“There’s nothing you can do about that now.” He reminded the witch. “Don’t dwell on what you did and didn’t do, and what you should have done. You still are the best medium in your coven. I’m sure of it.” The Brit encouraged with a warm smile. He had no idea if she was truly the best one in her coven, but he did know that Samara was very powerful so he really didn’t doubt it for a second. “Exactly. I think hunters are more feared than the supernatural at this point. For good reason.”

She laughed as he encouraged her. It wasn’t completely full of joy, but it was a relief after the piles of stress that had been on her for so long. Samara wiped at her eyes and sniffled quietly. “You’re right. People have even put laws in place to stop them from hunting. But I bet some of them take some... Gross excitement in being taboo. You have to be truly vile to kill somebody because of who they are.”

Ash wrapped his arms around the young witch, pulling her in for a warm hug. As warm as a hug from a vampire could get. He hated seeing her like this. Sam was one of the most kind hearted people that he knew. She didn’t deserve to be this upset. “I had also served him at the bar recently. I had a bad feeling about him there, and didn’t do anything about it either. How were you supposed to know?” He sighed, nuzzling his nose onto the top of her head. “Ya know, I always thought that if I just kept my head down and minded my own business when it came to the supernatural nothing bad would ever happen…” He trailed off because was just so frustrated. 

With his arms around her, she leaned into the hug and returned it easily. He may not have physically been warm, but the act alone made her feel less miserable. “I’m supposed to be the best medium from my coven. I guess, I got so distracted by his sister’s energy... I didn’t focus on the bad energy around him,” Samara said in a quiet tone. When he confessed his frustration, she nodded in agreement. “It came out of nowhere. Who even wants to be a hunter anymore in the 21st century?”

“I don’t mind, everyone pees. It would be more weird if I didn’t need to use the bathroom. I guess. do vampires use the bathroom? I don’t think they would.” He paused, looking up at her. “It’s a park, yeah.”

“Next time I see a vampire, I’m sure they’ll love that to be the first question I ask,” Sam joked as she continued to run her hands through the dog’s fur. “You never know. Some people decide walking their dog around the block is enough. Other’s prefer forest hikes with their pets.”

Nate smiled gently, watching the dogs get excited at the attention. “The dogs always make me feel better, that’s why,” he laughed a little. “Yeah, Nate. Bathroom guy.”

“See, I was trying to leave out exactly what I remembered you for,” she teased before petting the dog closest to her. “Is the park your usual route to take with your dogs?”

Felix blinked. Amused by the young witch. “I am sure your three friends would have said the same thing.” And they all knew how that ended. “We are all alone and that is the truth of life.” Felix was a creature of magic and yet had kept his skeptic status well into his fifth century. He was rather proud of that. 

At the mention of the three, her eyes became downcast, but she didn’t say anything. Instead, she looked over to her bag and wiped a stray tear. “Bit of an optimist there, aren’t you? I prefer to take comfort in the idea that my family is always watching me.”

Ash knew that his friend was struggling with recent news and tragedies in the town, especially since she had such a good heart and just wanted to help. Her magic wasn’t always well received by others, but Ash knew that Samara only meant good. The vampire could remember what it had been like to miss his family. Well, just his mom. He still missed her, but knew that there was never a way he could get her back. Since he was already dead, he couldn’t even see her in whatever happy place there was out there that he was sure she was at now. He approached her slowly, not wanting to startle her. “Sam…” He said softly, sitting down next to her. “it’ll be okay.”

Hearing the all too familiar voice, she paused her melancholy thoughts and looked to her friend. As he sat down, the tears reached her eyes again before she pulled her knees to her chest and hugged him. If there was anyone Samara wanted to see right now, it was Ash. “I made a big mistake,” she whispered as her voice cracked. “I had that... That hunter came to my shop, and I could have stopped him. Instead, I didn’t piece together who he was soon enough and now two people could be dead because of it.” Three if he was counted.

Fliss moved closer tot he young witch she’d met before, tilting her head. “Hey… are you doing okay? It must be tough… being away from home with everything going on here.” 

At the question, she nearly shook her head. However, Samara wasn’t quite ready to admit fully to not being okay. Instead, she shrugged. “It’s really hard being away from home. I was just thinking about my mom, my sisters... Everything I left behind.”

Nate was out walking his dogs, he needed something normal to clear his head. He was constantly worrying about Jazz and all the new things he was adjusting to. But he knew no matter what, he’d do his best to look after her. He gave the girl a small smile, not wanting to pry. He’d briefly spoken to her a couple of weeks ago. “You can pet the dogs if you want, they usually make people feel better,” he said, nodding to the two small dogs on their leads.

Hearing the offer, Samara gave him a puzzled look before looking to the dogs. A quiet laugh fell from her lips before she put away her phone and the spellbook that had slid out. She got to her knees and reached out a hand to the dogs. “How did you know that dogs were the exact cheer up I need right now? Nate, right?”

Felix approached the young witch. Watching and listening to her words. He only approached when she placed the phone into her bag. “I am not sure a young witch should be alone right now. It appears Crescent Hill is a dangerous place.” 

