Nano & SaS Update
(November 1st, 2015)
So, NaNoWriMo has started and it seems like everyone at my school is participating in some way or another. I’ve mentioned this before, but I’m not doing real Nano, I’m doing the “slacker” version. In which I mean I’ll be aiming to write 500 words a day, which will, by the end of the month, total to 15,000. This is a number I feel really good about- something that I think I can and will achieve and will really help me continue writing.
There are two reasons I’m not doing Nano proper. One is that I just don’t have the time to crank out that many words a day, especially with school. Winter break does start this month for me, but even with that I don’t think I’ll have the time needed. The other major reason is that I don’t like the constraining idea of having to both start and finish a novel in a month. The book I’m working on now, Sand and Storm, is going to be about 200,000 words (or at least that’s the goal) and I’ve already started it.
I realize now that I didn’t update this blog to explain what my new plan for SaS is. Originally I thought it was going to be a trilogy. But as I got to thinking more and more about it, I realized that I wanted to spend a lot more time in this world. And I had other stories I wanted to tell. Maybe these characters will be in these stories and maybe not, I’m still not one hundred percent sure on that factor. But rather than right spin-offs, like I considered, I realized that the original trilogy that was going to be SaS (made up of much shorter books of around 80,000 words each) could be pushed into one much longer, much more epic, novel. And as soon as I reached that conclusion, I realized how perfect that idea meshed with the story I wanted to tell. So, now, SaS is going to be a much longer novel and much more of a standalone than it once was.
I don’t know when I’ll get to the sequels. I do still like the idea of a trilogy, but I don’t know what that third book may be about. It could end up being a duet for all I know, and I’m not worried about it. I just like that I know that I can spend a lot more time in this world that I really enjoy. Most likely I will take some sort of break between books one and two to work on other projects.
My goals for finishing the novel are pretty straightforward. I want to hit 50,000 words on it this year. I’m at 10,000 words now. If I manage to write 15,000 this month I’ll be at 25,000 and then have all of December to write another 25,000. That does seem like a lot, but I have all of December off and I want to push myself to write. Then, for 2016, I’ll only have 150,000 words left. If I can write 15,000 words a month (about 500 words a day) I’ll be done in ten months, so at the end of October. So, hopefully, this time next year I will be completely done with SaS. Then I can spend next year’s Nano editing it hardcore. I think I can manage that.
As always, I’ll keep you all updated on how things are going.
Anyone actually doing Nano?

Rules for Writing a Kick-Ass Heroine
Personally, I don’t enjoy reading books with the heroine used as a doormat. You know the type. She gives into the hero because he’s hot, makes up excuses for his bad attitude, and essentially needs saving by the hero at every turn. I can already think of a few authors who’ve used this type of heroine. Hell, some of them are even bestselling authors. I’m not a fan. And if you love writing heroines who can save themselves, are determined in controlling their own life, and all around love women who are strong and independent, there are some rules.
Because your heroine still has to be likable for your reader to identify with her. Sure, she can blow things up, work as a spy or assassin, and have attitude, but there’s a line. And today I’m going to draw it out for you.

Quirky Illustrations of Untranslatable Words
London based illustrator and game artist, Marija Tiurina composed a series of stunning illustrations based on 14 charming and funny untranslatable words ranging from the German to the Japanese language. By depicting different scenarios literally and figuratively, which fit the words’ definition, Tiurina’s portrayal is dreamy and imaginative.

