phillip laughed when sam put the box back. “looks like i have more of an excuse to see him since i have this big box of treats.” he thought that sounded like a delightful idea. he would love for the two dogs to be friends. “we can have playdates! won’t that be adorable?”

Sam didn’t think he really needed an excuse, especially when he’d just told him he could always stop by. People seemed to ignore his words a lot it seemed. “Sounds good. You can also give some to your new dog,” he nodded. “It would be adorable.”

adaline flushed a bit more and cleared her throat. “yeah but i didn’t know if you’d be with a patient or not.” she relaxed a bit when sam took the dog and slipped her bag back over her shoulder. “yeah, no. he said he bought it from some woman selling puppies in her apartment. he doesn’t have his vaccinations yet.” she nodded slightly and followed sam back to an examination room. “he’s cute, though. i can’t even be mad at phillip for springing him on me. except maybe a little since he abandoned him within two minutes.”

“If I had someone else could have helped you,” he said with a shrug. Sam didn’t think it was really that big of a deal. It wasn’t like she came to his apartment to get care for his dog. He frowned at that and tilted his head to his side a bit. “What? Was it a good situation? Like her dog just had puppies? I don’t like the sound of that,” he said, walking back to the examination room and setting the puppy down. “I wouldn’t be mad. Concerned, maybe.”

“i’ll feed them to him when i stop by to visit! i don’t have the hands to give him one now. i don’t want to drop even more groceries. the girls will kill me. not really,” he laughed, “but it is my turn to supply to fridge and i’ve already lost the eggs which means no famous phillip omelettes for dinner.” he nodded a bit, juggling the bag to give marron one more pat. “i’ll bring him by myself. promise.”

Sam took the box and gave his pup a treat, but then put the box back in Phillip’s bag. “For the next time,” he said. “You can always see him whenever you want, even once you get your own dog. Maybe then the two can play.”

“sorry, i didn’t know what else to do. i wouldn’t normally drop in like this. not that i’d ever have any reason to. i just. phillip is incredibly irresponsible,” she rambled, adjusting her grip on the dog. “he just came home and yelled surprise and handed him to me and told me to do all the puppy things. i figured you’d know better than anyone else what that means. i’m assuming he needs shots and a check up and i am talking an awful lot, aren’t i?” she asked, flushing a bit. sam made her nervous, she couldn’t help it. he was just so kind. 

Sam laughed and shook his head. “It says walk-ins welcome at the door, doesn’t it?” he teased. He reached out to take the puppy, holding him and giving him a nice pet. “You are talking a good bit. Do you have any forms or paperwork from the adoption? I don’t want to give him a shot if he’s already had one recently. It’s not the worst thing, but it’s not the best either,” he said, giving the puppy another pet. “Let’s go in the back so he can get down.”

“everyone else can move out because marron wins at life. he’s a good boy. yes he is,” he grinned, fishing in his bag for the box of dog biscuits he’d purchased specifically for sam’s dog. “here i almost forgot! these are for him,” he insisted, pushing the box to sam. “i’ll bring him to you for that. promise.”

Sam thought Marron was the best, and he would actually love an entirely empty building, but he was pretty sure it didn’t work that way. “The whole box? For me? Wouldn’t you rather feed them to him yourself?” he asked curiously. He nodded. He made an effort to make sure people took good care of their animals. “Good. I can’t wait to see him.”

adaline waited nervously outside of sam’s vet clinic. in her arms was a small bundle of a puppy that phillip had simply decided to bring home and then he conveniently had to run to work and left the thing with her. it wasn’t like she didn’t like dogs. she loved them, in fact, but there were steps that had to be taken when you adopted an animal. he was friends with sam. he knew this. but he’d left it to her and she knew exactly why. she’d been on her way out to the park so she had her bag and she struggled to juggle the living, squirming pup and the bulky object in her other hand as she opened the door. “hi, is sam–doctor mccandrews available? can you tell him that adaline’s here and needs a bit of help.”

Sam was slightly irritated when someone came back to tell him a girl was waiting to talk with him. He didn’t need people just dropping in to chat when he was working. He was working. And his work was important. He didn’t have a boring desk job he wanted or needed to get away from. When he came out and saw Adaline with a puppy though, he realized that this wasn’t just someone coming to chat, and an actual animal was involved. “I see Phillip got the puppy then. When can I do for you and your dog?” he asked with a smile.

“dogs are the best. marron might be my favorite resident in the whole entire building,” he admitted. “who’s a good dog?” he asked. “is it you? it is you!” He straightened up after a moment and smiled at sam. “i really want one. the cat’s nice but… dogs, y’know? olive’s on board. maybe I’ll just go get a puppy and bring one home. no one can resist a puppy.”

