A Style HQ Exclusive with Bee Walker
When I came across Bee Walker for the first time, it was a portrait of her on Instagram. Clad in all black with a full head of dark brown fluffy curls and a touch of rosy red on her lips, she embodied confidence and femininity. She was only a subject but I was curious to know more. So I did what anybody else would do…I creeped the internet for more information.
A photographer and an all round creative with lots of visual projects under her belt, Bee had come into her own. There is something particularly striking about her work. Frame after frame, her photographs open up narratives and reveals insights into the dynamism of her subjects. She has mastered the art of capturing the essence of her subjects whether it’s people or landscapes. For Bee, it’s about perspectives and all the different elements that come together in that moment before the shutter clicks.
Bee and I planned to meet in a cutesy cafe, tucked away somewhere in Midtown Manhattan. As soon as I walk into the cafe, I am greeted with a broad smile I can not miss. The kind that warms up the heart. I immediately feel at ease with her as we exchange pleasantries. “I can’t remember the last time I came to this part of town.” She explains, “I am always shooting in Soho.”
I am eager to uncover what makes her tick. Amidst the loud but groovy music in the background, I resolve to record our chat as I slide my phone over to her side of the table.
Let’s start with growing up and how that has factored into who you are today.
I moved around a lot when I was growing up. I think that really exposed me to a lot of cultures, different types of people and their way of living. If anything, it helped me have a broad outlook on life. With wherever I have lived or who I have been around, I am always aware that there are many different ways to do life and approach situations.

Brazilian beauty queen says she was stripped of her total for being too black
In 2014, Nayara Justino won television channel Globo’s contest to be named Carnival’s Globeleza, a title that comes with a public ad campaign. But when people complained about her skin color, calling her things like “monkey” and “darkie,” the channel stripped her of the title and put a lighter-skinned Globeleza in her place. Of course, the network says they did it for other reasons.
