and widely popular in the indie and mainstream scene, respectively. But, just the fact Ryan Hemsworth took the time to remix Korean songs he probably had to research in order to know, shows the awesome effort and care he took in catering towards his Korean fans. Mind you, these were not the only artists he remixed…but, these artists are personal favorites of mine and they were chopped and screwed into DOPE tracks. UGH. SO MUCH RESPECT FOR HIM. MOST international artists that go to foreign countries tend to be very ignorant of the culture, unwilling to learn about the country, and unlikely to interact with the fans. Ryan Hemsworth’s efforts were not unnoticed or in vain. 

The reason I stress this issue of respect is because I went to a TUXEDO (Mayer Hawthorne X Jake One) show  last month and was completely crushed. I love this duo and love their funk, but their pretentious attitudes and lack of interest in their Korean audience left a nasty aftertaste. I wanted my money back. They would make snide comments undermining the Korean audience’s knowledge of funk music (just because Koreans can’t speak English doesn’t mean they lack knowledge of the origins of funk, nor does it mean they don’t respect funk…music transcends language) and they were SO patronizing. The opening acts the legendary DJ SOULSCAPE, XIN SEHA and THE TOWN, & GLEN CHECK were 200times better than Tuxedo. It also sucks that their set was not live and they only played 50% of their songs (on the turntable).

Dear RYAN HEMSWORTH,

Your music is forever the aphrodisiac of my ears. I wish it would be earwax I could stash in the crevices of my eardrums, forever. Thanks for being a stand-up human being. I admire you even more and Korea loves you. PLEASE RELEASE THOSE BIG BANG AND NEON BUNNY REMIXES! <3 Can’t wait to see your show again.
