Ian has been feeling off all morning.
Earlier, before work, he couldn't really complete his morning run. Five miles, and he's already winded. He couldn't stomach his breakfast either. To top it all off, he's been having a persistent headache that wouldn't go away since the night before.
Sue notices. Of course she does. But she hasn't said anything yet, so Ian pretends that he hasn't noticed that she's noticed.
Then at around noon, they get a call from the corrections facility nearby. A violent confrontation - one inmate severely wounded.
What else is new?
"Ready for this, kid?"
Ian white knuckles the steering wheel. "Always."
Once inside, he's on autopilot. The inmate is severely injured, but is otherwise conscious and somehow still spitting out insults to everyone within close proximity.
"...and especially fuck you!" the inmate wheezes as they restrain him for transport.
Ian shakes his head. "Really? We're here trying to save your ass, and that's all you got? Especially fuck you?"
Blue eyes snap to glare at him, that pretty mouth already parting - no doubt seconds away from spewing out some more creative insults.
But the moment their eyes meet, everything else freezes.
The chaos around them dies down. It's as if someone's hit the pause button, leaving only Ian and this inmate to move freely.
Ian's heart skips a beat...
Because he knows this man.
Hasn't seen him before in his life, but-
He knows this man...
...And Ian has never felt more alive than he does right now.
