There was something sobering about this moment. The wine that had been disguised as punch had only caused the smallest buzz. “The wine is weaker here.” She thought as she took her last sip then allowed herself to be pulled into the mob of sweaty bodies that was twirling and stepping in unison. From the moment she walked in, she was being dragged every which way to say hello to everyone and have an entirely too over the top reaction to everyone’s outfit. Bailey had walked in with her, but now she couldn’t find him. She promised to force him into one dance at the end, but until then she was carefree.
When the feeling of her drunk peers breath became too much for her, she shoved her way out of the group, a smile ingrained on her face. This was where she thrived, in the elegant chaos of a public setting. Grabbing the sides of her dress, she made her way to her table to catch her breath and scan the crowd for her next dance partner, she perked up when her eyes fell upon Harlem and Bailey. The two people she genuinely wanted to spend this night with were together.
Very together. Extremely together. Like tongues tied together.
An unfamiliar tingle spread throughout her body. Something about seeing them together, seeing them kiss, and not knowing anything about their relationship made her feeling a little nauseous. If they were kissing anyone else it would’ve been fine. Just not each other. Sandy needed to get out of here, just for a second. Soon her legs were bringing her outside, the feeling of fresh air on her body was soothing.
Her heart had finally stopped racing when she heard his voice, which sent it racing again. “Oh. Hi. Uh, nothing. Just needed air. Ew, what is that?” Without a second of hesitation she swatted the cigarette out of his hand. “Where’s Harlem? Not that like, I expect you to know but I mean you could. I just-” The goddess stopped to take a breath. “How’s the..ball?”
He stared at the discarded cigarette on the floor, contemplating on pulling another one out. But, he decided against it, knowing she was likely to just swat it out again. “What the fuck was that for? I needed that.” His body felt completely tense, between the events unfolding tonight and the girl sitting in front of him. He needed that cigarette to relax, he just needed it.
“Harlem?” To be honest, he had also been looking for her, just to make sure she was okay and everything wasn’t damned to hell with their sort of friendship. “What are you talking about?” If his head hadn’t been buzzing between the noise and stupid feelings, he would have maybe thought there was a hint of jealousy in her voice. But if he had, he probably wouldn’t have believed it. What did she have to be jealous over? She’s a literal goddess who can have any boy she desires in the school.
“The ball is… hectic?” His face scrunched up at the end of his sentence. “I’m glad I was never invited to these damn things back home. Fucking horrible.” There was not one aspect Bailey enjoyed about balls, except maybe the way Sandrine looked in her dress. He couldn’t deny that he had secretly checked her out more than once tonight, as much as he didn’t want himself to.
“Smoking is bad for you? You need to quit smoking and take care of yourself. I can show you the pictures of smoker lungs again.” She threatened, coming back to herself to scold him. “You were doing so well, what happened?”
“Yes, Harlem Fitzherbert. I, um, didn’t know you two knew each other. Or were,” She bit her lip, uncertain of how to say this without making herself seem even crazier. “Seeing each other.” The goddess paused, reflecting on how ridiculous she was being. This was Barley. If he wanted to be with a girl then fine, it shouldn’t matter to Sandy what he does in his romantic time but this was Harlem. The same Harlem who had confided her entire world into the goddess and would be one of her best friends for the rest of their lives, and she knew the way Bailey jumped from girl to girl to get the closest thing to a feeling. Maybe that’s why Sandy was so uncomfortable with this whole situation, she couldn’t take seeing one best friend break another best friend’s heart, but even this realization didn’t satisfy the unnatural frustration that lurked in her mind.
Sandrine had only picked up on the last bit of his sentence. She was thinking at a mile a minute just trying to put this whole thing together. “They’re not that bad. This museum is beautiful, and I love an excuse to put a gown on. The wine sucks though. The ones in Olympus were so much fun.”
[text]:You hate me, do you?
[text]: I don’t hate you, but do not ever touch my Mousakka ever again or I may just have to kill you a little bit.
[text]:What are we?

[text]:I need you right now.

[text]:I’ll never be good enough for you.
[text]: you’re being dramatic, all I said was you have bad taste in movies.[text]: you’re moooore than enough, stinky!

Bailey had been looking everywhere for Sandrine, having lost her when she excused herself earlier. He thought maybe he had missed her, between the Harlem situation and all the people, but he couldn’t be sure. Speaking of Harlem, he couldn’t seem to find her anywhere, but his priority was Sandrine.
They had agreed to go tonight as friends, the word making Bailey’s heart ache on the inside. He knew he shouldn’t be complaining, considering she even decided to go with him at all, but these stupid feelings made everything difficult. He hated how it made him feel on the inside, like he was dying even more than he usually felt. He thought about her all the time, even managing to write not only one, but three songs about the whole situation. It was getting ridiculous, but he knew he could never say anything. He couldn’t ruin things.
After taking another sweep of the museum, he decided to head outside to take a much-needed smoke. He had been trying to stop the habit due to the damn girl, but he was desperate at the moment. Things were becoming too much. Just as he finished taking his first drag, he spotted a familiar gown, walking over to her. “Sardine.. I’ve been looking for you everywhere. What happened?”