“Promise, I can protect myself,” she said trying to sound strong even as she sniffled and had to rub at her eyes. “Plus, never alone. Even if it really, really feels that way right now,” Sam mumbled and closed her eyes.

Teary-eyed and defeated, Samara could have collapsed as she reached the park and sat down under one of the numerous trees. Her spell book fell out of her bag beside her, and she leaned back to rest her head. Sometimes, she forgot how utterly exhausting magic could be. Sam hadn’t had the courage to tell her mother or sisters about what happened in town because she knew she’d be called home, but at that moment, they were the only people she wanted to call to. “I miss you,” she whispered before placing a hand on the bag beside her.

“They’ve worked hard for that.” She smiled softly. “I don’t know… it frightens me. Who’s to say it wouldn’t be a repeat of Salem?”

“Trust me, I think humans have grown past Salem,” she stated calmly. “Plus, that was more misogyny and Puritan fear-mongering than anything else. Maybe I’m foolish, but I have hope things will be better. We’ll just have to work hard too.”

“A little dramatic perhaps.” She laughed, looking over one of the shelves. “But people are afraid we’ve done a lot to turn negative opinions of the vampires in this town… god knows what they’d do if the witches came out. Maybe life would be easier.”

“You’re right. Vampires are definitely way more accepted. Protections and everything,” she stated with a smile. “It’s really awesome to see. Because, you know, I think that when witches are more public, it means we’ll have these protections too. It will be nice.”

“You most certainly are a trusted one.” He nodded. “One of the only a few in town who knows about my ‘you know what’.” He lowered his voice a little just for dramatic effect, even though there was no one in the bar who could hear him. “C’mon…you’ve got to have a spell in your book somewhere for immortality.” He wiggled his fingers. “But if immortality doesn’t float your boat, I’d be there with you when you were dying if you needed someone.” He told her sincerely. He had a big heart, even though he didn’t always show it. It was the vampirism that made him a little pessimistic at times. But human Ash was so loving, and he kept a lot of that into his undead life. 

“Knows about your affinity for fancy jewelry?” She teased with a grin. As he asked about an immortality spell, her face fell briefly. It might be possible, but witches weren’t supposed to meddle with life and death. Spirit magic should only go so far to communicate with the dead. “Well, I thank you. Whenever I am on my death bed, I definitely want you at my side. I can just hope that deathbed is at least eighty years in the future. You might be tired of me by then.”

“I can imagine.” She smiled politely. Although she sold herbs, she’d never sold anything magical to a human. “Well… i’m glad business seems to be going okay.” 

“Thank you. It was a big surprise,” she admitted before adjusting one of the display items. “Honestly, I was scared coming here people might want to like... Burn down the shop or something.”

Instead of pouring her another drink, Ash decided to get her a glass of ice water. He’d serve her another, but he almost forgot how quickly humans and witches could get drunk. He snickered when she told him that she didn’t want to treat him like a bartender, then shrugged. “Honestly, Sam, sometimes I regret moving to this town too. It was easier to lay low in the bigger cities I’ve lived in. As for being homesick, I’m my own home at this point. That’s one of the many things that sucks about vampirism - living forever sounds nice, but the you love people die, but you don’t.” He didn’t mean to make this about him though. “I trust your magic though.” He motioned to his necklace she crafted for him then he forced a reassuring smile.

She thanked him quietly for the glass of water before sipping at it. Sam would take her time with it because she knew she shouldn’t get drunk when things were already feeling so unsafe. “Maybe, whenever you’re ready to move again, I’ll go with you. You can ditch me somewhere before I start growing old, I promise. No watching me... Die or anything,” she promised with a small smile. “Though, I’m not sure I count as a loved one. Just a trusted one.”

Ash was flashy and he most certainly required a flashy piece fo jewelry to compliment his style. For example, tonight he was in black high waisted, flared pants and a hot pink button down shirt that was unbuttoned down to his chest. Ash really did never leave the 70s. Ash leaned over on the bar, deciding he should maybe wait to pour her another shot. He didn’t want her on her ass. “Maybe use this as a time to show people that you witches aren’t as a bad as the people of this town make you out to be.” He spoke, adding in a suggestive wink.  

When the next drink didn’t come, she pouted in his direction. Though, she knew it was, of course, for her safety. Ash was right that she would get drunk way easier than he could. Sam would just have to wait it out. “I’ll try my best, but there are already some witches here that don’t like me and my type of magic. There’s no telling what humans may think if I get a prediction wrong or they see me using magic in a way they didn’t ask me to. Not to treat you like a bartender, but was moving here a mistake? Or am I just homesick?”

She nodded, smiling as the girl looked around the shop. “Oh… well it’s really quite the town. I would say your store fits in. Plenty of superstitious folk here.” She half smiled. “I just am not one of them.”

“Yeah, people love coming in here and buying things without clarifying with me how they work,” she confessed with a little laugh. “But most of the stuff on display is harmless. Magic lowered to like... A one. But I’ve had fun here!”
