STEFAN'S CANON RELATIONSHIPS, FT. CAROLINE FORBES.
this dynamic headcanon was requested by : @toxicbloodstreams ! i will feature certain aspects that pertain specifically to @forbaes as she's been my main caroline since 2017 !
when stefan and caroline meet in season one, he's some what put off by her. she comes on strong given he's the new foreigner in town, he's gorgeous and wasn't here before. she wanted him, wanted his attention, even though he didn't want it and was focused on getting to know elena. eventually, he has to tell her that him and her are never going to happen. stefan isn't usually direct or forward like that when it comes to turning people down but caroline was very ... let's say persistent in wanting him. but she took it with pride and stopped pining after him once he told her.
she then starts to " date " damon, which stefan quickly put together that his brother was absolutely compelling her. he wasn't sure exactly sure why damon was messing with caroline but he knew he had to try and figure out a way to get him to stop. if not from him then from her. needless to say, he was concerned for her safety and even tried to get her to tell him what was going on. but she tells him she can't, she doesn't know why but she can't. fast forward to a founders party, stefan ends up spiking caroline's drink with vervain, knowing damon would eventually feed from her and it would harm him. at the party, damon eventually leads caroline outside to feed from her and threaten her while trying to get his necklace back from bonnie via caroline. he ends up drinking from her and hurting her, luckily the vervain worked and stefan was able to get damon away from caroline. elena ends up taking care of her.
season two starts with caroline becoming a new vampire, damon is set on wanting to kill caroline, thinking she won't be able to survive as a vampire. stefan and elena are determined to not let this happen. after caroline accidentally kills someone, stefan helps her get through it. he reminds her that she's strong and she can handle it. he reassures her that everything will be okay. after this moment is when we see their dynamic shift into being closer friends.
with stefan's help, caroline becomes excellent at being a vampire. he goes as far as to say she may be better at control than he is, she is the ideal vampire. caroline starts to remind stefan of his late best friend, lexi. lexi was the most important person in his life next to his brother, after she died he was so sure he'd never find a friend like her again. but slowly, caroline becomes his best friend. caroline is the one person who he goes to when he feels like he's on the verge of losing control, she becomes a sort of sponsor to him. she is always there for him when he needs her and vice versa. caroline is the person he can lean on, she's the person he knows will always be there for him no matter what. their relationship grows into one of the best ( in my opinion ) friendships on the show.
season six is the first time we see the two not on speaking terms, on his end. when stefan moved to georgia, he left everyone in mystic falls behind, including her. he ignored calls, texts and everything in between. he wanted nothing to do with anyone from MF because it reminded him of damon, who he presumed was dead. stefan didn't plan on ghosting but he couldn't handle it so it resulted in him ghosting even caroline. when they finally talk, she's of course, angry at him ( as she should be ) and they start to have a strained friendship when he returns to mystic falls. eventually it gets repaired, though it takes a lot for her to forgive him.
the one difference i have from canon when it comes to them is i have them as strictly friends. i cherish their friendship wildly and couldn't see them progressing into something more. the chemistry between them always felt awkward and semi - forced to me in a romantic sense. their chemistry as friends is extremely well done to me and i just don't see them clicking as anything more than best friends. but, she will always be someone he considers very important in his life. when she has the twins, stefan cares for them as if they were his nieces.
when it comes to @forbaes ' caroline, their dynamic is pretty close to canon, they are the best of bestest friends. they bicker, she teases him, she annoys him. he loosens up around her, he goes to her for advice as well as gift advice cause he sucks at picking out gifts lmao. and in a certain verse, caroline one day shows up at the boarding house with a god damn golden retriever puppy. without giving him the choice, she makes him co - parent this puppy with her, who they name pooh - bear. at first he's against it, taking care of a puppy ? neither have the time. but stefan ends up loving this dog more than anything, he stays at the boarding house most nights because liz did NOT want caroline to bring a dog into their home. sometimes pooh - bear stays at the forbes house, usually when liz is working nights. the two are the best puppy parents to this sweet pup, taking turns with him and eventually, she surprises him with a second golden pup, who they name honey. and now they have two, who both bother stefan's cat.
in caroline and stefan's the hundred verses and the summer i turned pretty verses, they are still best friends and connected in both those verses. i could ramble about those too but this is already hella long so i'll end it here. anywho, caroline is and will always be stefan's best friend.

why yes, i do think itβs funny that tvd vampires eat and drink human food. like wdym you need blood to survive and keep your body functioning but you can also eat a cheeseburger for no real reason other than it still tastes delightful, maybe even better with vampire senses. wdym stefan eats everything he cooks even though heβs never hungry for food or thirsty for a drink and just does it to feel some normalcy. wdym he drinks coffee to regulate body temperature and alcohol for fun even though it takes a loooot to get a vampire drunk π
