art&science, they said. Can see now why my art teacher in elementary tried to convey me gently that i have no drawing talent
joining research as an undergrad
first tumbler post, so nervous, sorry y'all
Joining research as a 1st-year undergrad must be the most hideous thing to exist, because it's basically this: "Hi, I have no clue about your whole research theme just because I didn't have time to take the right classes yet, but please would you be so kind as to spend your and your colleagues' time teaching me the very basics of your field," but in a very official email etiquette. And you're lucky if they're actually willing to explain the topic to you.
But the worst part is when your supervisor is also an undergrad (please, make this damn well illegal): you both have a pretty vague idea of how things work, yet one of you can still chew the other out over just about anything, and this shady outfit literally happened to be the very first research group to ever exist in my life. So when it happened that I was too much for them (too chic, sorry), I thought, like: "C'mon, I'll leave this shit-pit the very next time they call me a dumbass," which happened, most likely, within an hour. And a month later, I got my semester project score cut over what they called "No impact in teamwork, no impact at all," which is a complete falsehood. Or not.
Even though I worked like a dog and did so much extra to make mine and my fellow 1st-year undergrads' pitiful research lives a bit easier, stayed past 10 or 11 p.m. a couple of times, and never laughed at some shady-fishy jokes, it somehow turned into this "insufficient contribution" thing right after I texted that I was leaving.
At second sight, as a certified gossip girl, I can tell that this slightly-more-than-a-semester before I left them wasn't actually that demonic and helped me so much in achieving my very real off-university internship and fulfilling my need for academia gossip. Luckily, I also discovered my talent for writing these mawkish letters, so in the end I found a research group that I really love, and after my internship I'm about to put together another little message for the computational chemistry department (and I'm not even a blind cat when it comes to this shady calculations stuff anymore, imagine that).
took some photos with a friend at my very loved, very adored microbiology lab (i haven't been there in a month and i'm ashamed tho)
