would y'all happen to know of any databases/collections of photos or art references of people with facial differences? maybe in the vein of FatPhotoRef (a website with self-submitted pose references with fat models)?

I'm a learning visual artist and I've found one of the best ways for me to hone some aspect of drawing is to do timed sketches from photo references. I'm going to focus on facial expression soonish and want to cover people with various facial differences as well as the typically non-facial-difference-having models on mainstream reference sites. Any resources would be appreciated--even just non-art-focused websites with lots of neutral/positive photos of people with facial differences that I can sketch!

Hello!

The closest one to what you describe is probably Positive Exposure, which aims to photograph and portray all kinds of disabled people (not just visibly disabled) in a less medicalized/dehumanizing way. If you know which conditions cause facial differences then you can go through their albums and pick some of them out - there's a ton of them. The one I linked goes to their ichthyosis shoot.

Here are some other photo resources I do know of, but just be aware they might be underwhelming for what you're looking for;

Portrait Positive - focuses on women with facial and bodily differences;

HOW DO YOU C ME NOW? - focuses on people with large birthmarks;

Here I Am - focuses on adults and seniors with Down Syndrome;

About Face - focuses on people with various kinds of facial paralysis, mostly Bell's palsy

something I want to say as a personal statement, speaking for me, Shelby Donahue:

It always troubles me when people talk about trans women (like Meagan and Autumn Hill, my partners who I talk to every day) in men's prisons, describing them as "rape concentration camps" and emphasizing the sexual violence there. Both Meagan and Autumn Hill have told me, explicitly, that the vast majority of their fellow prisoners respect them and respect their gender, and while some prisoners have been threatening (particularly to Meagan), that the violence against them has primarily come from the institutional systems of the guards, wardens, etc. I know this in part because of their actions: Meagan and Autumn Hill have consistently helped their fellow prisoners, with little things like getting artwork to help a prisoner draw a birthday card for his child, or bigger things like helping someone get back in contact with their family. And a lot of prisoners have been supportive to Meagan and Autumn Hill, especially when they know about the Prairieland case. They make snacks to share, trade books, and comfort Meagan when she's feeling particularly sad.

I say all this for two reasons. The first is that prisoners are not all rapists or bigots, and in fact many of them are not even guilty of the crimes they're arrested for. They're an oppressed class of people, even the worst of them, and they deserve to be understood as individuals, not a nameless and faceless mass of violent threats. And, as individuals, a lot of them have been good comrades to Meagan and Autumn Hill. I want people to keep that in mind when thinking about prisoners. There's a lot of racial stereotypes and bigotries in the way people think of prisoners in the USA, and we need to unlearn those things and understand prisoners as people, as our equals.

The second reason is that you, and me, and everyone we know may end up in jail, or prison. I think about that a lot - getting raided by the FBI will have that effect on you. If we end up in prison, we have to understand the risks and dangers realistically, without excessive fear or unrealistic optimism. And I think it's important people know the facts about what prison is like, and what prisoners are like. Not everyone is violent in prison - but everyone there is the victim of a lot of violence. There are potential friends and allies everywhere.

I know the matter of improperly drawing poc characters' skintones gets addressed a whole lot as a general topic, but can we please also actually call it out when we see it?

I'm not saying you need to be publicly flogging inexperienced artists for drawing poc's skintone ashy but at least point it out or send an anon ask or literally anything! the amount of times i've seen pale and ashy looking black or brown characters get hundreds of notes, some of which are from mutuals, followers, or big names in the fandom, is genuinely crazy. This is not something you should overlook. I don't care if it doesn't bother you personally (because I KNOW most of you malev fans are white as hell), it's still racist, and your ignorance makes it harder for people of color to point out how racist a piece of art is because you're acting like it's normal or "not that serious" and it makes this fandom feel less safe.

And it's not only artists who need to learn how black or brown skin is supposed to look in art, it's EVERYONE, because you need to know what whitewashed art looks like and be able to call it out when you see it. It is not that hard to NOT reblog art even when you know the character looks pale.

And miss me with that "oh i didn't notice" bs. Start noticing.
