Night time. The city was completely dark, not the best hour to be wandering the streets. Not only because of the infected, no. They couldnāt trust humans any more than them. Nonetheless, Ben had never hated patrolling at night. Enjoyed the eery silence thatād wash over him was more than welcomed and, more than often, did he stumble upon confused souls wandering the streets searching for help or shelter. A constant battle of survival and while that was something a lot of people were all too familiar with, those who werenāt, were ever so in need of a guiding hand. Besides, Ben enjoyed using the fresh morning air for himself. Those days reminded him of his training, a bag full of survival necessities on his back, rifle hanging loosely off his shoulder, marching through the woods as heavy boots sunk into the mud. Well, almost. The branches cracked beneath his weight, his feet taking him well off the usual path that led through the forest and deeper into the unknown darkness. The sun was already on its way into the horizon again, so if he went there fast enough, heād make it there in time. A small spot in the middle of nowhere, some makeshift targets placed a couple of hundred yards away in a clearing. Really, nothing to get excited about but better than nothing anyway. Though, these days, he had noticed that something was off. Bullets of a sniper rifle he didnāt own stuck in the thick wood of the targets. An evident dent in his shooting position. Someone else had been using his hideout, quite successfully if he may add. Bullseye, several times. Marksmanship he had seen before. By someone he had always considered his brother. Had.
As he closed in on the clearing, a shot rung through the air. Distant, definitely not aimed at him. Ben slowly approached the familiar spot, but couldnāt make out anything but a dark figure in the shadows of the trees, laying flat on the ground aiming at one of the targets a couple hundred yards away. That little fucker had been using his spot for his own damn sake. Sure, it was an open field for everyone to find. That didnāt mean everyone would be allowed to shoot the shit he put up with his own fucking hands. As another shot vibrated through the air, Ben used the noise to step toward the man, grab him by the back of his jacket and hauled him to his feet. With his heel briefly kicked into the others inside of the knee, he threw the man to the ground. His arm was pressed against his throat, struggling to keep him down as finally, he got a good look of his face. The deep inhale of oxygen was stuck in his throat, heart skipping a beat as he tried to fathom what he was seeing. A face all too familiar. Not a day older. Ben froze in complete shock. No sign of life in his body or expression, except for the shaking of his fists that had grabbed the man by the jacket.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā āSam?ā
His voice was raspy, almost weak as he failed to believe what he was seeing. No, no that was impossible. Sam had died in Afghanistan on their mission. It had been a high risk mission, three people only. Sam, Ben and another good mate of theirs that they had known since SF training. But he never in his life had met anyone he clicked with as fast as Sam. Since day one they had been inseparable. Dragged each other through every painstaking task, reached out for each others hand when they needed to. Sam hadnāt been his best friend, heād been his brother. Not by blood, but by choice. Unfortunately, the mission had gone wrong. First, their third companion had stepped on a mine. Blown into pieces in front of their eyes. He still recalled the blood splattering on his face, the ringing in his ears. Ben had screamed, couldnāt recall what he said though. Everything that happened in the minutes to come were like a blurry memory, nothing more. They ran. Each step sending burning chills up their legs as they fought their way through the sand, away from blazing guns fired at them. He recalled screaming at Sam, trying to find him as the desert revealed its ugliest parts. A sandstorm separated them, that was the last thing he ever saw of him. No reports at the HQ. No body found. Yet, Ben was sure that Sam had died. Felt like part of him had been torn out of his flesh, leaving nothing but an emptiness for the loss of a brother.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Just aim and shoot. It was that simple for most of the people that carried a firearm with them nowadays, as if it was nothing but a toy. Point, shoot and end a life. The truth is, it is that easy but when youāve been doing it most of your life it will eventually start to have an affect on you. For Samuel it started slowly. He couldnāt concentrate unless he was holding a gun. He was restless and angry and eventually he couldnāt fall asleep. Not that he was looking forward to the nightmares that haunted his mind whenever he closed his eyes. He knew he should probably have nightmares about the flesh eating monsters but really the only thing that haunted him was that day but in his dream he actually found his body. It was always the same memory but with the different ending. He hadnāt found the body. No, he lost him.
Ā Ā Ā Ā āYou need to keep your head in the game, just point and shootā The sun had set long time ago and he knew perfectly well that he should be in bed. To try to get at least some kind of rest before heād have to go out again in the morning, but he couldnāt. Instead he was laying on the ground, doing the only thing that seemed to be able to clear his mind.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Slow your heart rate, breath out and... FireĀ
Ā Ā Ā Ā The shot echoed all around him as he pulled the trigger of his old SR-25 rifle. A rifle heās been keeping by his side since the moment he realized the world was changing into something horrible. It was the only thing heād kept from his former life and it was still the only thing that mattered to him. The bullet went straight through the target, that had been conveniently placed few hundreds meter away from him. Of course he knew the target must belong to someone else but he assumed it belonged to one of the morons that pretended to know everything about guns. So he didnāt feel particularly guilty about it.
Ā Ā Ā Ā He fired another shot and all of his worries and sickening thoughts vanished with the bullet as it sheered through the air and hit itās target. He was finally relaxed, so relaxed that he almost didnāt notice the rustling sound behind him, ALMOST. Of course his first guess was that one of the biters had been making the noise but he quickly dismissed the idea, because if a biter was here he would have been able to hear the groans and smell the rotten flesh miles away. No, it was another living person. Someone who might not have any interest in having a peaceful talk. Samuel slowly and carefully let his hand slide down his leg, where he kept his pistol but right before he was able to take a hold of it he was pulled up by two strong arms.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā This entire situation seemed all too familiar. Back then he used to have Ben as his spotter and heād take care of the threats around him. But here he was, by himself and heās probably going to have to fight the man that seemed to be more like a giant then anything else. Samuel was a good fighter, even if he had never been the best one in his team. He used to practice sometimes way longer then the other guys did, just to be as good as they were. Well that was long time ago, now he was good, really good even Ā but the stranger was strong and... Familiar? It seemed as if heād done this multiple times before with this man, even the way he threw him on the ground seemed familiar.Ā
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā He was pinned down on the ground, barely even ably to breath, yet as he was trying for the second time to reach for his gun, the only thing that was running through his mind was how theyāve had to have done this before, maybe even more then once.
Ā Ā Ā Ā Then he saw it. He saw his face and he recognized him right away.Ā āNo... No this canāt beā He wanted to fight him and shoot this STRANGER, because there was no way in hell that he was there with him. He died far away from this hell in a different kind of hell. This had to be his brain messing with him once again. The last time it had happened he was sure heād seen him walking among other people on the street of Scottsdale, before the outbreak. Heād been more then sure that it was him, he even ran after him screaming his name, because it had to be him
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā But it wasnāt because he was dead
Ā Ā Ā Samuel pushed him off, and as quickly as the weight of the other man was off his body, he sat up straight and pulled up his gun and aimed at his head.Ā āWhat the fuck is going on?? Who the hell are you and if youāre gonna say that youāre him then I swear to god I will put a bullet in your headā No he wouldnāt, he would never be able to do that. Not even if this was a stranger that looked exactly like his old friend.Ā