“He is the best resident in the entire building,” Sam said honestly. He smiled as Phillip pet his dog. He liked when people liked his dog. It was like if he had a child. “I understand. Dogs are more engaged. You should get one if you can. Make sure you get it fixed and vaccinated.”

olive didn’t understand why everyone was making such a big deal about it, but she shrugged it off. she didn’t need to mention her underwear, obviously. “well, it’s not like everyone is so bothered by inappropriate or poorly timed comments, you know,” she said with a small smile. 

Sam found that particularly odd. He didn’t have the energy to continue this conversation, though. “As long as you know not to mention it anymore. I have to be going, now. My dog is waiting for me upstairs, as I only came out to decide if I wanted a coat for our walk.”

        samira resisted the urge to rub her temples. ‘ by banging on their doors until they open up, and then threatening to break their speakers, probably. ‘ it wasn’t a perfect plan, but at least it might get something done. or make her a lot of enemies, but that was just life. not everyone could be your friend. ‘ uh. yes? i like sleeping. a lot. and i work late, so…i figure i’ve earned it. ‘

Sam was quite sure that was a very good way to not get anything done. Next time they wouldn’t open their door, or they’d call the police because she threatened them, or they’d just play it louder. “I’ll stick to writing a letter,” he said. “I’m not saying you haven’t earned it. I just never get ten hours of sleep.”

A firm hand took Sams, shaking it politely with a nod.  “Sam, nice to meet you,” greeted the Australian.  “Majoring in media arts so like photography and videography and stuff and minoring in music production,” he expressed with a crooked smile.

Sam shook Daxton’s hand and smiled. “Nice to meet you, too,” he responded. Daxton seemed like a nice enough guy. “That sounds interesting. What do you do with a degree like that after you’ve graduated?”

that made sense. but at least she’d been able to see him. that had been the goal, honestly. “you’re right. i didn’t think it through,” she admitted. “maybe i’ll come by then. as long as you’re sure,” she hesitated. she didn’t want him to think she was weird. “you’re right. i don’t mind at all,” she teased back, though her words had a twinge of sadness. “nothing, just. needed a change of scenery. got a call from someone and it soured the apartment for a bit,” she admitted. “i’ll just sit out here by myself, i guess. thanks for stopping to talk to me,” she said, a bit unsure.

“Not all ideas can be well thought out,” he said, teasing. Sam nodded. He had no problem with her coming by. He wanted her to. She was one of his few friends. “I’m sure,” he said honestly. “That seems silly, letting someone else ruin your apartment for you. It’s your apartment,” he said shrugging his shoulder. “Okay. Have fun. I’ll see you around I’m sure.”

marina shrugged softly. “ no idea where my lighter is. maybe i forgot the key at home when i left this morning. or maybe at, well, work.. or something, i don’t know. ” she mumbled. then she offered half a smile, walking inside.

Sam seemed like that could be a possibility. If it were upstairs, she’d easily find it. If it was at work, she could find it there, too. “When is the last time you had the lighter? Did you lock your door on your way out?” he asked. He smiled a little in response. “Do you want to just sit here until your roommate gets here? Will they be here soon?”

jonas had been at the bar trying to sketch a couple of designs that had been in his head lately. since he opened up his new shop in downtown, portland it had been a small hit, it was more word of mouth than anything. it was different than when he was commuting to newberg, this location was much better, but busy was slow. he took another drink of his beer and flicked his eyes up to look at his surroundings before casting them back down again. he sighed heavily, the piece wasn’t working out like he wanted so he decided to give it some time and come back to it.

Sam typically tried to make an effort not to start conversations, unless he absolutely had to. However, the guy next to him looked like he was doing that he found rather interesting. He wasn’t entirely sure what he was working on, but his curiosity got the best of him and he found himself asking. “What is that?” he asked.

It’s really important to take time for yourself because if you don’t know what it is like to be a real person and spend time with a sense of normality, how can you play normal people in films?

Daxton noted the others uncaring tone, mindless conversation the other seemed to feel forced into having. But none-the-less being the boy he was he carried on with as much enthusiasm as he could muster.  “Daxton,” he introduced, smile intact.  “College, I’m studying abroad,” he explained, Australian accent thick on his tongue. 

Sam nodded, offering his hand out for Daxton to shake. “I’m Samuel. You can call me Sam though,” he said, smiling a little. “That sounds fun. What are you studying?” he asked, slightly curious.

“oh it’s quite alright. it was my fault. i was trying to figure out how to convince the girls to let me get a dog.” he set the bag of groceries down on the pavement, dropping down without a care about the eggs. “hiya, buddy,” he smiled at the dog, rubbing it softly. “i’m good. you sure you are? i’m real sorry about the eggs.”

Sam was pretty sure it was his own fault, but he didn’t feel like arguing over who took the blame. “It’s still alright. That would be fun. Dogs are great. As you can see, I like them a lot,” he smiled. Marron wagged happily as Phillip pet him. “I’m fine, Phillip. If I were bothered, you’d know.”
