Byler fic inspired by Enhypen's "Brought the Heat Back"
Mike Wheeler was having a good day. Was the world in the middle of an apocalypse? yes. Were his parents speaking to each other? No. Did he and El break up three weeks ago because they realized they werenāt right for each other? Also yes. But Mike wasnāt going to let that ruin his day, not when he woke up with Willās nose pressed into his shoulder, and his arm thrown over his stomach.Ā
When the Byers moved back to Hawkins after Spring Break, they had nowhere to go, and Karen Wheeler immediately offered up their house. Mike was on board with this immediately, up until his mother suggested he and Will share a room.
Him and Will, in the same room, in the same bed, sharing Mikeās clothes because Will couldnāt grab any after the shoot out in his California home.
He had always been allergic to his feelings, choosing to bottle things up until they would inevitably explode. But even those were feelings he could pinpoint. Iām angry, Iām sad, Iām scared.Ā
But what he felt for Will was different, he had no clue what it was and couldnāt even begin to explain it. All he knew is when he looked over at Will this morning, he didnāt move his arm away, instead pushed his shoulder further into Will and contemplated the warm feeling in his chest when Will nuzzled further into him, still asleep.
So yes, he is having a pretty okay day. At least he was until he came to a halt in the middle of a Hawkins High school hallway at the end of the day, his eyebrows setting themselves into a frown and his eyes narrowing slightly.Ā
Because why the fuck is Will laughing at something that Ethan Brown is saying?Ā
Mike moves over to the side as people push past him, his eyes never leaving Will who is standing by his locker, head thrown back and his hand covering his mouth while holding a note book in the other. Ethan is leaning on the locker next to Willās, his arms crossed and looking at Will with a smile on his face.
Will met Ethan in art class at the beginning of the semester, and while he had mentioned him to Mike a couple of times, he failed to mention how attractive Ethan was, and funny apparently.
Does Will think heās attractive? And whatās so fucking funny? What does Ethan Brown know about making Will laugh?
A bubble of something sour forms in the pit of Mikeās stomach, he doesnāt know what it is or why this feeling causes this reaction but before he knows it, heās walking over to Will and Ethan. Shoulders set into a hard line and his fingers running through his dark hair.
Ethan spots him first, his laugh settling down and his posture losing the relaxed feeling he just had. Will notices the change in Ethan and follows his line of sight. Mike comes up right next to Will, practically caging him between his locker and Mike.
āHey Mike-ā Will says, his sentence getting cut off as Mike sets his attention on Ethan, completely ignoring Will.
āHey. Iām Mike, Willās best friend.ā He says in what he thinks is a casual tone but sounds more like an angry kid who got his crayons stolen. His hands going into his pockets as Ethan sticks a hand out to shake.
āUm- hi. Iām Ethan, Iām in Willās art class.ā Ethan answers in an awkward tone, retracting his hand, clearly not giving in to whatever Mike is trying to provoke out of him.
āYeah I know, Will told me.ā Mike says, still looking at Ethan.
āMikeā¦ā Will whispers quickly, giving him an embarrassed but pointed look.
Mike finally looks at Will and raises his eyebrows at him, almost like a challenge. The two stare at each other for a few seconds before Ethan clears his throat.Ā
āCoolā¦ā Ethan says sarcastically, turning back to Will
āAnyways Will, Iāll see you in class next week.ā he says with a sly smile, beginning to walk away.
Will finally breaks eye contact with Mike, looking away with a small huff and waving to Ethan as he leaves.
āYou didnāt have to be rude Mike.ā Will says turning back to grab his stuff from his locker, his back facing towards Mike.
āI wasnāt, I was just introducing myself-āĀ
āMike. You didnāt even shake his hand-ā
āMy hands are cold and-ā
āOh your hands are cold are they-ā
āWhat were you guys laughing about?ā Mike asks innocently, although his demeanor would suggest he was asking manically. Will pauses briefly, grinning slightly to himself and mulling over Mikeās questions and tone.
Is heā¦? No heās notā¦ right?
āJust an inside joke from art class. Ethan is really funny.ā Will shrugs, zipping up his backpack.
Mike hums in acknowledgment, nodding his head up and down slowly, his hand coming up and tracing his jaw and chin in contemplation.
āFunnyā¦ā Will hears Mike murmur to himself and his grin deepens. Itās not often Will gets to push Mikeās buttons like this, but with an opportunity like this presenting itself, who is Will to give that up?
āWhatever,ā Will dismisses.
āDustin and Lucas are waiting for us, Steve said heād give us a ride homeā Will says, slamming his locker shut and walking ahead of Mike.
Mike should be more worried that Will is clearly annoyed with him now, but canāt help the fuzzy feeling he got at hearing Will say āhome.ā Because he means Mikeās house. Mikeās Room. and possibly, Mike.