About to begin chapter 6
Sneaky characters
(October 16th, 2015)
So, I’ve had, on occasion, characters who sneak into my story. Most recently, a character in SaS who appeared on the first page and hasn’t decided to leave. That’s right- a character I originally introduced to serve as a prologue-isn character that introduces the world but has no bearing on the story- has been promoted to main character. And I honestly had no idea how that happened.
I was writing, and having a hard time managing Will’s POV for a scene, so I decided, “hey, let me sneak in this minor character (Dean) and he’ll describe what she looks like and how the world thinks about people like her and then we can get onto her story and he’ll appear once more just so there’s an ending for him” and that was working fine and I wrote him into my plan for the next couple of chapters planning to dismiss him quickly.
And then I was having trouble writing another Will scene. I just couldn’t make the words work from her perspective. So, after struggling for a few days, I said, “maybe Dean can make this work...” and low and behold he was given another section from his POV. And it worked really well.
So, I’ve given him a lot of thought, and he’ll be sticking around for some time. He’s a main character- officially. No more need to sneak in there, Dean, because I accept that you’ll be around for some time. And honestly? I’m super excited to write about you because the plan I have... well, let’s just say it’s gonna be really cool.
“Four Corners”- The Beginning Part 1
(October 6th, 2015)
So, I’m going to start posting part of a story that’s been swirling around in my head. I’m not sure exactly what it’s about, yet, but I know the characters, and I know it’s absolutely massive. And I know I’m not writing it in order. But I am fairly sure that this is where the story starts on the page, if not in chronology. I hope you enjoy it.
“And how did you two meet?” the spice trader asked them in her sweet voice.
Grimm shrugged, “It was so long ago, I barely remember.”
“We didn’t like each other completely at first,” Gavin told her as he reached into his purse for the money to pay her with.
“And then he ended up killing me,” Grimm said thoughtfully.
“But that didn’t work out too well, did it, brother?” Gavin chuckled darkly. “Still considering trying again, half the time.”
The spice trader blinked at them, clearly confused.
Grimm nodded, “But he won’t. We’ve been through too much at this point.”
Gavin handed her the money.
“I mean, I’ve also got a few kingdoms to run, and they’ll notice if I suddenly disappear,” Grimm continued.
“Cad won’t miss you a bit,” Gavin scoffed.
“No,” Grimm was thoughtful, “Cad won’t miss me. But that wouldn’t be the kingdom I’d abandon in death.”
“True, true. Guess he’s stuck with you, then.”
Grimm laughed, “Unfortunately.”
The poor spice trader was lost. She was stuck in the position of holding the money out in front of her. What a strange conversation to hear between two people, she thought. Can’t be real.
“Oh, it’s real,” Grimm assured her, as if reading her mind.
“Though you haven’t heard the half of it,” Gavin turned away. “Come on, Grimm, let’s get back to Audra before she brings hell upon the tavern we locked her up in.” Gavin left the little shop.
Grimm turned back to the trader, “I didn’t get your name, by the way.”
She blinked her thick, dark lashes a few more times, and then said, “Danny.” She leaned forward, “Is all that really true?” When Grimm nodded she asked, “Would you ever consider telling me the whole tale sometime?”
“It’s a bit long. I don’t think I could ever really get it all done correctly.”
“Then just some of it! You sound like a man of stories.”
Grimm smiled. “So many stories. You wouldn’t believe any of them. And I haven’t always been this person,” he gestured at himself. “One time I tamed a whole mountain range full of dragons. The dragons and the mountains. Of course, I had the help of Selene, but still, she couldn’t have done it without me. And another time I saved the world. Actually, I’ve done that a few times. The most notable was when I was still a denizen of the hells and had to do all the work from beyond the grave- mostly alone, might I add.”
“You’re right,” Danny smiled, “I don’t believe you. But I’d still love to hear your stories.”
Gavin barged back in, throwing the door wide. “Are you coming, Grimm?”
I’m Still Here
(October 6th, 2015)
Yes, I’m still writing. I’ve actually just finished chapter three of Sand and Storm and sent it to my friend. She agrees, it’s probably my weakest chapter but I do think it’s helped bridge some gaps I was having trouble with. Also added another layer of mythology to the world, which I really like.
I’m still considering Nano, except also not. I don’t want to start a new novel during this time frame, and I don’t want to write as much as it wants me to. So I’m thinking about setting a goal, during November, of 500 words a day and calling that my own little personal Nano. What do you think?
Music and Writing
(September 24th, 2015) Music is a really important part to my writing, but I can’t just listen to anything when I write. Sometimes I think I want to listen to something, but then it begins to feel forced. One artist that always helps the words come naturally is Taylor Swift. Don’t ask me why- because I don’t know. I just know that there’s something about her music that helps my writing.
I’m Still Writing
(September 21st, 2015)
It’s been a while since I’ve posted anything here, so I’m sorry about that. I have been writing, though. I have a friend who texts me each night to remind me to write and she’s also reading chapters of SaS as I finish them. I’m in the middle of chapter two now and I like where it’s going so far.
I’ve also had a tempting New Idea which I’ve had to push to the side because I must focus on SaS for now. I must!
